DIRECTOR’S FOREWORD

I am delighted to share with you our spring and summer exhibitions and programs for 2016. The diversity in the art and experiences on offer at the NGV reflects our continued ambition to build upon a rich and lively program that speaks to a broad audience.

Our spring program will launch with a significant exhibition of one of Australia’s most prominent living artists, John Olsen: The you beaut country, which is the most comprehensive survey of Olsen’s work to date. We are delighted to be working with John Olsen on this exhibition, which will trace the artist’s vision from his first solo exhibition in 1955 to his recent work, highlighting his versatility across a variety of media.

We are delighted to celebrate the life’s work of Sally Gabori in a retrospective survey of the Kaiadilt artist from Bentinck Island in the Queensland’s Gulf of Carpentaria. Featuring over 30 works, this Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art exhibition will present the stylistic trajectory and the cultural legacy of Gabori, from her earliest works on small-scale canvases to her monumental paintings, juxtaposing daring colours and celebrating the splendour of paint and colour.

We will continue our strong focus on contemporary design and architecture, with our annual architecture commission this year evolving into a competition to design an outdoor pavilion for our Grollo Equiset Garden. Judged by an esteemed panel of leading Australian architects and designers, Melbourne-based M@ STUDIO Architects won this year’s competition with their design, which emulates a typical suburban carwash. The ingenuity of the design and playfulness of the concept will translate to an evocative structure.

Bamboo: Tradition in contemporary form will explore the sensual and sculptural power of contemporary Japanese bamboo art. Bamboo weaving is one of the oldest technical skills to have developed in Japan and throughout history has been used in a myriad of ways, from religious rituals to the construction of buildings. The exhibition will focus on 27 bamboo works that have been acquired thanks to the support of Mr S. Baillieu Myer AC and Mrs Sarah Myer..

Italian Jewels: Bulgari Style will allow audiences to see the grandeur and brilliance of exquisite jewellery from this prestigious Italian design house. The exhibition will showcase the longstanding relationship between Bulgari, Rome and Hollywood cinema, featuring jewels from the collections of Elizabeth Taylor and Grace Kelly amongst others.

An installation by acclaimed Taiwanese-American artist Lee Mingwei will be a unique participatory experience for visitors to

NGV International. The poignant work The Moving Garden invites visitors to take a flower from the installation, then present the flower to someone they don’t know who they feel would benefit from the act of generosity.

The NGV is developing the unique exhibition Viktor&Rolf: Fashion Artists in collaboration with internationally renowned fashion label Viktor&Rolf – comprising Amsterdam-based fashion duo Viktor Horsting and Rolf Snoeren. Known for their spectacular and avant-garde creations, Horsting and Snoeren are self-confessed outsiders of the fashion world, blurring the lines between art and fashion. This exhibition will showcase more than 35 of their most iconic works in an immersive environment. Also at NGV International, the popular free Children’s Gallery will feature Viktor&Rolf for Kids, an interactive and hands-on activity-based exhibition, focussing on the designers’ expertise in scent design.

Our summer contemporary blockbuster for 2016, David Hockney, is a world-first exhibition developed in collaboration with the artist and his studio focussing on the past decade of Hockney’s career. The exhibition will feature more than 700 works, some new and most never-before-seen in Australia. Arguably Britain’s greatest living painter, David Hockney, 78, today works prolifically painting and also experimenting and mastering new technologies, producing thousands of drawings and works created on iPhone, iPad and video. In addition to a gallery dedicated to lush and vibrant landscapes created using these new technologies, there will be a dedicated 35-metre long gallery lined with more than 80 recently painted acrylic portrait paintings of the artist’s family, friends and notable subjects including John Baldessari and Barry Humphries. This exhibition provides a rare chance to view the most current practice of one of the most discussed artists of our time.

Accompanying all our exhibitions will be a diverse range of public programs and special one-off events. We look forward to presenting more In Conversation and keynote events with some of the world’s leading artists and design practitioners, as well as our annual NGV Kids Festival and accompanying regional Kids on Tour program.

