Our programme of plays really gives a sense of what we’reall about. We've always been inspired by three periodsof theatre history. The Greeks, the Elizabethans and late19th century Europe. We are starting the Season withthree great plays from each of these periods which areprofound explorations of the human condition.

We've always been proud of our North Western roots andwe have a classic Manchester School play for the festiveperiod. We are also a new writing theatre and by theend of this Season, we will have produced 137 premieres. To start 2011 we're delighted and excited to present twoof the prize-winning plays from our recent BruntwoodPlaywriting Competition. Both are first plays by new, original voices (one North Western) with something tosay and a real theatrical talent for saying it.

As well as our Season of plays our building is a hive ofactivity with many different and diverse events foryour interest and pleasure.

We thank you for your support and look forward tosharing this work with you.

Doctor Faustus

Box Office 0161 833 9833 ~ Website royalexchange.co.uk 04 ~ 05

Directed by Toby FrowDesigned by Ben Stones

When Doctor Faustus’ desire for power and knowledgeleads him to conjure up the demon Mephistopheles, he finds himself offered the ultimate bargain: he willbe granted everything he desires for 24 years, but at the end of that time will have to hand his soul over tothe devil. So begins a hedonistic journey in time andspace as Faustus turns the world into his playground. But wherever he goes and the clock ticks down to hisfinal damnation, he is followed by the shadow of his infernal bargain in Christopher Marlowe's STUNNINGand SAVAGE tragedy.

Did you know? It is often claimed that there are only really seven storiesin the world. DOCTOR FAUSTUS, and the story of the debtthat must be repaid, is one of these archetypes.

Think...MACBETH meets HIS DARK MATERIALS.

“I do repent; and yet I do despair;Hell strives with grace within my breast:What shall I do to shun the snares of death?”
