My Dear Fellow Lions of Team CW, I hope I find you well. So

we are still living in the new normal, whatever that is but

one thing that never changes is the pride I have for being

part of the World’s largest service organisation.

My pride couldn’t have been greater than at the fantastic

handover we had on the 1st July. Using the power of

technology, I did my Oath at dinner time where I promised

to do my best for Lions and later on I knew we had some

good entertainment to come because I knew Lion Paul had

been working so hard to make the evening’s handover

work.

But how many would we get to see the handover? I came

onto Zoom and all I saw was a wall of faces looking back at

me and when our District SAA opened the procedures, we

had a full house. Before I go any further if you failed to get

into the Zoom meeting, I apologise, we had 14 different

countries present and we were even blessed with attend-

ance by 3rd International President, Lion Patti Hill. The

videos shared during the evening are available to view on

our You Tube channel click on this link : www.youtube.com/

channel/UCU1heQqG6CE4m8P8mFc0gIQ

I think the evening went very well and I presented Lion Paul

Murphy with his DG certificate of appreciation. I hope he

finds a nice new home for it.

As we have completed the first month of this Lions year,

what has happened? Well you didn’t stop doing the great

Lions work you do; long may this continue. Secondly the

District Officers of 20/21, got to work. Some of this work

you might not see because they are behind the scenes

team, but I still thank them. One of the things you might

have noticed is that our website has had a revamp. We also

have a very good Facebook page - please get your friends to

like and follow this page. We also have a District CW You

Tube, for videos that may be of interest to members and

clubs -please go and have a look.

The DG team have started their travels and for the clubs

which have allowed us to join your Zoom Meetings thank

you. The Certificates of Appreciation for the general public

are being received really well.

The GAT team are working very hard. We are putting on

many training sessions, of which 30 clubs have joined in,

but to the other 60 clubs, we would love to see you as these

Training Sessions are put on for your benefit. If there is a

training session you would like just let Lion Stu know

[email protected]. I would also like to thank the Zone

Chairs who are working so hard for all clubs.

I have two asks this month please. Firstly is to support our

Youth Projects, especially Lion Young Ambassador

competition, our way of thanking our 15-19yrs for all the

hard work they are doing in their communities. For further

details please speak to Lion Paul Murphy. Secondly since

the 1st July, we have reported we have served 9,200 people

and that is just with 7 clubs reporting. Please could clubs

report their service on MyLion. For further help please

speak to Lion Simon Moss.

My closing remark for the August District CW Newsletter is

to say Well done Captain Sir

Thomas Moore ( Captain Tom),

on your recent Knighthood,

you are a inspiration to us all.

Membership Matters.

Our first Membership Monthly Monday Meeting was held

in July and thank you to all those who were keen enough to

free to send in your ideas and to join us at the next MMMM

at the end of the Month, 24th August at 7.30pm – 8.30pm

on Zoom. Details will be circulated by email, come for as

long or as little as you can manage.

All are welcome and it would be good to be joined by some

new Lions so we can hear how you are finding your

Membership experience.

Sue Wilding Membership Coordinator [email protected] The Youngest Member in the World—at least for one day! We are proud to introduce our newest member Tom

Murphy.

It was Tom’ 18th Birthday on the 14th of July and so he was,

at long last, able to officially join the Sandwell Lions Pride.

He is the third generation in his family to become a Lion.

The first photo is Tom as a toddler at one of his first Lion’s

dinners - he loved the colourful Lions banners in the back-

ground. The second photo is from today with his happy

mum Melissa Murphy, wearing his badge.

Telling your Service Stories - Lion Simon Moss GST Lead

We don’t want Lions to be the world’s best kept secret so we need to

tell people what we do. Here’s a simple guide.

What you do What you tell the world

Plan your event

Fix a date

Determine resources required

Plan the service outcomes

Create the event on MyLion!!!

Advertise your event

Use all available channels to adver-tise your event

Ask for volunteers (if required) Tell people what you hope to achieve

Event preparation

More detailed planning Initial Risk Assessment

2. Further advertising

Continue to advertise. Thank any volunteers who have come forward and ask for more (if required) Include pictures of preparation

Go into more detail on the service outcomes telling the story of the difference the event will make to peoples lives

During the Event

Final risk assessment

Register Lions and Volunteers

Do the event

3. Tell people what you’re doing

Use social media during the day to show pictures of what you’re doing

Broadcast live if appropriate

Publicly thank Lions and volunteers

Immediately after the event

Thank Lions and Volunteers – consid-er a certificate or thank you card for volunteers

Make sure you have contact details for volunteers

Briefly review risk assessment and note any issues.

4. Tell people what you did

Use social media to thank everyone

If appropriate use pictures of Lions at work and of people being served

Focus on service outcomes either highlighting the service given or how money raised will be used to help people.