Our Spring/Summer 2016 program is testament to our desire to create vibrant and rich spaces where the community can engage with art in a contemporary context. We recognise that the NGV plays a critical role in providing a place where people can share ideas, create debate and feel connected to art and each other. We look forward to welcoming you all to the NGV for this exciting season.

MAKING THE AUSTRALIAN QUILT: 1800 – 195022 July 2016 – 6 November 2016The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia TICKETED

Making the Australian Quilt: 1800–1950 is the first major exhibition of its kind to bring together the rich works that constitute Australia’s quilt heritage. Exclusive to Melbourne, the exhibition includes more than eighty works from around the country. Key works such as The Rajah Quilt and examples by renowned makers Mary Jane Hannaford, Marianne Gibson and Amelia Brown are shown alongside a number of recently discovered pieces not exhibited before. The exhibition features quilts, coverlets, garments and quilted, patched and pieced works made in Australia or with a significant Australian provenance. The exhibition also features key 19th century English quilts that were brought or sent to Australia, informing and influencing the early quilting practices of local makers.

ARTIST’S HAND: COLLECTORS’ EYE THE ANGEL GIFT4 June 2016 – November 2016The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia FREEENTRY

Since 2002, the Honourable David Angel QC and Anita Angel have gifted to the NGV contemporary Aboriginal art which focuses on the Western Desert, the Kimberley and the Tiwi Islands, representing the work of many of its senior male and female artists from 1990 to now. This period has witnessed immense change in Indigenous art practice, notably the emergence of Indigenous women as artists of consequence and invention, as seen in the work of Wakartu Cory Surprise, Jean Baptiste Apuatimi and Naata Nungurrayi. Also notable has been the forging of pared down forms of expression that have enabled Pintupi male artists, such as Mick Namarari Tjapaltjarri and Turkey Tolson Tjupurrula to distil the specificity of place. The hand and vision of individual masters is a mark of this exhibition that attests to the power and spiritual aura of Indigenous art and the artists’ affinity with Country.

BAMBOO: TRADITION IN CONTEMPORARY FORM7 July 2016 – October 2016NGV International FREEENTRY

Bamboo groves are a quintessential part of the Japanese landscape, and bamboo weaving is one of the oldest technical skills to have developed in Japan. The exhibition Bamboo: Tradition in contemporary form will explore the evocative, sensual and sculptural power of contemporary Japanese bamboo art through 22 contemporary and five traditional bamboo works, made possible thanks to the support of Mr S. Baillieu Myer AC and Mrs Sarah Myer. These visually dramatic sculptural forms will be complemented by a selection of historical paintings, lacquer ware, musical instruments, woodblock prints and hand-printed books from the NGV Collection and private collection loans.

BRUCE ARMSTRONG: AN ANTHOLOGY OF STRANGE CREATURES26 August 2016 – 29 January 2017The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia FREEENTRY

One of Australia’s most acclaimed sculptors, Melbourne-based Bruce Armstrong is best known for his monumental totemic figures which can be seen in public spaces around the country. Often hewn from massive pieces of red gum, his birds, beasts and figures have a raw energy which asserts a commanding presence and engages directly with the viewer.

Bruce Armstrong: An Anthology of Strange Creatures is a major survey of the artist’s work from the 1980s through to the present. It highlights his ongoing interest in mythological figures and his enduring preoccupation with the relationship between sculpture and architectural design. Drawing from both public and private collections, the exhibition brings together over thirty of the artist’s most memorable sculptures.

GLENN MURCUTT: ARCHITECTURE OF FAITH6 August 2016 – 19 February 2017The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia FREEENTRY

Architecture of Faith is a unique exhibition providing an in-depth ex-ploration of the new Australian Islamic Centre at Hobsons Bay, Mel-bourne, designed by renowned Australian architect Glenn Murcutt.

