Words from the President Every year I get fascinated by the amount of work put in to organise INSTINCTS,the intercollegiate cultural fest of SSN. The tenth edition of the fest is here and I am sure that the spirits will be high this time as well. Instincts is the fruit of sustained effort and hard work that the Instincts team has been putting in each year to make the event a huge success. I am sure the theme “Space” will ignite creative minds. I am confident that the whole team will benefit greatly in organising a mega event of this caliber and students from different departments will learn to work together as one team.

SSN aims to be a centre of excellence in all areas – education, sports and extracurricular activities because we are committed to the all-round development of each and every student in our institution. Instincts 2k15 will draw out talent and provide the perfect stage for unleashing hidden potential. I am very proud of how Instincts has turned out to be increasingly successful every year and congratulate everyone who is involved in the planning and organising of this wonderful event.

I have immense faith in the potential of SSNites in making Instincts 2k15 a grand success.

Letter from the Principal I am extremely happy that the students and staff of the SSN institutions have taken ceaseless efforts in organising “INSTINCTS 2k15”, the intercollegiate cultural festival. I congratulate all the students of their initiative and success.

Our excellence in the academic scenario is well known nationwide and we have been ranked number one among the 540 engineering colleges affiliated to Anna University. The infrastructure, strength and commitment of faculty, support the students in mastering their discipline and applying their knowledge in various situations, thus contributing to the welfare of the society and nation at large.

I appreciate the continual effort of students and staff to bring out the magazine, “PINNACLE” and make this event holistic. I take pleasure in thanking the Heads of all departments for the motivation and support that they have extended for the successful conduct of “INSTINCTS 2k15”.

From Dean’s Desk SSN college has been conducting ‘INSTINCTS’ as an annual event, to appreciate the nuances of Art in what ever form it is, be it dance, music, debate, painting etc. you name it and it is there. More than that, it infuses the art of agreeing with the disagreed, for the betterment of the society at large and more specifically the grand function on hand. At the present age, to coexist with people begging to differ, is the most important thing and if one imbibes it, he has all the credentials for a safe sail. The whole aim of education is to refine the human being, by widening his knowledge and using it for the benefit of mankind, by inculcating compassion to all living beings, ability to emulate and appreciate nature and to create an esteem for ‘Art for Art’s Sake’, I am not sure, if our present education system is doing it. The way in which our society behaves portrays it quite contrarily. But these aberrations must not sway away the student community. SSN lends support to show case the subtlety of the histrionic talents of students of a variety of institutions around Chennai. Having mastered this art of conducting such a mega event, I have little doubt that this year’s INSTINCT will be yet another feather in SSN’s cap. I wish the function a grand success!

The Faculty Convenor INSTINCTS will always be among the fond memories of every student who graduates from SSN. With three days packed with absolute fun and lots of creativity, the fest has evolved a lot since its inception. Being the faculty convener of INSTINCTS, I know that organization of INSTINCTS involves great commitment, teamwork, coordination and above all, hard work to make it a success in all aspects of the program.

The experience gained by the students on these grounds will help them learn a lot about leadership, building soft skills and inherent abilities. It is a fact that with every passing year, the quality of the fest is also on the rise, and I am really proud of my students who make this possible. I expect the same involvement and participation from every student in making INSTINCTS-2015, which scheduled to be held on   12th, 13th and 14th of March 2015,  also a very successful event. With space as the theme this year, the event is going to be more exciting and colorful.

I wish both the organizers and the participants all the very best.

Dr. Sunitha Nair,Advisor Student Affairs, SSN Institutions.

Convenor Talk... If there is one event that unites the entire college, then it’s definitely INSTINCTS. It’s the result of hard work put in by a team comprising of more than 100 dedicated students who strive to establish Instincts as a valued cultural brand. The past two months were probably the best days of our college lives. Organising Instincts gave us an opportunity to hone our leadership skills, rational thinking and decision making capability. With a plethora of events lined up for all the three days we are sure that we will set a benchmark.