After the event

Review the event and create or up-date an operational plan so that it is easy to run the event again. If a fund raiser, determine the service use that the money will go to. Report the event on MyLion!!!

5. Finish the story

Use all available channels to publicise the service outcomes of the event

Thank everyone involved again

Use pictures of the service done with money raised rather than cheque presentations.

We are a service organisation so it’s important that we focus on the service outcomes of the fund raising events we do. People

who give their money are more interested in the good being done with it than the amount raised. If you are donating to

another charity get details of what they will do with the money so that you can tell everyone how your money has helped

people. Please remember to Report all your activities on MyLion!

LIONS CLUBS & NATIONAL FEDERATION OF YOUNG

FARMERS CLUBS

Prior to the outbreak of Covid 19 the links between the

Lions Clubs in District 105CW and the Young Farmers Clubs

in that area were getting stronger. Presentations to Young

Farmers County Executive meetings were made which

create various opportunities for us to work together.

Wellingborough & District Lions were able to supply judges

for the Northamptonshire

Young Farmers Clubs County

competitions within 24 hours,

thanks mainly to Lion

Amanda Coleshill who is our

County Young Farmers – Lions

link. Additionally, Melton

Mowbray Lions along with two clubs from 105CE supplied

judges for the East Midlands Young Farmers Regional Com-

petition finals held at Cleethorpes. As can be seen from the

picture, one competition was a “Cheer Leaders” event.

There have been many other opportunities where Lions

Clubs within 105CW have worked with Young Farmers Clubs

such as recycling glasses, diabetes screening and event

marshalling just to mention but a few.

Unfortunately, Covid 19 then

intervened and put a stop to

numerous events where both

Lions Clubs and Young

Farmers Clubs would have

worked together. Young Farmers County Organisers offices

were closed, and the staff furloughed meaning that

communication has been difficult. We did however manage

to issue a “Scrub Bag” challenge to the West Midlands

Regional Young Farmers Clubs who were willing to accept to

the benefit of Health and Care Workers within that region.

What is happening now?

With the easing of Covid 19 restrictions, Young Farmers

Clubs will try to resume their meetings while being aware of

the social distancing regulations that maybe in force from

September 2020. Our Lions County links will renew contact

with County Organisers and update the Young Farmers

Clubs details because like Lions they change their officers

annually in September.

Copies of the Lion magazine

(summer 2020) is being sent

to all Young Farmers County

Organisers introducing them

to the Lions Youth Initiatives

where hopefully they may

have suitable candidates to

put forward for the Young

Ambassadors Award, Young

Leaders in Service and Peace

Poster. If you have finished

with your copy of this summer’s edition of the Lion

magazine, please let your Zone Chair have it so that we can

recycle it.

We have recently given a presentation to Glamorgan

County Young Farmers Executive which was very well

received with positive feedback. We are also preparing to

give a presentation to Carmarthenshire County Executive.

Our Aim:

Is to develop this relationship with the National Federation

of Young Farmers so Lions Clubs International becomes the

“Service Organisation” of their choice when the time comes

for them to leave YFC and are looking to join another

organisation that serves the community. With your help

and assistance, we can achieve this goal.

For more information regarding this project and to locate

your Lions – Young Farmers link e-mail [email protected]

Coventry Leofric Lions - Furlough Support for Coventry

Food Bank

During the world wide pandemic of #COVID19, many Lions

from our club have been out and about supporting mem-

bers of our community in Coventry & Warwickshire with a

wide variety of activities.

Lion Trevor Curtis has taken this to the next stage, whilst

being furloughed from work he has volunteered his time

working for the Coventry Community Kitchen and the

Coventry Foodbank.

He has been attending the Community Kitchen twice a

week helping to prepare over fifty meals each time for

those who need a healthy hot meal at this difficult time.

Each week he has also been in to work at the Coventry

Foodbank, where he is helping sort out donations and

creating food parcels and has been busy using the picker -

he has really enjoyed making a difference to those in need.

Coventry Leofric Lions are really #Proud of Lion Trevor for

his commitment and service to our community.

Wotton Lions

Wotton Lions were asked to support the creation of a local

allotment where the community could get involved as a

group, (social distancing of course). We provided funds to

pay their deposit on the rental and to purchase a couple of

tools. Lion President Jess said “Supporting projects that

bring the community together is what Lions are about.

Pleased to help this get established during the current

pandemic”

Coventry Leofric Lions - Melvin Jones Fellow

Congratulations to Leofric Lion Peter Davies who has

recently been made a Melvin Jones Fellow, honouring his

commitment to humanitarian service to those in need

around the globe and those in our local community.

Peter is a Charter Member of Coventry Leofric Lions Club

and has completed 34 years of service, in that time he has

taken a leading role in numerous events including our

famous Donkey Derby, the walkathon and many of our

social events.

