PLAY IS THE WAY

Play is the Way teaches social and emotional learning through guided games, classroom activities and by using consistent and empowering language.

Over the past few years our school has been implementing the Play is the Way programme across all year levels. Our children have been involved in ongoing games, which have been demonstrated at our Sportfest and at our assemblies, as well as classroom activities, discussing and unpacking the 5 Life Rafts.

The Play is the Way philosophy and language has formed the basis of our Behaviour Education and Student Self-Management (BESSM) policy, which is available on our website.

The next part of the programme, which further supports self-regulation and actively becoming a productive member of our school community, includes deve lop ing empathy . Empathy development is supported by the following 6 virtues: good manners friendliness, compassion, courage, persistence/ resilience, and tolerance/ acceptance. To launch our focus on empathy our Wellbeing Committee has been very active in developing and implementing our “Put Yourself in Someone Else’s Shoes” project.

“Put Yourself in Someone Else’s Shoes”

Have you noticed single shoes in odd places around the school? The shoes are part of our whole school approach to teaching the virtue of empathy.

Every week for the remainder of the term a shoebox will arrive in each class. Inside the shoebox is a shoe and a written scenario, glued to the inside top of the box.

The class reads this scenario and discusses how the owner may be feeling, why they may be experiencing this feeling and how our students could help or show empathy to the situation. Other activities will be generated from this discussion, such as role plays, posters, written responses, stories, artwork etc.

Empathy – what is it? An awareness of others The ability to see things from another’s

point of view The ability to identify with the plight,

state or needs of another. By using a whole school approach we

are working towards the virtue of empathy becoming an entrenched habit of action for our school community.

The ultimate objective of social and emotional learning is the attainment of empathy.

We can’t just consume our way to a more sustainable environment

~ Ecowarrior Princess

We’ve been focusing on EMPATHY so today I’d like us to think empathetically about our future generations.

In recent news there’s been a lot of focus on the damage plastic is having on our environment, resulting in the banning of plastic straws and many stores joining the plastic bag ban.

Of course we can all do our bit to protect our environment from using reusable cups for our daily coffee, choosing paper straws or no straws for our drinks and being aware of the packaging on the products we buy.

I would like to suggest that we can do something even simpler than all of that, that may have a significant impact on our school environment.

When the school issues permission notes up to 250 copies are printed and distributed. Sadly each time a note is sent home, the front office ends up printing up to a further 100 copies to replace lost or damaged notes.

Imagine the trees that are being used to create the paper required for all the extra notes, not to mention the financial cost of producing duplicate notes.

I’d like to set you a challenge: when you are given the next permission slip, see if you can keep track of it, and have it returned within the week!

Together lets strive to reduce our impact on our environment so we can leave our future generations a healthy, thriving Earth.

I don’t want to protect the environment, I want to create a world where the environment doesn’t need protecting.

Term 3 2018 Recycling Challenge

Welcome to the first update for Term 3 Recycling Challenge.

Three weeks into the term and 1,766 containers have been brought in sorted,

counted and cashed in.

Keep up the good work and continue to regularly bring in your containers.

A reminder to families to please contact us and let us know if your child is sick or unable to attend their pre-booked session.

If you have a talent or skill that you would like to share with our OSHC children, please come and speak to us.

We are coming up to week 5 and fees for the last Vacation Care period are due for payment. No bookings for future Vac Care sessions can be accepted until fees are settled or an arrangement is made with the Director.

Our Quality Improvement Plan, policies, philosophy etc are being reviewed this term. Ideas and helpful feedback is welcome from all stakeholders. Please see Sheryle or one of our Educators for further details.

National Science Week in Room 8

September Preschool and School Closure Day

“He has terrible tusks, and terrible claws, and terrible teeth in his

terrible jaws. He has knobbly knees, and turned out toes, and a

poisonous wart at the end of his nose. His eyes are orange, his

tongue is black; he has purple prickles all over his back”.

In Preschool, we have been exploring the deep dark woods where

the Gruffalo and other animals live. The Gruffalo is a magical tale

of a mouse who takes a walk through the woods looking for a nut.

On his travels, he comes across predators. The mouse creates an

imaginary Gruffalo to survive, however, the Gruffalo turns out to

be real.

The children have retold the story of The Gruffalo in pictures and

words. Each child has drawn a picture of the Gruffalo

and described his features. These pictures are

currently on display in our Preschool forest. We have

looked at many questions, such as ‘Why were the

other animals scared of the Gruffalo?’ We have also

been experimenting with rhyming words, phonics

and adjectives.

Next week, we will be celebrating our love of books

during Book Week. The Preschool children will be

having a Book Week parade on Tuesday 21st August

and Friday 24th

August. Could the children please

dress up as their favourite book character? No super

heroes please.

Lastly, a few thankyous...

Thank you to the families that have returned their

Preschool survey. Surveys are due by the 24th

August.

Thank you for helping us with our Recycling

Challenge. We aim to reach our goal of 400 cans and

bottles. This equates to approximately 10 containers/

bottles per child. Please continue to bring your clean

10c containers to preschool.

Thank you to the Caudle Family for their tremendous

efforts last weekend. They helped us to complete

many jobs at the working bee. Another working bee

will be scheduled during Spring. Date to be advised.