Instincts version 10 has imposed an additional responsibility of keeping up a decade of hard-work that has gone into making Instincts a sought after brand today. Instincts is not just a cultural event but a connection established among people of varied interests who have come together to work in unison. It gives individuals freedom to explore their passion, abilities and manage finance, people, events, etc. This hence brings an overall development of skills and personality. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the SSN Management, our President, Principal, Dean and Sunita Ma’am for entrusting us with an event such as this one. I also extend my gratitude to all the sponsors and partners who believed in our potential to pull this show up. I hence confidently believe that INSTINCTS this year will sore to great heights and serve as a milestone for the forthcoming editions.

Adithyan Karunakaran,Student Convenor

Content Development Board The Content Development Board is one of the prime committees of Instincts that makes sure all publicity through ink reaches the various cadres of society. Our support to the core committee of Instincts involves dexterous promotion through social networking and blogging, penning down articles, drafting official letters and writing invitations. Working with the Content Development Board has been a memorable experience for all of us that we will carry over for the rest of our lives. Right from, writing, blogging, shooting VideoLOGS and publicising, it has been an incredible month. Our task involved working hand in hand with all the other clubs, gaining access to information on the celebrities presiding over the various events, ProShow performers, stage and decoration details, sponsorship specifics and events organised by the other clubs so that all publicity, write ups and blogging regarding the same reached the public well on time. We had a fascinating time working as a team and each one has put in fullest efforts to make the content work for this year’s Instincts a success. The tenth edition of PINNACLE is an outcome of peaks of creativity, passion to stupefy the readers through ink and unrelenting conceptualisation. This year’s theme “SPACE” has opened its doors to endless possibilities and innovations. With no limits set, we the Content Development Board, bring to you just the right amount in every aspect. We take utmost elation in presenting to you, PINNACLE V10.0. We believe you will have an amazing time reading this, just as we all did writing it.

It is not often that God bestows us engineers with chunks of entertainment, not something that superficially amuses us, but those which cleanse our souls and fill us with energy to keep us alive for the rest of the year. Our promises for instincts every year never go in vain, because we get our standards bigger and better over the years. With instincts version 10 in execution, it is our responsibility to give a glimpse of Instincts 2k14 to all.

With groups of students, working over sleepless nights, the only thought running through all of our heads, was to make INSTINCTS 2014 a grand success. A myriad of emotions ran through our souls, excitement, fear, expectations, and many more yet to be defined. The students worked with enthusiasm never see before, running though the city, hunting for sponsors, through the college, working on hospitality, decoration, website, posters, banners, flash mobs, dance performances and so much more.

The first day of instincts, had the inaugural function which was presided by the famous actor, Ajmal who helped us begin the huge roller coaster ride which was to extend through the next three days, with a phenomenal opening. The

no-more-space-to-stand auditorium overwhelmed us with happiness, and filling us with hopes that Instincts this year was going to be much better than the previous years. It was a

real sight to watch hundreds of people gathered together at the main stage during twilight, hooting and waiting for the PRO SHOW to begin. Singers Ranjith, Shakthishree Gopalan, Alaap Raju, and guitarists Keith Peters and Joseph Vijay honoured the event with their presence making the audience sway to their rhythms. The second day faced a huge opening with the most awaited, short film contest, Reels of fire which was presided over by directors Dharani, Prabhu Solomon, Thedigi P.Ramesh, Suseendhiran and editor John Leo Paul. Over 100 short films contested out of which ten best films were screened and competed for the title. It was a pleasant surprise that Reels of fire witnessed more crowd than any of the previous years and grabbed the most sought after event title. Later the same evening, the entire crowd roared together for the vogue show and the DJ night.

