Villa Valmarana ai Nani holds since 1757 one of the most famous series of frescoes painted by the Tiepolos - father and son. Originally, the villa was a farmhouse belonging to the family of Gian Maria Bertolo, who was a legal adviser, but also a law expert, a diplomat, and a book-lover. Right before his death, he decided to leave his complete collection of books as a precious legacy to the city of Vicenza.In the 1720’s, the villa was purchased by the Valmaranas, a noble family, native from Vicenza, whose traces were found before the year 1000 on the Colli Berici (the Berici hills). Indeed, the Villa Valmarana offered the possibility to enjoy a cooler stay during the warm summer months.In the 1730’s, the farmhouse was embellished by the architect Muttoni who was responsible for the construction of a stable, the terraces, the staircases, and a little tower. Meanwhile, the two Tiepolos who had just completed their masterpiece in Würzburg, Germany, undertook the decoration of the insides by frescoing the walls and the ceilings in the year 1757. The Villa still belongs today to the Valmaranas and is composed of the the Owners’ residence, of the Guesthouse, of the Stable and of the gardens , directly facing the enchanting and almost untouched “Valley of the Silence”, described so many times in the works of the writers Fogazzaro and Piovene.

Villa Valmarana ai Nani custodisce dal 1757 uno dei più celebri cicli di affreschi dei Tiepolo, padre e figlio. Originariamente era una casa colonica appartenente alla famiglia del giureconsulto Gian Maria Bertolo, esperto di legge, diplomatico e bibliofilo che, prima di morire, legherà i suoi preziosi volumi alla città di Vicenza. Nel 1720 venne acquistata dai Valmarana, una nobile famiglia vicentina che affonda le radici a prima dell’anno 1000, per la sua posizione sui Colli Berici, la quale consentiva un fresco soggiorno nei mesi più caldi. Attorno alla metà degli anni trenta del 18° secolo la casa colonica verrà impreziosita da Muttoni con una scuderia, terrazze, scalinate, statue e una torretta, mentre Giambattista e Giandomenico Tiepolo, da poco reduci dall’impresa di Würzburg, affrescheranno le pareti e i soffitti degli interni nel 1757. La Villa appartiene ancora oggi ai Valmarana e comprende la Palazzina, la Foresteria, la Scuderia e i giardini che si affacciano tutti sull’incantevole e quasi intatta “Valletta del Silenzio”, tante volte descritta dagli scrittori Fogazzaro e Piovene.

LA VILLA THE VILLA

Articolata in tre edifici, Palazzina, Foresteria e Scuderia, e circondata da un grande parco, la Villa si trova a 15 minuti a piedi dal centro di Vicenza e deve il suo nome a 17 statue di nani, poste sul muro di cinta che circonda la proprietà.

The Villa owes its name to the 17 statues of dwarfs located at the top of the outer wall, which surrounds the property. It is composed of three buildings: the Palazzina, the Foresteria and the Scuderia, and is surrounded by a beautiful large park. The Villa Valmarana is located only 15 minutes away from the town centre on foot.

GLI AFFRESCHITHE FRESCOES

Palazzina e Foresteria sono affrescate da Giambattista Tiepolo e dal figlio Giandomenico. Giambattista affresca la Palazzina con i temi delle opere più amate dal suo committente, Giustino Valmarana: Iliade, Eneide, Orlando Furioso, Gerusalemme Liberata e Ifigenia in Aulide. Il figlio, nella Foresteria, ritrae paesaggi e personaggi di metà Settecento.

The walls of the Palazzina and of the Foresteria are the work of Gianbattista Tiepolo and of his son Giandomenico. On the one hand, in the Palazzina, Gianbattista depicts several themes inspired by the favourite poems of the commissioner, Giustino Valmarana: the Iliad, the Eneid, the Furious Orland, the Jerusalem delivered and Iphigenia in Aulis. On the other hand, his son, in the Foresteria draws contemporary landscapes and characters representative of the 18th century Vicentina society.

I GIARDINITHE GARDENS

Il giardino di rose in ingresso diventa, sul versante ovest della collina, un giardino all’italiana con siepi di bosso e architetture scenografiche e circonda la Palazzina per poi aprirsi in un lungo viale limitato ai lati da due tunnel verdi, le carpinate.

The garden of roses at the entrance becomes, on the west slope of the hill, an Italian garden made of edges (siepi di bosso) mingled with a scenography of architectures. It first surrounds the Palazzina before opening onto a long path limited by two green tunnels on each side, called the carpinate.
