DO IT TO ME ONE MORE TIME

Sometimes the price you’re asked to pay for success is truly a bargain. And in today’s

economy, we’ll take any and all bargains we can fi nd.Take the case of NFL teams that have just enjoyed winning back-to-back home games during the pre-season. One might think these teams are primed for a letdown. However,

Best Bet Champion: Stan Lisowski (13-4-1)Final 4-Week Champion (Tie):Dave Tuley (11 pts) • Dawg Pound (11 pts)

FAST FACT: Since 2001, the Oakland Raiders have gone 1-8 UNDER the total in Game Three of the NFL pre-season.

as one of our favorite football analysts, Lee Corso, would say, “Not so fast my friend!” That’s because teams in this role are a solid 38-22-1 ATS when taking to the road off a pair of home victories in the pre-season since 1983. Better yet, send them away off a double-digit win and they are a 22-7 ATS winning proposition. Dress these same guys up as dogs and they become 17-4 ATS.One qualifying play occurred last season when Green Bay invaded Arizona as a 3.5-point dog. The Packers won the whole game, 44-37! Incidentally, they also qualifi ed in a 14-0 ATS PERFECT subset by NOT covering their previous home victory by 15 or more points. Here is a list of NFL teams that will be taking to the road off back-to-back home

games this pre-season. You know what to do: 8/27 Atlanta at Miami; San Diego at New Orleans; Washington at NY Jets. 8/28 Cincinnati at Buffalo; Seattle at Minnesota. 9/2 Buffalo at Detroit; Carolina at Pittsburgh; Chicago at Cleveland; Denver at Minnesota; New Orleans at Tennessee; Tampa Bay at Houston.Editor’s Note: 100% Perfect Systems like the one outlined above appear weekly on the College and NFL cards during the regular season inside Marc Lawrence’s PERFECT SYSTEM CLUB. The PERFECT SYSTEM CLUB has gone 95-60 ATS in the past fi ve years. To become a PERFECT SYSTEM CLUB member simply log on to PLAYBOOK.COM or call 1.800.PLAYBOOK today.

Jack’s Jags are the fi rst of six ‘Double Entendres’ (teams playing with double revenge from last season – one loss in exhibition and the other during the regular season) and should be highly motivated to kicks things off in 2010 after suffering back-to-back losing campaigns for the fi rst time in the Del Rio era. The Cats have been on the prowl against NFC foes of late, posting a tidy 9-1-1 ATS mark in their last eleven and their eight-year head coach is a nifty 9-1-1 ATS as a dog in pre-season play. They’ll be tackling an Eagles’ squad that doesn’t put much credence in pre-season openers as evidenced by their current 0-6 SUATS run. They’ll also be facing a Philly bunch that is undergoing more than a nip/tuck after the departures of Donovan McNabb and Brian Westbrook. Fall harvest may be right around the corner but the corn on this ‘Kolb’ is not quite ripe for the taking – or the giving in this matter. Grab the bushel of points.

2010 NFL PRE-SEASON FOOTBALL

Friday, August 13

Saturday, August 21TAMPA BAY over Kansas City by 11

Much like Roman Polanski needs a 14-year old – bottle of Scotch, that is – some coaches need to win in order to feel better about themselves. We feel like that’s the case with Tampa’s Raheem Morris, who suffered through a three-win season in his rookie campaign. Including pre-season, the Bucs were only able to muster one win in their ten efforts in front of the home faithful. Like his previous predecessors, KC’s Todd Haley doesn’t seem to be in any hurry to impress before September. Since 2004, the Chiefs have delivered only four wins in 24 contests, while posting a hair-raising 3-21 ATS mark – including Haley’s 0-4 SU and ATS record in his 2009 inaugural season. Look for the cannon to sound at the ‘New Sombrero’ as the Bucs improve to 9-3 SU in pre-season home openers and 4-0-1 ATS in this series. Drink up!