Murcutt and Melbourne practice Elevli Plus worked with the Newport Islamic Council for nearly a decade on the creation of a contemporary Australian mosque and Islamic centre. Importantly, this significant building has been funded and built by members of the local community. The Australian Islamic Centre sets out to define a new architectural language for contemporary Australian Islam, challenging our assumptions of historical architectural typologies and aesthetics. At the same time as respecting the fundamental principles and requirements of Islamic architecture, Murcutt has pushed beyond the semiotic language of the traditional mosque, reimagining its geometry, colours, materiality and spatial organisa-tion to create an accessible contemporary place of worship, learning and community.

The new Australian Islamic Centre represents a progressive vision for architecture as a tool for cultural expression and enabler of inter-cultural dialogue in a tolerant multicultural society.

JOHN OLSEN: THE YOU BEAUT COUNTRY16 September 2016 – 12 February 2017The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia TICKETED

Celebrating one of Australia’s most prominent living artists, John Olsen: The you beaut country will be the most comprehensive survey of his work to date, encompassing seven decades of energised creation.

The exhibition traces the development of Olsen’s singular landscape vision – from his formative years as a student of abstraction and figuration in Sydney and Europe in the 1950s, to the major works of his artistic maturity in the 1960s and 70s, and his spectacular re-imaginings of the Australian landscape in decades since. The exhibition will also highlight Olsen’s versatility across media, featuring, along with paintings and works on paper, commissioned ceiling paintings, tapestries and ceramics, drawn from public and private collections throughout Australia. John Olsen: The you beaut country will be on display at the National Gallery of Victoria from 16 September 2016 before opening at the Art Gallery of New South Wales on 10 March 2017.

ITALIAN JEWELS: BULGARI STYLESeptember 2016 – January 2017 NGV International

FREEENTRY

The name Bulgari is synonymous with 1960s Italian glamour. Richard Burton famously quipped that in the nine months Elizabeth Taylor spent in Rome filming Cleopatra, she learned just one word of Italian — ‘Bulgari’.

Italian Jewels: Bulgari Style brings together Bulgari’s visionary creativity and the maison’s leading women in a spectacular display of film, photography and glittering jewels.

Showcasing the longstanding relationship between Bulgari, Rome and Hollywood cinema, the exhibition features exquisite jewels from the personal collections of Elizabeth Taylor and Gina Lollobrigida and favoured by prestigious patrons such as Anita Ekberg and Grace Kelly. Spectacular jewels worn on the red carpet by leading Hollywood starlets, such as Kiera Knightley, will feature from the Bulgari Heritage Collection.

Organised by the National Gallery of Victoria in collaboration with Bulgari Heritage.

PROGRAM INSIGHTS Public programs for Italian Jewels: Bulgari Style will include talks and conversations by curators, designers, academics and other experts related to jewellery, style and design, delving into the particular jewels on display.

LEE MINGWEI: THE MOVING GARDEN October 2016 – January 2017 NGV International FREEENTRY

Taiwanese-American artist Lee Mingwei is internationally recognised as one of the leading creators of art which invites audience participation. In Summer 2016/17 the NGV will present his acclaimed piece The Moving Garden 2009-present, an artwork that will create new, unexpected encounters in the city.

Lee’s artwork is highly participatory, and invites audiences into one-on-one interactions, such as bringing in an item to be mended by the artist in The Mending Project as well as more open-ended works such as The Moving Garden.

Lee says of the work:

‘In this project I present a space with beautiful, fresh flowers. Museum guests are invited to take one of these flowers with them when they leave the museum, if they will agree to do two things: first, to make a detour from their intended route when leaving the museum for their next destination; second, along this detour, to give the flower to a stranger who they feel would benefit from this unexpected act of generosity.’

Lee received an MFA from Yale University in 1997, and has recently held solo exhibitions at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Taipei Fine Arts Museum, and Mori Art Museum.