The third day filled the auditorium with peels of laughter as the audience witnessed the variety show conducted by the eminent comedian Robot Shankar and “Daddy enakku oru doubt” fame Senthil and Saravanan. The evening witnessed the

Choreo night during which the stage served as a battlefield for participants from various colleges in and around Tamil Nadu to showcase their dance performances and ignite

9

sparks of fire. All these main events were well complimented by the events in Gaming, Fine Arts and English literature. The workshops were excellent learning curves to those who participated and the INFORMALS had their own participants and audience, fascinating all the passers-by.

As Instincts came to an end last year, all of us watched the crowd go back, congratulating us on our performance, leaving us with content hearts of having achieved our target. The never ending applause over the three days from the students of different colleges filled us with life giving us the fruit of all the hard work that went into making of the Instincts. Overall, Instincts filled us with adrenaline, made us forget our regular routine, took the sorrow out of us and filled us with happiness instead.

The Theory of Everything“We are just an advanced breed of monkeys on a minor planet of a very average star. But we can understand the Universe. That makes us something very special.” – Stephen Hawking.

As I sat and brainstormed for a few minutes before writing this article, I quickly jotted down the following that struck me – Ben 10, planets , aliens, comets, interstellar, star wars, gravity, entropy, satellites, Big bang, time –one word connecting this messy play of words(surely universe’s entropy is increasing) – SPACE.

The beauty lies in the fact that never will a plethora of words suffice to describe space. Physics would call it a three dimensional expanse without boundaries or it could simply mean the region surrounding you that is unoccupied. Yet, space continues to be as mysterious and intriguing as anything ever because of the unlimited possibilities associated with it.

The soothing darkness of the pitch black sky filled with burning stars, the light-reflecting spectacular moon and the brightness of the intense sun would be some of the most common yet rarely appreciated things.

This time at Instincts 2k15, we look forward to unraveling a lot of mystery about space with a variety of events planned ahead!

Who knows, maybe some day we’ll find an Omnitrix or the Gargantua or the cap of invisibility or Gort or Pandora!!

Space. The expanse of infinity that we try to define with myriads of calculations. The stuff of dreams and movies, the essence of

imagination. Space. The heavenly abode of stars, planets, cosmic objects, aliens and who knows what else. The nothing which

contains everything. Where everything started, everything exists and where everything will end. The eternal void where we project

our hopes, achievements and sufferings.

*philosophical rant ends*

And with that I take great pleasure in welcoming you to Instincts 2k15 (Yes you readers), where this year’s theme is- surprise,

From the grads... It is that time of the year when SSN redefines itself. It is when people step up and prove themselves. Very glad to see that INSTINCTS is back, with astounding evolution. Given the pleasure of looking back at my time as part of INSTINCTS, it is one of those things which I would always treasure to do. It all starts three months before, when everyone gets the feel of “Something big” that is going to happen. Though we would not be sure how things were going to unravel, the urge to make it happen gets us together with enthusiasm. People start to move around and meet each other more and talk about stuff. All of a sudden the atmosphere seems different. There is energy, involvement and most of all the drive. They become more confident, more responsible. This is one phase change that every single person involved with INSTINCTS undergoes and I feel that this period brings about a significant change in our perspective on things. Special credits should also go to Mrs. Sunitha Nair, for her calm demeanour in marshalling and getting the best out of us. Not one in the INSTINCTS team would disagree that nothing other than hardwork or those extra hours of pushing ourselves further, made us achieve the grand success.I feel extremely pleased to have played a role in the Content Development Board, and thank the team for all the hardwork, fun and the memories which came along. I would also like to quote that - the INSTINCTS experience has helped me stay motivated, whatever be the time-constraint, for it taught me that there is always a way out of things. It has given me the confidence to step into bigger communities, accept challenges readily, thereby enhancing my social reach and reputation.INSTINCTS would always be close to my heart, and it is something that I would want to be part of, again and again. Best wishes to the team for yet another impressive spectacle ...