WEEK TWO

5 BEST BET

Another ‘Dress Rehearsal’ duo threat takes place in the City of Lakes as the Seahawks and Pete Carroll join forces to take on a Vikings squad that’s just 1-3 ATS at home off back-to-back road trips. Seattle has been anything but sleepless in Game Three of the pre-season posting an eye-opening 21-5 SU and 20-6 ATS mark, including 8-4 SU and 11-1 ATS away while Carroll is 3-1 SUATS in Week Three during his previous NFL tenure. Our powerful PLAYBOOK.com database dresses up this one further as it chimes in with this little beauty: since 1985, home teams in Game Three that won exactly three pre-season games the previous season are 0-6 ATS when hosting a foe that won four or more pre-season games the previous season. We’ll supply the fi nishing touches as we note the last six pre-season matchups between these two have produced an average of 48.5 PPG, resulting in all ‘Overs’ – just the way Pete wants it.

Friday, August 27Washington over NY JETS by 8

Week Three is ‘Dress Rehearsal’ time in the NFL and the combination of Mike Shanahan and the Washington Redskins won’t require any understudies during this recital. In his days in Denver, Shanahan performed to a 9-5 SU mark in Week Three, including 2-0 SUATS as a dog, while the ‘Skins, themselves, have avoided stage fright during this week by logging a 9-2 SU and 8-3 ATS mark since 1999. The Jets, meanwhile, have had a long-running stint of their own on Broadway this time of year as they have battled the Giants in Week Three of the pre-season 15 of the last 17 years. What have they done the two times they haven’t lined up against their roommates in Week Three since 1993? How about a disinterested 0-2 SU & ATS! The Flyboys 2-4-1 ATS script in ‘Last Home Games’ also has us taking a curtain call with Shanahan and company as they prepare for the September stage.

WEEK FOURThursday, September 2

NY Jets over PHILADELPHIA by 6These two ‘pre-season rivals’ have met every year since 1985 with the Jets owning a healthy 18-7 SU and 16-8-1 ATS advantage. In fact, the Jets have won the last eight in a row. If you consider each of those contests has taken place the fi nal week of the pre-season, this dominance should really come as no surprise. The simple fact of the matter is Andy Reid could care less about pre-season fi nales. He’d rather look at 3rd and 4th string players for a fi nal time rather than play the regulars solely for the sake of winning. That’s confi rmed by his 1-9 SU and 3-7 ATS mark in pre-season fi nales since his sophomore campaign, including 1-5 SUATS at home. With the Jets a ‘phat’ 9-0 ATS in their fi nal road game of the pre-season since 2001 and Rex wanting a little bit more to chew on, don’t expect a nose dive from the fl yboys with opening day right around the corner. If the Jets are taking, so are we.

Washington over ARIZONA by 7Here we go again – riding Mike Shanahan’s coat tails during the pre-season. And why not? He’s an excellent dog this time of year (12-3-1 ATS when taking more than two points) and he’s also 11-2 SU and 12-1 ATS in his last 13 pre-season fi nales. We have a feeling he’s hell-bent on instilling a positive attitude in his team as they prepare for their season opener with Dallas next week… and he couldn’t have asked for a better opponent. Some coaches don’t give a damn about exhibition games and, as we stated earlier, Whisenhunt is one of them. His 0-6 SUATS mark as a pre-season favorite fi ts with Shanahan’s dog record like an athlete in a Kardashian bedroom. We’ll gladly grab the points and whatever else is being offered. We suggest you hop on for the ride.

FAST FACT: The Denver Broncos are 10-0 SU and ATS in Game Four of the pre-season.

Saturday, August 14Houston over ARIZONA by 6

Like Philly, Zona gets a facelift as Kurt Warner decides to bag a fabulous 12-year NFL career and spend more time with his wife – who has apparently spent the last couple of years getting a makeover of her own. Even with Warner, the Cardinals have been slow pre-season starters (0-3 SUATS last three openers) and have dropped their last four versus AFC foes. While Arizona head man Ken Whisenhunt treats exhibition play like a red-headed stepchild (2-10 SU, 3-9 ATS, including an atrocious 0-6 SUATS as a favorite), Houston’s Gary Kubiak has posted a solid overall 9-5-2 ATS pre-season log, including 5-1 ATS away versus the NFC and a near spotless 8-1 ATS mark when taking points. From our viewpoint, this coaching philosophy matchup doesn’t appear to be broke and we’re certainly not about to fi x it. Texans avenge last season’s 28-21 regular season loss in the desert here tonight.

