Pioneer’s “Giving Culture” Celebrated

Pioneer Energy LP received the “Outstanding Corporation” award at the National Philanthropy Day celebrations held at the Burlington Convention Centre on November 16th, 2011. “Pioneer has a long history of philanthropy that is embedded in the company’s DNA,” said Sheree Meredith, Vice-President of Philanthropic Services at Hamilton Community Foundation (HCF). Ms.

Meredith nominated Pioneer Energy for the award, which is given out annually by the Association of Fundraising Professionals, Golden Horseshoe Chapter.

“Giving is part of the Pioneer corporate culture,” continued Ms. Meredith. “Their philanthropic impact has been felt at the local, national and international levels, and their giving takes many forms: financial, volunteer time and they act as catalysts for others, such as your customers, to give.”

“From Pioneer’s early days, Murray Hogarth (Founder and Chairman of Pioneer Energy) demonstrated a strong philosophy of giving back to the communities we serve,” said Tim Hogarth, President and CEO of Pioneer Energy LP. “The old saying…‘Invest in the community and the community shall invest in you’ is very true! All of us at Pioneer -- our management, retailers and staff -- have long recognized that it takes strong communities to build strong businesses and that we have a responsibility to ensure we give back and support the communities that have supported us” says Tim. “In doing so, we are more engaged and enlightened on the social responsibility issues impacting the communities where we do business and frankly that makes good business sense!”

Murray Hogarth was honoured at the Chapter’s inaugural National Philanthropy Day event in 2007.

Pioneer Energy Foundation & Pioneer Energy Fund

In 1999 the Pioneer Energy

Foundation was established at Hamilton Community Foundation as an innovative way to mark the new millennium. Since then the Pioneer Energy Foundation has given more than 250 grants totaling more than $2.5 million. These funds have been distributed to more than 75 organizations across many communities, including those where Pioneer does business. In addition, Pioneer has directed over $650,000 to the Pioneer Energy Fund within HCF’s Community Fund, which issues grants to address Hamilton’s greatest needs.

Tori Allen joined Pioneer on October 4, 2011 as Loyalty Manager. Tori is a former Account Supervisor at Carlson Marketing, a leader in loyalty marketing. Prior to that, Tori worked with

retailers West 49 and HBC managing loyalty marketing and gift card programs.

Robin Binns joined Pioneer on October 11, 2011 as the company’s new Accounting Manager. Robin, a Chartered Accountant, comes to us from KPMG where she has seven

years experience as an auditor.

Aamer Mirza joined the Pioneer team on October 11, 2011 as Programmer Analyst/Developer. Aamer has more than 10 years of IT experience and has been involved in building

custom software for the healthcare industry for most of his career. Aamer is versed in all stages of application development.

Jim Cook formerly of Bradshaw Fuels joins Pioneer as a district manager. Jim started his career working for Texaco. Years later, as an employee of Imperial Oil, Jim was instrumental

in bringing the Retail Branded Distributor program to Canada. He will continue to manage the Esso-branded sites in the Chatham, Windsor and Sarnia triangle on behalf of Pioneer.

Todd Hickman a territory manager with Bradshaw Fuels for the past seven years, joins Pioneer as a district manager. Todd will continue to manage the Esso RBD accounts

that were previously held by Bradshaw Fuels. Prior to joining the retail petroleum industry, Todd travelled the world selling playground equipment. The career change left Todd with a much more manageable territory; from his base in Brantford he manages sites in Niagara Falls, north to Owen Sound and west to Goderich.

THE RETAIL COMMUNITY OF

Recent Campaign SuccessesOn these pages we celebrate the work of our fine employees and generous customers for jumping to the cause whenever asked. By working together, we’ve contributed to the success of these campaigns and many others over the years. The Philanthropy award belongs to us all!

Triple the Impact for East Africa Famine ReliefOn August 15th, Pioneer launched the Pioneer East Africa Famine Relief campaign and offered to match the first $25,000 raised in customer donations. Together, with matching funds from the Canadian Government, Pioneer Energy, our employees and customers raised $75,000 to help those suffering in the Horn of Africa.