A Walk to RememberDisclaimer: This is not a tragic story though there were some parts that genuinely moved yours truly to tears Instincts 2k13. I was the co-head of the Content Development Board (CDB) at our legendary culturals. It was always clear to me that I should be in charge of the magazine, “Pinnacle” to which I had consistently given articles though I daresay read by a single-digit number of people. Though reading may fast be dying out, it was my special moment to take on the mantle of leading the CDB.Little did I know what I had signed up for. Amidst initial allegations of me being partial to juniors who had already been in CDB and other unsavoury starts, I really got along with the core team. Not to mention my classmates were totally in support of me, even claimed they cannot work without me to assure that I’m taken seriously. Then came the kick-off. Many people felt that the CDB didn’t quite need to speak because they didn’t need volunteers. How very wrong that was is something I learnt later. Anyway, my friends once again backed me up, and asked me to say what I wanted to. Well, I started off by asking what the CDB stood for, what the name of the magazine was, how I desperately needed people who are interested to write etc. I had spoken so confidently on stage after a very long time and that kick-off was what truly made me feel in charge and gave me the faith that this is what I wanted to do. Initially, I was very surprised to find out what all content there was to be developed. I wrote diplomatic letters for the publicity team, I wrote speeches, I wrote articles, I wrote content for the website, I wrote so many things except devoting attention to the magazine. Somehow, somewhere I lost track of the blog after some paltry 2 posts. In fact I remember when the 7th semester results came out and I was desperately trying to see it on my mobile, I got a call at 2 pm to write 3 sentences about some singer for the website. Also, I had only 2 juniors to help me who were in second year at the time and did not have the whole day free as I did. I stayed a couple of nights at hostel and I must mention, how amazing Navin Kishore from Chemical department was. He was giving me so many ideas to help me along the way. Another mistake I made was I thought this would be as simple as my department magazine. It was not! I forgot about the advertisements. Ads kept coming in at random intervals, one even came the night before printing! Then,

14

you had to keep track the full page-ads were not together. I had wicked fun with the articles, especially one that was so beautiful that I couldn’t believe it to be true. And I was right, it was lifted right from Google’s blog. That satisfaction of nosing that out made me feel like I debugged a segmentation fault (forgive me non-CS students!) I also had a lot of help with editing and cover design from Srinath and Vigneshwar. Then, the ugly spectre of accidental delete reared its head. Somewhere in the crazed final compilations, the entire magazine was erased from my pendrive. After recovering thanks to Vigneshwar, I was mailing nearly 18MB back and forth to myself. Why I didn’t use Dropbox or Google Drive is an absolute mystery to me. Then, almost 3 days before Instincts I again lost the magazine. This time I cried. It was just a tear or two, but the pressure was getting to me. When Sunitha Nair madam asked me when it will be ready, I had no idea what answer to give because I didn’t know. I was completely blank. I recovered it somehow and then realized there were a million formatting errors. I had finished the magazine the morning before Instincts and it was printed that evening. Even before printing, the person in charge of publishing had some issues with the headers and footers. Nevertheless, it was done. The next day, when I presented the magazine to the celebrity and I saw the whole crowd cheering, I felt jubilant. I knew the cheers were for Jayam Ravi, I knew people were sniggering that I’m standing too long for a good photo, I knew no one was going to remember this moment in Instincts. But for me, that moment was worth everything, to hold that shiny black magazine with all its undecidedness whether it should be A4 or Letter, was a deep sense of fulfillment. When I stepped down from CDB, I learned a lot of things, I learned how supportive friends are, I learned how creative one can be under stress, I learned that people thought highly of me, I learned negativity is something I have to deal with, I learned new friends can be the best support at times, I learned how important it is to take backup, I learned how to persevere, I learned how beautiful teamwork is, I learned that necessity is the mother of invention. And Pinnacle version 8 is my baby, that would not have been possible without the entire team. Thank you SSN for giving me such wonderful memories and Instincts 2k13 was definitely a walk to remember!

