ACT ONE Seriously serious villains
The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus Christopher Marlowe's Renaissance tragedy about a great scholar who sells his soul to the Devil in return for unlimited power and knowledge. In this segment, Faustus seals the blood pact with the devil then questions Mephistophilis about the nature of Hell-doubting its existence, but not doubting the power of Mephistophilis.
Treasure Island One of the first great pirate adventures, Robert Louis Stevenson's novel pits the young and idealistic Jim Hawkins against the nefarious Long John Silver, both of whom have set sail to find Pirate Captain John Flint's long-lost treasure. In this scene, Long John tries to wheedle information from the unsuspecting Jim, who thinks Silver is a friend.

Night Must Fall Emlyn Williams' chiller about a young laborer who charms his way into a wealthy old lady's home and wins over the household so he can steal her money. Only one person suspects he is not the upstanding young lad he seems to be-and here we see her challenging him. Night Must Fall is a departure from the usual murder mystery, in that the author treats the villain with a certain amount of understanding.
Macbeth Shakespeare's tale of ambition, madness, and murder has held the stage continuously since its first performance in (probably) 1606. In this segment, Macbeth seeks reassurance about his future from the witches who first predicted his ascent to power. They show him three apparitions who, unknown to him, prophesy his downfall.
Dracula For well over 100 years, Bram Stoker's famous vampire tale has been endlessly re-told and embellished upon in books, on stage, and in film . Here we see Jonathan Harker narrating the events of one terrifying night in Castle Dracula.
Othello A villain's villain, lago is out to destroy Othello. The easiest way to do this is to play upon Othello's insecurities about his young and lovely wife, Desdemona. In this segment from Act Il l, lago effectively plants the seed of doubt in Othello's mind.
Hedda Gabler Nearly 300 years after Othello first appeared, Norwegian dramatist Henrik Ibsen created what may be his own version of the conniving I ago-in Hedda Gabler. Bored, jealous, and manipulative, Hedda greets Mrs. Elvsted, an old school mate, and proceeds to wangle information from her about Eilert Lovborg, whom Hedda knew in a wilder, more carefree time in her life. In this segment, we see Hedda at her most persuasive.
The Imaginary Invalid French actor-playwright Moliere's timeless comedy about a rich old fool who marries a lovely young woman who knows a good opportunity when she sees it.
ACT TWO The lighter side of villainy
The Drunkard W.H. Smith's moralistic tale about a young man, caught up in the evils of Drink, who leaves his family to live a life of dissolution in the Wicked City. Here we see Mary, his long-suffering wife, who has come to the city in search of him. We also see the nasty varlet who would take advantage of her.
Tartuffe Moliere's comedy about a smooth-talking, pious hypocrite who uses religion as a mask for his scheming. In this scene, the wife tries to wise her husband up to Tartuffe's treachery.
Fashion The desperate need to be in fashion is nothing new. In 1845, American socialite, playwright, and actress Anna Cora Mowatt blasted her peers for their fascination with all things foreign-from customs to modes of dress-to available bachelors. In this scene, the newly rich Mrs. Tiffany gets ready to welcome what she thinks is a famous foreign count into what she believes is her fashionable home.
Chicago Murderess Roxie Hart is given the chance to prove that she is innocent in spirit. The press loves it. Adapted from Maurine Dallas Watkins' 1926 play.
The Maltese Moroccan Goldfinch In this parody of 1940s American film noir, we see the usual suspects-not to mention villains galore.