4 BEST BET

Along with Gary Kubiak’s terrifi c pre-season numbers (see Game One writeup), we have a couple of other factors in our favor as we ride the Texans for a second straight week. For starters, Houston will be looking to avenge a 38-14 whippin’ they suffered in last year’s pre-season home opener when the Saints came marching in – their worst pre-season defeat ever under Kubiak. More importantly, however, Drew Brees and company will be tangling with our INCREDIBLE STAT on page 3 as it points out the diffi culties defending Super Bowl champs face in Game Two of the exhibition season. With the Saints just 2-10 SU and 1-11 ATS in pre-season home openers since 1998 and 5-13 SU and 4-14 ATS in their last 18 as exhibition chalk, we’ll look for the Texans to return the favor in this Superdome lid lifter.

BETTING ON NFL PRE-SEASON OVER/UNDERS

Welcome back, boys! When last we spoke, KING CREOLE was off a 4**** Best Bet WINNER on the

NEW ORLEANS SAINTS plus the points in the 2010 Super Bowl. Now it’s time to get back to work!

You’ll notice that just like in last season’s issue of the PLAYBOOK Pre-Season Football Newsletter, the anchor for our 2010 Pre-Season Preview is the OU line range chart listed on this page. What I’ve done is to break down all NFL pre-season Over / Under results based on each different closing OU line in the last ten seasons (the actual line at kickoff). Some of the results are not too revealing. But there are a handful of OU line ranges that have resulted in pretty predictable fi nal scores.

NFL Over / Under lines in exhibition games have been as low as 30 points… and as high as 46 points in the last nine seasons. And our chart breaks down into the following four categories: Total (or overall) OU results… Home FAVORITE OU results… Home UNDERDOG OU results… and the ‘Most Recent Trend’ (or MRT) in each particular OU line.

Please remember that these results are not ATS results. They are Over / Under results with OVERS always listed fi rst and UNDERS always listed second. Our very fi rst NFL pre-season Over / Underr rule is:

1. Over/Under LINE RANGES

by Victor King / King Creole Sports

Pre-Season Home UNDERDOGS will usually result in an

“UNDER”-whelming outcome!

Play a pre-season game ‘OVER the Total

’ when the

OU line is 34.5 to 36 points!

FAST FACT: The Miami Dolphins are 1-7 O/U in the pre-season under head coach Tony Sparano.

A higher-than-normal OU line in an NFL Exhibition game is usually

justifi ed by an ‘OVER’ result!

Since the 2001 season, NFL ‘X’ games in which the home team is an UNDERDOG (or ‘pick em) have gone a very impressive 32-67-3 O/U overall. Regardless of the OU line, these pre-season home dogs have gone Under 68% of the time! The most profi table Under results have been in the very fi rst

The way that we have broken down our pre-season chart is by each different individual Over / Under line. The nice thing is that we

In this query, we’ll take a look at some of the higher OU lines in an NFL pre-season game. The MRT tells us not to ‘fall for the hype’… but there IS an exception if the OU line is REALLY high.

We’ll focus our attention on the OU line range of 41.5 or more points. In a regular season game, an OU line of 41.5 points is just about average these days. However, in NFL Exhibition play, the average OU line is somewhere in the 34 to 35 point range. So a line of 41.5 or more is just about a full touchdown higher than the ‘norm’. A line that high is what the linesmakers would consider to be a pre-season ‘shootout’… equivalent to a regular season game with an OU line of 49 or more points. So let’s run the query for NFL ‘X” games with an OU line of 41.5 or higher points.

In the last fi ve seasons, these games have hit at a surprising OVER percentage of 72% (13-5 O/U overall). The average OU line in these games has been 42.5 points. And the actual scoring average in these 18 games has been 48.4 points. That’s an OVER ‘cushion’ of +5.9 PPG. And on a fi nal note, if the home team is favored by less than (<) 6 points in these ‘expected shootouts’, the results improve to an impressive 13-2 O/U. Last season, these games averaged a whopping 54.8 PPG!

week of Exhibition play… Or the very last week.

Here’s your breakdown of that overall fi gure based on each week of the pre-season: GAME ONE Home Dogs (or pick em) have gone 6-17 O/U (74% Under). GAME TWO Home Dogs (or pick em) have gone 7-14-2 O/U (67%). GAME THREE Home Dogs (or pick em) have gone 14-19 O/U (58%). GAME FOUR Home Dogs (or pick em) have gone 4-12-1 O/U (75%). And GAME FIVE Home Dogs (or pick em) have gone 1-5 O/U (83%). So the most consistent Under results have occurred in Games One, Four, and Five (11-34-1 O/U / 76%).

