September is a busy month for both

APICS and your APICS Chapter. At

the end of September, APICS will

unveil its new Brand Identity at the International Conference in

Orlando, Florida. The brand states in part APICS develops

and empowers SC Professionals, is an essential partner in

transforming the way people do business, driving growth and

working with customers. This month truly reflects this in your

    APICS Chapter.

Members of the Central Indiana Chapter have been working

with Conexus to develop Hire Technology training

programs based on the APICS body of knowledge to

prepare high school and GED students for jobs in the Supply

Chain and Logistics areas. This program was rolled out to a

small group of schools in the 2012-2013 school year. With

the initial success, a state-wide launch is being conducted in

the 2013-2014 school year. Local chapter members were

part of a summer program to train a large group of teachers

    for the state-wide program.

As a result of the chapters involvement in the Hire Technology

program, the chapter was nominated to partner with Sonar

Studios to create a promotional video for the chapter.

Preliminary planning is complete and filming for the video will

take place at this months Professional Development Meeting

(PDM) at the Mansion on September 12th. I invite you to

respond to the chapters request for your career story and

how APICS was part of your success in transforming the way

you do business and your professional growth. Representatives

of Sonar Studios will be set up in the front parlor of the

Mansion to interview and film your story at the PDM.

Finally at the PDM, David Holt and Claudia Cummins from

Conexus will be our speakers. They will cover the Hire

Technology efforts as well as the other activities Conexus has

been leading to improve distribution and transportation for

Indiana in support of Advanced Manufacturing and Logistics.

As you can see, it continues to be a busy time for your APICS

chapter. We are currently looking for volunteers to help us on

our board. Please contact me or any other board member if

you are interested. Ill see you at the September 12th PDM.

What Makes a Supply Chain Successful? New Research Initiative from the APICS Foundation and Michigan State University to Redefine the Future of Global Supply Chain Management

CHICAGO (August 13, 2013) APICS, the worlds largest and most respected association for supply chain and opera-tions management professionals, today announced its research organization, the APICS Foundation, will begin an im-portant new research initiative in partnership with Michigan State University (MSU). The study will identify and examine the capabilities necessary for strategic supply chain success, thus redefining the future of global supply chain manage-ment.

Supply Chain Management: Beyond the Horizon, is an industry-focused initiative with research and educational com-ponents conducted by the APICS Foundation and MSUs Department of Supply Chain Management, with the support of the MSU Executive Development Programs and the Broad College of Business. The study is being carried out over a two-year period, with initial results to be published in 2014. Support is being provided by the APICS Foundation and the John H. McConnell Chair in Business Administration at MSU.

The study examines factors in three areas: an organizations business model, management, and the interrelationship between the business model and supply chain operations.

Supply chain optimization goes far beyond being better, faster and cheaper, said David Closs, John H. McConnell chaired professor of business administration and chair of the department of supply chain management at Michigan State University. We need to understand the factors that facilitate and inhibit the transformation of a supply chain from tacti-cal to strategic. While previous studies have demonstrated the importance of supply chain management and helped to identify the capabilities that positively contribute to supply chain performance, a crucial question remains: How does a supply chain become strategic? Beyond the Horizon will provide a blueprint that enables such a progression. This major undertaking, in partnership with the team of esteemed educators and researchers from MSU as well as APICS members, will generate relevant, actionable insights that promise to advance the design and execution of sup-ply chain operations going forward, said Sharon R...
