ThERE IS NO bETTER way to increase your understanding of how the various pieces of structural steel systems work together than to see it for yourself. And this year’s SteelDay, scheduled for Friday, Septem-ber 23, provides numerous opportunities to do that.

“SteelDay exposes people in the design part of the industry to the creation and preparation of the materials used in construction,” said Donnell Duncan of Hazen & Sawyer PC, Atlanta. Last year Duncan attended the 2010 Atlanta multi-part tour, transported by chartered bus to see steel production, fabrication and galvanizing operations.

C2HM Hill’s Keith Coleman, who also was on the Atlanta tour, said “This was a great opportunity for young engineers, such as myself, to learn more about steel—how it’s manufactured, specified and used.”

So where can you go and what can you see? If you’re within driving distance of Columbia City, Ind. (near Fort Wayne), SteelDay offers a chance to see how structural shapes are born. Structural Dynamics Inc. is offering “Breakfast at the Mill” followed by a tour of its facility where they produce structural shapes and rails. And just down the road, steel distributor Triad Metals is hosting an open house and shop tour.

George Papadopoulos, an engineer with Commonwealth Edison, Oakbrook, Ill., attended last year's facility tour at the Independence Tube Corporation in Marseilles, Ill. "SteelDay provided one of the best tours that I have ever attended," Papadopoulos said. "I am an engineer with 30 years experience, but never knew how steel tubes were made until I attended a tour.”

How about a job site visit? General contractor Balfour Beatty/Wal-ton Construction Joint Venture is hosting a site tour of the new Irwin Army Hospital now under construction in Ft. Riley, Kan., which was featured in the July 2011 issue of MSC. You can register for this and other events at www.steelday.org.