Another aspect of NFL Exhibition home underdogs is trying to understand the following question: What is the reason or motivation for the oddsmakers to make a team a road favorite or home underdog in the fi rst place? One explanation would have to be that a team is priced as a home underdog in exhibition play if they are playing off a loss in the previous week… or multiple losses in a row. So with that in mind, here’s another query I ran in the PLAYBOOK Pre-Season database in regards to home underdogs:

10-25-2 O/U for all Game 2 > home dogs playing off a SU loss (71%)…. 2-9 O/U for all Game 3 > home dogs playing off 2 or more losses in a row (82%)…. And 0-3 O/U for all Game 4 > home dogs playing off 3 or more losses in a row (100%). From this query, our conclusion is that UNDER results are more predictable and consistent with each consecutive pre-season loss.

The bottom ‘line’ (pun intended) is to NEVER play a pre-season game to go “OVER” when the home team is an underdog or the line is ‘pick em.

can lump a few different lines together to come up with a solid ‘line range’ result. And that’s the case here. In our ‘what have you done for me LATELY?’ query, we note that the most recent patterns for these OU lines have gone 34-14-1 in the last three seasons. That’s all NFL Exhibition home favorites of -1.5 > points with an OU line in the range of 34.5 to 36 points.

Here’s the breakdown by individual OU Line: 7-1 O/U for 34.5… 9-6-1 O/U for 35.0… 9-2 O/U for 35.5… and 9-5 O/U for 36. Add ‘em all together and you get 71% for the Over in the last three seasons.

2. Pre-Season Week-by-Week OU

TEAM TENDENCIES

This will be Cincinnati’s 3rd game of the 2010 pre-season. But for the Eagles, it’s actually Game #2 (Cincy gets an extra

game as they start the year with a Hall-of-Fame date with the Dallas Cowboys). So with an added game under their belts, this one is the ‘tune up’ for the Bengals. And it’s the fi rst situational System that I queried in our Playbook NFL database. 7-1 O/U since 2001: All NFL ‘X’ Game 3 HOME teams (Cincy) versus an opponent playing Game 2 (Philly). The Bengals are also off a home game vs the Broncos. 4-0 O/U since 2000: NFL ‘X’ Game 3 teams playing in the 2nd of BB home games… If they also played in the Hall-of-Fame game (Cincy).

3. Pre-Season Series History OU PATTERNS

Arizona vs Chicago: 3-0 O/U (42.3 comb PPG)

Arizona vs Oakland: 1-5 O/U (31.8)

Atlanta vs Jacksonville: 4-1 O/U (38.2)

Baltimore vs Washington: 1-4 O/U (24.4)

Buffalo vs Cincinnati: 3-1 O/U (46.7)

Buffalo vs Detroit: 1-5 O/U (28.3)

Carolina vs Pittsburgh: 1-4-1 O/U (30.4)

Chicago vs Cleveland: 1-6 O/U (30.1)

Cincinnati vs Indianapolis: 1-5 O/U (31.5)

Dallas vs Oakland: 3-0 O/U (49.0)

Detroit vs Pittsburgh: 3-0 O/U (47.6)

Jacksonville vs Tampa Bay: 5-1 O/U (40.2)

Speaking of previous foes, we also note that NFL ‘X’ home teams have gone 5-0 O/U in the last 3 years AFTER playing the Denver Broncos (Cincy). A look at this particular Day of the Week also points us in the right direction. 7-1 O/U last 3 years: All NFL ‘X’ Game 3 teams playing on a FRIDAY. On the Philadelphia side, this will be the fi rst of back-to-back road games for the Eagles. 13-1 O/U since 2001: All NFL ‘X’ Game 2 teams playing in the FIRST of BB road games (Philly).

The 2nd pre-season game has always been an important one for Andy Reid of the Eagles. For you ATS fans, we note that Philly has gone 9-1-1 ATS in Game 2 over the last 11 seasons. They have scored 20 or more points SIX times in the last 7 years. And we note that PHILLY has gone a perfect 6-0 O/U in Games 2 and 3 of the pre-season in the last 3 years. The clincher to this Best Bet is the fact that the Bengals have gone a perfect 5-0 O/U as pre-season favorites against a NFC opponent in the last 4 years.

