Foreword This is a compilation of information on plant pathogens identified and reported to be present on the island of Guam up until the time of publication. It is intended for general use, particularly of interest to agricultural workers, quarantine personnel, students and the public in general.

The fragile ecosystem in our tropical island demands that we guard our borders with zeal because any invasive species that gains access is very likely to take root and multiply. History is full of accounts of plant disease epidemics affecting humanity, causing famines, wars, migrations and even death.

In an ecosystem such as in a tropical island, removing one plant species by the introduction of a pest may upset the delicate balance of the entire ecosystem; other species, whether plant, animal, or microbial, that were depending on the eliminated species for food or shelter will also become imbalanced. Humans depend on the ecosystem in many ways: food production (not all plant species), shelter from the sun, from storms, prevention of erosion, etc. Erosion not only washes away the only soil for thousands of miles around, it harms the reef as well, which protects the island from wave action. It is all inter-connected.

Losses caused by plant diseases at the end of the 20th century were estimated at 13.6% of total world production. Control of plant diseases, when it is available (not always possible), may be costly in terms of pesticide prices and labor costs; furthermore, there is usually an environmental side-effect that comes with the use of pesticides, such as run-offkilling coral reef species, or contamination of drinking water, etc. The best and first line of defense against plant diseases is exclusion, or keeping them out in the first place. The fewer plant diseases we allow into Guam, the fewer plant diseases our farmers and homeowners need to control.

The information is based on the author's notes over more than 20 years at UOG and on the publications listed in the reference list below. When only a genus name appears and no species name is given for a particular pathogen, an identification to species could not be verified.