The Inception of a Change Thanks to the difference of opinion between Anna Hazare and Arvind Kejriwal, who were both very actively involved in the passing of the Lokpal Bill and Kejriwal’s guts for having moved out from his safety shell and for having started the one party that is being celebrated all over the country with no tad of doubt on it. Now the massive comeback doesn’t just talk about the huge electoral support for the AAP but also the faith the people of Delhi have on this newly emerging man. From being called the one who ran away from all his responsibilities he is now the one who gave a party a phenomenal victory tossing out the big heads onto the streets breaking the aura of invincibility. The absolute sweep of over 67 of 70 seats speaks of the support they’ve gained over all sections of the society. While this seems to be the case on an overview their major votes seem to have come from the younger generation and the minorities. While, the Muslims generally vote for the Congress to see the BJP fail, this time they’ve made sure the AAP wins. With tons of promises to keep, the AAP has just stepped into reign. Being fully aware and cognizant of the huge responsibility placed on their shoulders, they have addressed their people saying that they will meet the scary voter expectations very soon. The three important things they should primarily be focusing on includes implementing their manifesto promises, calibrating the party’s expansion and balancing its party members. Banking upon the AAP for the fulfillment of their needs, their preliminary requirement would be to make Delhi a secure city for the women, giving the party a long to-do list on women safety. Kejriwal has also thrown his weight behind a ‘National Womanifesto’, being prepared by an NGO. This seems like pretty much a good start. Fingers crossed for it to turn out a success.

17

Further, speaking of the promises to the younger generation, the highlights include providing loans to young entrepreneurs at low interest rates and the enforcement of an education loan guarantee scheme.

Millions of hearts here are looking out for a change. A desperately required, much expected change, which is evident from the love, the Delhi population have given for the party, which has translated into this massive mandate. Sanguinely, the people are not let down by the regime like every other government full of fake promises has. Positively, the expectations of the common man are not burnt to ashes once more. The frustration and disappointment faced by the public over their previous choices needs no mention. The community has openly expressed its regret for having chosen the wrong people. With the hope that history doesn’t repeat itself, let’s join hands, cooperate and move on to make a better India!

Innovation keysHow does a company like Google continue to grow exponentially while still staying innovative?

If you always think the way you’ve always thought, you will always get what you’ve always got.

Now read the following paragraph :

“Aoccdrnig to rscheearch at Cmabridge Uinvervtisy, it deosn’t mttaer in waht oredr the litteers in a wrod are, the olny iprmoetnt tihng is taht the frist and lsat ltteer be at the rghit pclae. The rset can be a ttoal mses and you can sitll raed it wouthit a porbelm. Tihs is besauae ocne we laren how to raed we bgien to aargnre the lteerts in our mnid to see waht we epxcet to see. The huamn mnid deos not raed ervey lteter by istlef, but preecsievs the wrod as a wlohe. We do tihs ucnsoniuscoly wuithot tuhoght.”

Amazing isn’t it?The dominant factor in the way our minds work is the buildup of patterns that enable us to simplify and cope with a complex world. These patterns are based on our past experiences in life, education, and work that have been successful in the past.

In our paragraph, our word patterns are so hard wired that even a small bit of information (the first and last letter of a word) activates the entire word pattern. Read the following sentence.

After reading thethe sentence you arenow aware that the the human brain often does not inform you that thethe word ‘the’ has been repeated twice every time.

We end up seeing what our brains expect to see instead of what is

19

right before our eyes.

Think of our mind as a jelly dish which has settled so that its surface is perfectly flat. Now the information we feed to our mind is hot water we feed to the jelly.

Creativity occurs when we tilt the jelly dish and force the water (information) to flow into new channels and make new connections.

While you may be doing fine without innovation right now, at best you’re in a holding pattern. Someday, a more innovative player will knock you down a peg.. And possibly out of the game altogether.