I t seems like only yesterday when Mack Brown leaned heavily on Colt McCoy, then watched in horror when his star QB was forced out of the

biggest game of the year with a shoulder injury in the fi rst quarter – thus paving the way to Alabama’s victory over Texas in the 2009 BCS title game. Brown and the Longhorns are back in 2010, sans McCoy, while the Tide look to repeat last year’s celebrated feat. But before we peer that far ahead, let’s take a look at my list of teams that are poised to become moneymakers in the season ahead. Remember, as one of my all-time favorite groups, the Traveling Wilburys, once put it, “Everybody’s got somebody to lean on. Put your body next to mine, and dream on… Handle me with care.”

NFL’S 2010 TOP ATS TEAMS

NCAA’S 2010 TOP ATS TEAMS

“Been beat up and battered ‘roundBeen sent up, and I’ve been shot down.

I’ve been uptight and made a messBut I’ll clean it up myself, I guessOh, the sweet smell of success.”

FLORIDA STATE – The ball is now in Jimbo’s court and he’s itching to make a score. Compared to last year’s murderers’ row schedule, this year’s itinerary looks like a piece of cake. Behind a huge and talented offensive line, QB Christian Ponder fi gures to receive a fair share of Heisman votes. If new DC Mark Stoops patches a leaky ‘D’, the Sems will begin the post-Bowden era in grand style.

MIAMI OHIO – No, it’s not a typo and no, it’s not the Miami Hurricanes. The RedHawks had the misfortune of being the most turnover-prone team in the land in 2009. As such, the improvement made on both sides of the ball went unnoticed by most observers. A promising young quarterback and a rookie coach that are now in their 2nd years, along with 17 returning starters, fi gure to reap the rewards of a much better effort than last year’s numbers.

MISSOURI – Like a lot of substandard teams in 2009, the Tigers suffered from a bad case of acne. Thirty of 44 players on the season-ending two-deep roster were either sophomores or freshmen. They’re back, along with the key ingredients from a defense that improved signifi cantly in 2009. With only fi ve bowlers (all conference foes) dotting this year’s schedule, a 5-0 start could build momentum en route to a Big 12 North Division title.

NORTH CAROLINA – A fl ock of returning starters for a team wracked with injuries can spell the right recipe to a team that can cook. Master chef Butch Davis has all the ingredients in place to make a run at the ACC this season. Remember this: in his college football head coaching career, Davis is 59-3 SU and 42-9-1 ATS in games in which his team scores 28 or more points. He’ll add to those totals in 2010.

OKLAHOMA – A red-faced coach with a ton of talent makes a lethal combination. It is our belief that it’s only a matter of time before the two make

a statement. The time is now and the declaration should be forthcoming this season. QB Landry Jones fi gures to benefi t after fi lling in for Sam Bradford last season. Don’t forget, Bob Stoops has won 110 games the last 10 years and is coming off a 5-loss effort last year. The last time his team lost that many games they went 13-0 and won a national championship. Read into that what you may.

LET’S KEEP AN EYE ON: ARIZONA STATE – Devils dipped to 4-8 last season, but not because they didn’t bring the effort. Injuries forced 18 players to make their fi rst start, 14 of whom return in 2010. Meanwhile, 23 players on the depth chart were of sophomore eligibility or younger. Yet they still managed to outstat eight foes behind the best defense in the Pac-10. Plenty of room for improvement here… GEORGIA – The Bulldogs were set back on their heels last year when star QB Matthew Stafford opted out for the NFL. Ironically, the only starter not returning on offense this year is last year’s quarterback, Joe Cox. Rest assured, Mark Richt will not accept the numbers this team put up last season. Money burners two years in a row, look for a reversal in 2010… NC STATE – The Wolfpack fi t our profi le of a team that improved its numbers on both sides of the ball, only to slip both SU and ATS the previous campaign. Tom O’Brien will not settle for fourth successive seven-loss season, not with all-ACC performers QB Russell Wilson and WR Owen Spencer leading the attack… TEXAS A&M – The Aggies’ 5th ranked offense improved 125 YPG last season behind QB Jerrod Johnson. More important, the defense made a huge U-turn in 2009 and returns nine starters from that unit. With only four true road games on the slate, it would be no surprise to see A&M land a New Year’s Day bowl bid this year… WISCONSIN – Loaded with returning starters and a soft schedule (only three opponents had winning records last year), the Badgers look primed to make a concerted run for the top spot in the Big 10 in 2010. And why not. They’ve averaged 9.5 wins per season under Bret Bielema.