“The images coming out of east Africa were stark, and the suffering unimaginable,” said Geoff Hogarth, Pioneer’s Director of Marketing. “We knew that Pioneer Energy had to act and that our employees and customers would want to help as well.”

The funds donated by customers and matched by Pioneer were forwarded to the Canadian Red Cross. The customer portion was then matched by the Canadian Government. This means that every one of our customers who donated to the Pioneer East Africa Famine Relief campaign had their impact tripled and three times more money was raised for urgent relief work in the Horn of Africa.

Honouring our Fallen SoldiersPioneer sites throughout the Quinte region held Operation Monument campaign from August 15 to September 11, 2011. Operation Monument was a very special campaign to help build a permanent memorial– The Afghanistan Repatriation Monument – to honour the 158 Canadian soldiers who gave their lives in the Afghanistan conflict.

The monument will be located in a park on the Bay of Quinte, alongside the Canadian Forces Base Trenton and not far from where the repatriation services took place. The total cost is $1.5 million, and help is needed to raise it. The monument is solely funded by Canadians who wish to honour the men and women of the Canadian forces who gave their lives in Afghanistan. It is not a government initiative.

During the four week campaign Operation Monument collected $6,131.52 from customers at the 10 area sites. “Pioneer Energy is pleased to announce that we will not only match the $6,131.52 in customer donations but will top up the total funds raised and give full matching funds, for a total of $20,000,” said Tim Hogarth, President and CEO of Pioneer Energy. As Honorary Lieutenant-Colonel of the Royal Hamilton Light Infantry and a Member of Canada Company, Tim also serves as an advocate and link between the community and the Canadian Forces.

To learn more about the Afghanistan Repatriation Monument or to get involved in honouring Canada’s repatriated Afghanistan soldiers please visit afghanistanmemorial.ca.

Brady Benefits/Pioneer Golf Classic Tournament for YMCA Strong Kids

The 10th Anniversary Brady Benefits/Pioneer Golf Classic Tournament netted $130,000 for the YMCA Strong Kids campaign. Strong Kids is an annual campaign that raises financial support for children, youth and families who are unable to afford the full cost of YMCA programs. The event, held on September 13th, 2011 at Carlisle Golf & Country Club, was capped with an evening performance of Phantom of the Opera’s Music of the Night by Canadian Tenor Michael Burgess.

“Pioneer has been exemplary in its support of children and youth in our programs across the region for many years,” said Jim Commerford, President & CEO, YMCA of Hamilton/Burlington/Brantford. More than 1,000 children will be able to participate in YMCA programs as a result of the proceeds of this tournament this year.

Since 1991 the tournament has raised $590,000, which has given almost 4,000 children a positive YMCA experience that they otherwise would not have.Top Photo: Susanne Alexandor and Eileen Green enjoyed an afternoon of golf with Canadian tenor Michael Burgess and Canadian Football Hall of Fame member Russ Jackson. Winnipeg United Way Day of CaringUnited Way of Winnipeg received some great support from Pioneer Energy’s Winnipeg Esso sites on Friday August 26th, 2011. Recently upgraded On the Run sites at 777 Keewatin Street, 1640 Kenaston Boulevard and 1693 King Edward Street,

hosted “grand opening” events with a special One Cent a Litre promotion for United Way. All seven Esso On the Run sites in Winnipeg hosted customer appreciation barbecues and accepted donations to United Way of Winnipeg’s Day of Caring.

Pioneer Energy/Esso donated $4,500 as a result of the special One Cent a Litre promotion and customers contributed another $1,310.50 during the free barbecues. At the end of the day United Way of Winnipeg received a cheque for $5,810.50.

“Thanks again to all of you and your staff, for your efforts in making this event a success,” said Melissa Campbell, Day of Caring Manager for United Way of Winnipeg. “And, thank you to Esso and Pioneer Energy for their ongoing support of United Way.” Retailer Joanne McKenzie, (left) sets up for a Day of Caring event with United Way volunteers at Site 288, King Edward Esso.