Don’t let them! Get out there and innovate like crazy

The most beautiful Smile ever... The most beautiful smile ever … is, well, every smile ever smiled. Smiles are much, much more than a mere contortion of facial muscles. They can be misleading, or provocative, or cathartic, or even titillating – indeed, smiles can convey and evoke a gamut of emotions.

There are thus many different kinds of smiles, and yet, they are all equally beautiful, for beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder. You have the vapid smile of a beauty pageant contestant, as empty and bereft of purpose or conviction as the people judging her supposed beauty. Then there is the relieved, wan smile of an Anna University student when he finishes writing a meaningless farce of an exam, or of a bomb squad veteran who manages to save thousands of lives with a second left on the timer. There is also the wry smile of the same Anna University student when he finds out his GPA, or of a woman whose boyfriend is an hour late for their date. A smile of pride is equally beautiful, especially on the face of a cricketer who looks up to the heavens on scoring his maiden century. The sad smile of a successful old man who finds out he has cancer and naught but a month more of life is undeniably tragic, yet strangely beautiful in its own way. One must not forget a simple smile of joy, either, be it on the face of a millionaire who has signed a new contract or a slum child dancing in the rain without a care in the world. And there are also smiles that can express multiple other emotions at the same time …

Whatever be its purpose (or lack thereof), a smile adds charm to one’s mien. A smiling person always stands out in a crowd, for he exudes confidence. Smiling also makes you happy, helping you face the vagaries of fate with your chin up; it improves your mood, no matter how deep in the dumps you may be. And yet, this is one simple fact that often goes unnoticed, for we humans as a species seem to have forgotten how to smile. We go about our tasks with hearts, minds, and faces seemingly made of stone, stone as grey as what our world has become.

There may be no such thing as the most beautiful smile ever, but a smile is still definitely one of the most beautiful things in our world. It is time we took cognizance of that fact and started to smile more. If this ‘essay’ (if you may call it one) made you – yes, you, my dear reader – smile at least once, whether it be out of exasperation or amusement, then I feel it would have satisfied its purpose.

As we are very well aware, our world, the Earth is so pretty huge and is so full of secrets that there is so much more to it than meets the eye. There are plenty of mysteries in pretty much every corner we go and for the most of it, they are near impossible to solve. Ones like the Bermuda Triangle and the Lochness monster are just a fraction of the colossal pool of obscurities that surround us, like the portion of an iceberg jutting out of the water surface.

One such less known ambiguity is the mystery of the great Mt. Kailash . Geographically, it is situated in the Himalayas, one of the most beautiful places on Earth and towers up to around a massive 6500 metres high. It’s also considered to be one of the most sacred and holiest places by many religions and cultures including Hinduism and Buddhism. Hindus believe that it is the holy abode of Lord Shiva while the Buddhists and other local religions say that it is the centre of the Universe or the ‘axis mundial’ as some would call it. This is all that most people know about this ethnic jewel but there is a lot more to it than we give it credit for!

Mt. Kailash has been a subject of great research and controversy for many years now. The Russians specifically have shown some keen interest in it. What these scientists have to say is incredibly mind-blowing! They say that this mountain is not exactly a mountain at all and that it is infact an enormous pyramid from ancient times forming the centre of hundreds of other interconnected surrounding pyramids forming a kind of complex network. They even have a considerable amount of reasoning to prove their theory. According to them if we study the topography of the mountain, we will find that the mountain has four distinct sides and each side has a near vertical fall at the peak, almost perpendicular, more or less resembling a square pyramid.

The overall shape resembles a huge cathedral. The stratum is horizontal with the layers of stone slightly varying in colour. The

Mount Kailash: The Mystery Behind It

27

dividing lines show up clear and distinct which give the entire mountain a facade of having been built by giant hands, of huge blocks of reddish stone. Experts say that there isabsolutely no way that this mountain could be a complete natural phenomenon and that there had to be some sort of human intervention in it. The next theory gets even more baffling. It’s about ancient aliens. According to Buddhist legends, about thousands of years ago, there existed two very powerful sorcerers in the area who used to have a number of duels every now and then. In one such duel, they had to climb up to the peak of Mount Kailash.