A playful reinvention of the suburban car wash is the concept behind the 2016 NGV Architecture Commission which will be built in the NGV’s Grollo Equiset Garden this spring. Designed by Melbourne-based M@ STUDIO Architects, the ephemeral structure is titled Haven’t you always wanted to run through all that foam at the car lovers?

With dimensions taken directly from an existing car wash in Blackburn, the design transplants an object of everyday use and familiarity into the unfamiliar surroundings of an art gallery. In place of cement and fluorescent lighting, the structure will have a lightweight steel body with walls made of layered cricket netting and a translucent polycarbonate roof.

The evocative structure will include five ‘bays’ with lanes of bright pink astro turf complete with rubberised humps and road markings. Topped by a glittering ‘car wash’ sign and illuminated at night, the spaces will be used for events, talks, live music performances and more over spring and summer as well as providing a place for Melburnians to gather, play and daydream. The whimsical structure will also include two bays replete with hanging curtains of red plastic, while another will diffuse mist recreating the experience of being at the car wash.

The NGV Architecture Commission is an annual open competition which asks architects to consider innovative ways to activate one of Melbourne’s great civic spaces, the Grollo Equiset Garden. Competitors are encouraged to offer a unique response to the site, explore new propositions about architecture and design, and demonstrate innovation in material use, fabrication, sustainability and recyclability.

Led by the NGV’s Department of Contemporary Design and Architecture, the inaugural Architecture Commission was presented for the first time in 2015 by John Wardle Architects, who designed an exuberant pavilion of steel, timber and hand-formed textile elements.

SALLY GABORILAND OF ALL23 September 2016 – 29 January 2017 The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia FREEENTRY

This retrospective survey and celebration of the life and work of Mirdidingkingathi Juwarnda Sally Gabori c.1924–2015 features over thirty works on loan from Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art, Brisbane. Gabori was a contemporary artist of considerable sophistication and dare and a distinguished senior Kaiadilt woman artist from Bentinck Island in the Queensland’s Gulf of Carpentaria. Her indefatigable zeal to communicate her stories, knowledge, and experiences accumulated over an incredible life — spanning over 90 years — won her great admiration and has left an astonishing cultural legacy.

The exhibition Mirdidingkingathi Juwarnda Sally Gabori Dulka Warngiid – Land of All traces the stylistic trajectory of Gabori’s oeuvre, encompassing her earliest small-scale canvases of 2005, iconic large-scale collaborative works with other Kaiadilt women, her singular monumental canvases of daring colour juxtapositions, through to her almost monochromatic paintings and works on bark produced at the end of her career.

Gabori created a body of work which expressed sensations of life and cultural memory in diaspora and differed from other known forms of Aboriginal painting which focused on story-telling. Most of Gabori’s works represent places on Bentinck Island of deep personal significance to the artist: her husband’s place, Dibirdibi Country, her father’s place, Thundi, her own Country, Mirdidingki, and the first outstation, Nyinyilki.

Gabori lived on Bentinck Island in accordance with custom, developing knowledge of Kaiadilt cartography and cosmology, until the entire population was removed to Mornington Island mission by European settlers in 1948.

This exhibition Mirdidingkingathi Juwarnda Sally Gabori Dulka Warngiid – Land of All is a Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art Touring Exhibition.

PROGRAM INSIGHTS The rich and colourful works of Mirdidingkingathi Juwarnda Sally Gabori will provide inspiration for a range of programs including talks from artists, curators and other commentators providing insights into Gabori’s life and work.

VIKTOR&ROLF: FASHION ARTISTS 21 October 2016 – 26 February 2017 NGV International

The spectacular and avant-garde creations of international luxury fashion house, Viktor&Rolf, will be showcased in a world-first exhibition developed in collaboration with the National Gallery of Victoria. Viktor&Rolf: Fashion Artists, opening October 2016 at the NGV, is set to explore Viktor&Rolf’s notion of wearable art.

