Principals Message - Welcome back to Term 2. On behalf of all the staff at Plattsburg my sincere thank you for the amazing support you have given to school structures as we move to get kids back to school safely and in line with health guidelines. We have been blown out of the water by the online learning response and the fact that some kids are working on their weekends to finish things. Staff skills in the use of technology has accelerated and once we are full steam ahead we will endeavour to keep those new ways of learning that our students now enjoy. We have seen some high quality work and great enthusiasm. We are here to support parents/carers in this challenging time and we want to support you. Teaching staff working with your child on Distance Learning now have a direct phone number for you to ring. ose contact numbers are in this newsletter and on our web page. On the days staff are not teaching face-to-face they can be contacted directly between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. and then again between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. As students return there will be changes to routines and practices. Particularly around hygiene. We will be ensuring every student washes their hands regularly, are not sharing equipment and that they are well throughout the day. As you will already know it is important not to send sick children to school. We are still using the open space of Federal Park at lunch time to give our students a chance to exercise and have fun playing non- contact games. Our DS games are still available for students and we have introduced a range of craſt activities too. Please do not send any games equipment to school with your child. “One Day Attendance” procedures are continued on page 2 of this newsletter. Support for ParentsFrom Monday 11th May, teachers are available on the days students and their parents are managing Learning From Home. Parents can call teachers between 9-11am, and between 2-3pm on the numbers listed below.

2G Creative WritingThis story begins with a girl named Ellie who was starting her first day at a new high school. Ellie has a dog named Max who is her best friend, they go everywhere together. Ellie wanted to walk to school for her first day. Ellie wanted to walk through the forest to get to their school. When Ellie started walking in the forest, she noticed that the path had puddles from the rain last night, it was very hard to walk through the mud.

All of a sudden Max ran away. Ellie ran after Max. It was very slippery on the muddy path. Ellie found Max, he was stuck in a thick muddy puddle right up to his belly. “Oh no, how will I get Max out?” Ellie cried. Ellie tried lifting him out of the puddle, but he was too heavy. Ellie tried pulling him out, but his collar slipped off. “Nothing’s working” cried Ellie.

Ellie ran to get help, she found a circus down the hill. She met a clown called Bobo who was going to try and help her. Bobo blew up some balloons to take to Max. Ellie put Max’s collar back on his neck then Bobo tied the balloons around his belly while Ellie held his lead. Max began to float. “He’s out! Max is saved. Thank you Bobo” said Ellie.Boo says to Ellie, “you can’t go to school like that, let me help you get cleaned up.” Bobo took Ellie and Max to his magic washing machine. They walked in muddy and came out clean. “Thanks Bobo” said Ellie. “Woof Woof ” said Max. Ellie left and continued walking to school, they got to the gate just as the bell rang. Isabella 2G

There was a girl called Alice and she had a dog. She needed to go somewhere, but the dog did not want her to go. The dog decided to sneakily get its leash and put it in her hand. Then he tried to put it over his head and finally he did it. Then he got 5 balloons and tied it on him.

When she got to the shops everyone was looking at her, she was wondering why everyone was looking at her. But when she looked around she saw her dog. She was not cranky she was happy.

When they got home she gave the dog some food and then played with the dog and went for a walk. Aaliyah (2G)

Opportunity Class DelayThe placement process for opportunity class entry in 2021, including the Opportunity Class Placement Test, will be delayed until later in the year. As a result, applications will not open on 28 April 2020 as previously advised.

This delay is in response to the social distancing measures that are currently in place to help slow the spread of COVID-19 throughout the community.

The opportunity class placement will still go ahead in 2020 however, the process for that, including the timeline, will look a little different this year. We intend to ensure Year 5 students are placed opportunity classes in 2021 with minimal disruption to schools and families.

The department will continue to work closely with NSW Health to ensure people have access to the latest advice on how to keep staff, students and the community safe.

Revised dates for applications, tests and process changes (including any changes to school assessment scores) will be announced as soon as they are confirmed. Web pages will be updated shortly to reflect this message.

Please encourage staff, parents and carers to continue to monitor the department's website via https://e ducat ion .nsw.gov.au/publ ic -schools/selective-high-schools-and-opportunity-classes/year-5 to remain up to date with information relating to opportunity classes.