Peter has also served our club as President on three occa-

sions and during his last term of office as President (2017-

2018) he inducted our first member who is a lady (his wife

Lion Kerry). We are very #Proud of Peter and his

commitment to serving the people and community of

Coventry.

IInspiring Young People - Molly's Meals

Right at the start of the Covid-19 lockdown, Kenilworth

student Molly Bufton-Stears, the daughter of a Kenilworth

Lions Club member, decided to do something to help some

of the most vulnerable people in her local community.

Using skills she had developed during an overseas project

placement in Zanzibar last year, she set up a local service

called ‘Molly’s Meals’, cooking fresh hot meals daily and

delivering free to anyone in the local community who

needed them. The service grew rapidly, delivering to 45

residents daily within two weeks of starting, and continuing

to grow since. Donations of fresh food from local

restaurants, shops and businesses were supplemented by

cash grants from Kenilworth Lions and other local

organisations, and via a charity giving page.

Now, as lockdown restrictions have started to ease for

many, it is recognised that there continues to be a need to

support vulnerable residents in this way on a longer term

basis. Molly has now stepped back as she resumes her

previous life, but the initiative she started will continue

under the banner of the Kenilworth Covid-19 Support

Group.

The photo shows Molly receiving her certificate from Lion

Rob Sullivan, currently 1st Vice-President of Kenilworth

Coventry Leofric Lions - Supporting Coventry Crisis

Over lockdown, many vulnerable members of our commu-

nity have had problems accessing facilities and support net-

works with many services being paused or cut back.

In response to this one of Leofric Lions projects has been to

support Crisis Coventry & Warwickshire, with items to be

used in care packages for their service users.

They posted on social media in the third week of July

stating "We would like to say a huge thank you to Coventry

Leofric Lions for their donations of supplies for our care

packages. Lion Trevor has worked closely with us to get

supplies, including chocolate, food stuffs and toiletries

which were then given out to support our most vulnerable

members during the coronavirus pandemic."

Pictured is Coventry Crisis Events Coordinator Eleanor who

received the donation, along with some of the amazing sup-

plies that went into our care packages.

CAPTION COMPETITION

Send your caption to [email protected] with

‘Caption Competition’ in the header.

Remember to include your name and club in the main body.

DG Richard has arranged a prize for the best caption. The

winner will be announced in the September Newsletter.

Tetbury Lions – A year in the community

Tetbury Lions proudly announces that it has produced a

“Year in the Lions” video providing compelling insight to the

work of the club and its many achievements while

promoting the Lions as both a national and International

organisation

The video, while showing some visitor attractions of this

small market town, illustrates how Tetbury Lions, with a

broad spectrum of activities and service, has been inclusive

of all groups regardless of age, gender or ability. There is a

natural focus on the many fundraising activities the Club

undertakes and enjoys through the year, often with other

groups. In addition it acknowledges the many companies/

retail outlets which, without their support, Tetbury Lions

would not be the large and prosperous Club it is today.

This inspirational video details the many and varied range of

activities undertaken by just one Club, Tetbury Lions; it is

hoped that it may provide a template for other clubs to

follow.

This thirty minute video can be viewed by following the link

below.

LIONS VOLUNTEERS CERTIFICATE OF APPRECIATION

In recognition of

her extra

volunteering

through the

pandemic, Maggie

Bowles received a

special Certificate

of Appreciation

from Lion President

Mike Barker.

Her friend, who put

in the nomination,

Maria Manning

seen hiding at the

back, said when she saw our post about nominating she had

no hesitation in naming Maggie.

Maggie said thank you many times but, we say “Thank You

Maggie” and continue the good work.

ALDRIDGE LIONS DOUBLE HANDOVER

Lion President

Harry Fry

ended his year

in office by

handing over a

cheque for

£1000 to the

“James Brindley Foundation” to Mark Brindley.

Harry said that “He had chosen the Foundation as his

Presidents Project knowing it was being used locally and the

outcome of its use would in the long term, fulfil a Lions

objective to, help people who are less fortunate”.

Lion President Harry Fry’s final act was to Handover the

Chain of Office to his successor Lion President Mike Barker.

From a Social Distance of course

SOCIAL MEDIA CHALLENGE

DG Richard has been brushing up his skills on Social Media.

You may have noticed he is commenting more, sharing

posts and celebrating Clubs good news stories from around

the District.

I challenged him to invite all his Facebook friends to like our

District 105CW page and many of them did! We had an

increase of 121 likes and 129 followers after he had done

this simple task.

Imagine how many more followers we would have on our

District page and Club pages if every Lion did the same

thing! On a PC you will see three dots on the top right of

the Facebook page. On a mobile phone it might look like

the second picture. I can’t wait to see the results!