As self-confessed outsiders of the fashion world, since forming their artistic partnership in 1992, fashion artists Viktor Horsting and Rolf Snoeren have gained critical acclaim for their rebellious approach to design, technical virtuosity, and deep knowledge of fashion history. Throughout their illustrious twenty-year career, Viktor&Rolf have carved a contradictory identity that pushes the boundaries between art and fashion, often contrasting romance and violence, exuberance and control, classicism and rebellion.

The duo have become renowned for their experimental runway shows, including their 1999 ‘Russian Doll’ runway show in which model Maggie Rizer was progressively dressed by the designers in nine different layers and 2003’s ‘One Woman Show’ fashion collection inspired by actress and muse Tilda Swinton, in which the actress herself appeared amidst a runway of models made up in her likeness.

The exhibition will feature some of the most show-stopping and innovative works by the Dutch design duo. These will include over 35 haute couture pieces from the designers’ collections, presented alongside earlier designs from the Viktor&Rolf archive and international museum collections. Also on display will be a selection of their work-in-progress ‘Dolls’: replicas of antique dolls dressed in the designers’ most iconic looks.

The exhibition has been developed in close collaboration with Viktor&Rolf and international guest curator Thierry-Maxime Loriot, curator of the NGV’s blockbuster exhibition The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier.

PROGRAM INSIGHTS The NGV will present a diverse range of programs for Viktor&Rolf: Fashion Artists, including an opening weekend keynote conversation with the designers Viktor Horsting and Rolf Snoeren. Other program highlights will include a range of talks and conversations examining the themes of the exhibition and Viktor&Rolf works. The Gallery’s popular Friday Nights at NGV program will return to provide social, informal learning and creative experiences for visitors after-hours to Viktor&Rolf over summer.

DAVID HOCKNEY 11 November 2016 – 13 March 2017 NGV International TICKETED

The NGV will present a major solo exhibition of one of the most influential artists of the past century, David Hockney, opening 11 November 2016 at NGV International. The exhibition, curated by the NGV in collaboration with David Hockney and his studio, will feature more than 700 works from the past decade of the artist’s career – some new and many never-before-seen in Australia - including paintings, digital drawings, photography and video works. Exhibition highlights include more than 600 extraordinary and sometimes animated iPad digital drawings of still life compositions, self-portraits and large-scale landscapes including scenes of Yosemite National Park. Another highlight is The Four Seasons, Woldgate Woods, a breath-taking and immersive video work showcasing the changing landscape of Hockney’s native Yorkshire, each season comprised of nine high-definition screens. A dedicated 35-metre long gallery lined with more than 80 recently painted acrylic portrait paintings of the artist’s family, friends and notable subjects including artists John Baldessari and Barry Humphries will also be a major highlight. Arguably Britain’s greatest living contemporary artist, David Hockney, 78, today works prolifically as a painter, also experimenting and mastering new technologies, producing thousands of drawings and works created on iPhone, iPad and in video. The artist will create a number of new works for the exhibition, which will be exhibited for the first time at the NGV. Other highlights of the exhibition include Bigger Trees Near Warter, Hockney’s largest painting comprised of fifty oil on canvas panels, and the centrepiece of Hockney’s hugely popular exhibition Bigger Picture at the Royal Academy, London and now owned by the Tate. Transforming the gallery, the three remaining walls of this space will display 1:1 digital versions of the same work and it will be the first time that this major work has been exhibited in Australia. Hockney’s continued investigation into multi-point perspective will be represented by The Jugglers, an 18-screen, twenty-two minute video that depicts the artist in a room of jugglers, injecting Hockney’s signature playfulness into the exhibition. Again utilising technology to reveal a study in perspective, Hockney’s Seven Yorkshire Landscapes is a 12 minute multi-viewpoint video displayed on 18 tiled, 55-inch monitors which monumentally showcases the extraordinary landscape. Organised by the National Gallery of Victoria in collaboration with Gregory Evans of David Hockney Inc. PROGRAM INSIGHTS
