Do You Remember this tragedy? It was May, 12 1998


It was May, 12 1998, Indonesia’s economic condition was chaos that influenced by financial crisis.

Lot of people, especially college student who got anger to President Soeharto regime due to corrupt government did protest and demonstration.


Some of them came from Trisakti University. They went to House of Representatives to insisted President Soeharto to resign from his incumbency. and asserted for reformation.

The clash between the demonstrators and police couldn’t be avoided, four Trisakti students died.

Those Four young guys are Elang Mulia Lesmana, Heri Hertanto, Hafidin Royan, and Hendriawan Sie. They are awarded as

“Reformation Heroes”


Among those students who joined the movement, there were Indra J Piliang, Fadjroel Rahman, Wanda Hamidah, Taufik Basari, Fadlizon, Rama Pratama, etc who fought for governmental reformation in Indonesia



Youth always be the part of history. They have bravery to change one condition, they

have creativity to create something, and they have

independence for not being intervened by other parties.

In 1998 we had them all

nowadays?

Don’t talk about the ‘young heroes’ who have many followers, who have been broadcasted by national TV and who are already famous

Lets take a look on some youths and concrete movements that are existing now.

They are inspirational


Political Movement : Club SPEAK! @clubSPEAK

SPEAK or the abbreviation of Suara Pemuda Anti-Korupsi (Youth Voice of Anti-Corruption was pioneered by Retha Dungga. It is a community of Indonesian youth who has commitment in supporting Indonesia without corruption.

Frequently hold workshop and internal discussion for those young people.

Those young people become the agent of change who continually keep spreading the message of anti-corruption via online and offline activity to their friends.


Social Movement : Shoebox Project

This project is initiated by a group of youth named Ozka, Milly, Rina, Abdi, Putri, Gita, Fani, Angga, and Indri that has tagline :

“Because shoes need its box, not the otherwise..“

This tagline represents their action in giving donation with shoebox. This shoebox could possibly contain a lot of stuffs, such as shower tools, stationary, medicines, basic foods, etc This is a low budget project. You can generate this project with 50-100 thousands rupiahs

The target of this project is orphanage, house for children on the street, nursing home, nursing home for kids with disabilities

Educational Movement : Berbudaya itu

This program is initiated by Tasa, Della, Adit, Arum, Ori, Vera, Ferisya, Haya, Arafani, Vera, and Noor.

As an alternative program, Berburu is presented with interesting concept. Little detective, that the students called, they learn positive culture using various methods, such as discussion, simulation, games, songs, and project.

Five values that they believe in this program are follow the rule, respect your own and the others, love the environment, reading is interesting, and love Indonesia’s culture.

From those examples, we can see that youth always want to be the agent of change. They love this country so they will do everything to make this country better than yesterdayInfluencing the circumstances is also their marvelIts still amazing to imagine how youngsters’ power could lead and influence a lot of people