BALTIMORE – Simply put, John Harbaugh doesn’t get the respect he deserves. In two years as a head coach in this league, his teams have averaged 11.5 straight up and pointspread wins per season. And best of all, he beats up on the teams he’s supposed to, going 12-0 SU and 11-1 ATS against teams with losing records. With only seven opponents on this year’s agenda with winning records in 2009, look for Harbaugh to keep these birds in the black in 2010.

CINCINNATI – Somehow, these Bengals seem to make it to this page every year. Behind a healthy Carson Palmer last season, and despite staggering down the stretch when they fi nished 3-4 SU and 1-6 ATS, they somehow made it to the playoffs. A tough road slate fi nds the ‘Natti facing only one foe that owned a losing record last year, meaning these Cats should puppy up plenty in 2010. That fi ts Marvin Lewis’ personality like a glove, considering he’s 34-28-2 ATS as a dog and 19-30-2 ATS as a favorite.

DETROIT – A new order is underway in the Motor City and it’s not government backed. While the Lions aren’t yet ready to compete for a North Division title, they are in position to cash tickets. Behind

a blossoming offense, head coach Jim Schwartz will continue applying his defensive schemes to a refortifi ed defense, thus keeping the Lions competitive. Should QB Matthew Stafford stay healthy, Detroit can start looking to win games.

SAN DIEGO– A legitimate Super Bowl contender this year, the Chargers made huge forward strides last year en route to a 13-win campaign that was cut short with a startling fi rst-round playoff loss to the upstart Jets. With only one winning opponent on the itinerary the fi rst six games of the season, and just one winning foe during the fi nal fi ve games, the Lightning Bolts are poised to make an impact in 2010. Look for Phillip Rivers to improve on his sparkling 38-23-2 ATS mark in his NFL career in games in which he’s not favored by over 11 points.

SEATTLE – The Pete Carroll money train makes its way back into the NFL and he looks ready for the challenge. Carroll and plenty of his former USC staff have revamped an offense that promises to be explosive from Day One. As a result, they become an odds-on favorite to improve the Seahawks’ six-spread win effort last year. Note: Seattle was 0-6 SU and ATS against winning teams in 2009. We’re betting that won’t be the case this year.

LET’S KEEP AN EYE ON: HOUSTON – Six of the Texans’ seven losses last year were by eight points or less. Behind an underrated defense that’s improved each of the past two seasons, look for the Texans to top their fi rst winning season ever in 2009 with a playoff cherry this campaign… NEW ENGLAND – It’s hard to turn an eye on a coach named Belichick and a QB called Brady. This dynamic duo is 70-36-5 ATS in games together either as a dog or favorite of nine or less points. We’re not about to fade that and neither should you… NY GIANTS – What a perplexing season for the G-Men last year. A promising 5-0 start went right in the toilet as an inability to beat .400 or greater opponents did them in and they closed 3-8 SU and 2-9 ATS. The feeling here is they’re closer to 2007-08 status than the atypical year they endured in 2009… OAKLAND – Slowly but surely the Raiders are making ATS headway, winning 5, 6, 6, 7 and 8 pointspread verdicts the last fi ve years running. It’s what having a surplus of top-fi ve draft picks year in and year out does to a balance sheet. QB Jason Campbell is a major upgrade and their propensity for pulling major upsets (6-6 SU and 9-3 ATS last 12 as dogs of seven or more points) certainly deems Oakland noteworthy… WASHINGTON – Redskins were on our watch list year and we watched as the team dissolved right before our eyes. The Shanahan regime takes over and that alone should inaugurate a concerted effort. Division revenge for being swept all six games in 2009 becomes Priority One.

Now, let’s start the music and let the games begin. As the Wilburys like to put it, “Well it’s all right, even if the sun don’t shine. Well it’s all right, we’re going to the end of the line…” Good luck this football season. ♦