THE RETAIL COMMUNITY OF

Pioneer’s UFC 137 - Powered By XYIENCE® ContestPioneer’s Powered by XYIENCE® Contest was another opportunity to win a great prize – but only for registered Bonus Bucks members. The Grand Prize of tickets to UFC 137, return airfare for two from Toronto to Las Vegas, Nevada: and two hotel nights worth $5,000 was won by Rick Dolishny from Peterborough. Again, entry was simple – registered Bonus Bucks members merely had to swipe their Bonus Bucks card with the purchase of 2 XYIENCE energy drinks (473 ml) at a participating Pioneer.

More loyalty-linked promotions are planned for the future. We definitely want customers spreading the word about the perks of being a Bonus Bucks member, but ultimately it is up to us. Make your customers aware of the benefits of becoming a Bonus Bucks member and remind them to register their card so they don’t miss opportunities to win great prizes like these. Spread the word!

Jail and Bail in HanoverLocal police “arrested” retailer Rick Barrie on August 25th, 2011 at site 241 in Hanover, all for a good cause of course! Rick “indicted” on the charge of previous fundraising success, was recruited to help out Habitat for Humanity of Grey Bruce. Loyal staff tried to break Rick out of the slammer by smuggling him a file hidden in a ...cupcake. When the cupcake was confiscated, it took the help of amused local business owners to raise “bail.” Together they raised a few eyebrows and $550 for Habitat for Humanity!

Pioneer and ESKA Water Contest

Trip to Paris Winner becomes “Instant ambassador”

It’s worth it to sign up for Bonus Bucks membership – just ask Angela Pierini from Whitby! Angela is the winner of the Pioneer and ESKA Water Trip to Paris contest.

“Thank you so much!,” exclaimed Angela upon learning of her win on September 29th, 2011. “I am so excited now to have won the trip and my daughter and I will have a wonderful time together. It’s a once in a lifetime adventure. I can hardly believe my luck and I cannot thank you enough!”

“Reactions like this by our Bonus Bucks members are priceless,” says Anthony Di Maulo, Director of Merchandising and Loyalty. “They become instant ambassadors for Pioneer and communicate verbally or by social media about how great Pioneer is to Bonus Bucks members.”

The momentum surrounding Bonus Bucks membership has been terrific, starting with PayDay Swipe and Win, through to our most recent contest, Win a Trip to see UFC 137 - Powered By XYIENCE®.

“Pioneer is the best gas station around, with the best service and always the most competitive price for gas.”

Springville’s John Scott Lands Big Compliment at Pioneer-sponsored Fishing EventPioneer sponsored the Rice Lake Fishing Festival from May 14th to June 19th, 2011, which offered nearly $70,000 in prizes for four species of tagged fish. Tag #1 - the Grand Prize – was a $10,000 Fuel Gift from Pioneer. While no one caught the tagged fish for the grand prize, Pioneer employee John Scott from site 202 in Springville landed a big compliment from event organizers.

John volunteered at the Kids Free Fishing Days that are part of the Rice Lake Fishing Festival. “If John saw a child who wasn’t catching anything he’d get a professional angler to help out,” explains Michael Brown, the event’s organizer. “He wouldn’t let any kid leave without catching a fish. I have no doubt that a lot of the parents who were there would recognize John and associate him with the Pioneer station. He was an excellent representative of Pioneer. He came early, stayed late, and made the days more enjoyable for the children.” Congratulations John and thank you for representing Pioneer so well!

“So Long” Dan EdwardsDan Edwards, Pioneer’s dedicated Warehouse Manager for the past 22 years, retired on November 30, 2011. Dan started with Pioneer 27 years ago as assistant manager at Site 45 in Stoney Creek before moving to the warehouse three years later.

What will he do with his new found time? “I’m practicing twiddling my thumbs in both directions,” he laughingly replied before leaving. In truth Dan will enjoy more time reading, walking and spending time with Beth, his wife of 41 years.

Congratulations to Dan on his retirement and to Brian Bertolo, upon his promotion to Warehouse Manager.