Legend says it that one of them used a ‘magic drum’ to reach the top while the other use the ‘rays of the Sun’. Historians believe that these so called ‘sorcerers’ could have very well been ancient aliens and that the ‘magic drum’ and the ‘rays of the Sun’ could have been advanced ships.

The Buddhists and other local religions believe that this mountain holds the gateway to the secret city of Shambala. Shambala, according to popular belief is said to be a kind of ‘perfect city’ of peace and tranquillity where only perfect people live and a sacred place where many religions originated. Many explorers and believers have ventured in the past in search of this gateway but startlingly, were never heard of again. No one knows whether they really found the city or just got lost in the process.

The other interesting yet cryptic fact about Mt. Kailash is that our ageing process takes place more rapidly . Scientists have solid proof for this phenomenon. The hair and nails of any person who spent more than twelve hours in the mountain evidently grew nearly twice as fast! But they still don’t know the reason behind this.

Mount Kailash remains to be one of those mountains that is yet to be conquered. No one till date has seen the peak of this mountain. It is in fact forbidden to climb to the top. It is considered a taboo in many religions.

28

According to Hindus, for instance, they believe that Lord Shiva will be deep in meditation up there and anyone disturbing him will bring great misfortune among the entire world. There is an array of such reasons but all we know is that we are forbidden to climb up to the peak.

All this is fine. But this is where it gets interesting. If you analyse these theories more closely, you will see that there is some sort of hazy correlation between them. Consider the first theory for instance. Scientists said that the mountain is a man-made pyramid, but even today as we very well know, man is not that technologically advanced to build structures of such massive proportions. Who then could have built it? The second theory was about ‘ancient aliens’ with highly advanced technology. Could there be some link between these two?

Could they have been the ones who built the ‘pyramid’? And if so, Why? And then there is the ‘perfect’ city of Shambala. Hindus believe that Mt. Kailash is the stairway to heaven. Don’t you think the description of Shambala sounds more or less similar to that of heaven? Could the supposedly ancient pyramid be hiding an entire civilisation? If it is true, then our entire history should be rewritten!

Ancient secrets of Mount Kailash remain embedded in the heart of the Himalayas and this mysterious place will continue to fascinate people for many more years to come. Maybe one day we will be able to unravel the mysteries and finally find answers to the questions that intrigue us. It all sounds quite interesting. But until then, it’s all up to you to decide what to believe and what not to. To sum it up, It might end up to be everything that you thought it could be..or it could infact be nothing at all!

092010: The Year We Make Contact

08Apollo 13

Top 10 Space Movies

A realistic approach to the scenario of humanity’s first contact with aliens, and our first attempts to make a trip across the stars to meet them. From a $90 million budget, it grossed $171 million. Fans of hard sci-fi were pleased, although the choice to modify the story by including a preacher who equates science and faith rubbed some viewers the wrong way.

This oft-forgotten sequel to another film on my list doesn’t try to mimic its predecessor, instead opting for its own more straightforward approach. It’s $40 million box office was a disappointment after production costs of $28 million, but it is actually a great sci-fi tale grounded in realism and featuring a strong cast and marvelous effects.

One of two true stories on the list, and one of the most widely acclaimed, including nine Oscar nominations including Best Picture. The heightened realism, human drama, and basis in real events helped this $52 million budgeted picture to an enormous $355 million in global box office, and it remains one of the best true stories put to film.

07Moon A low-budget indie sci-fi movie that looks and feels much bigger, with great effects and powerful performances and themes.

02The Right Stuff

Hyper-realistic visual effects that stunned viewers, 3D that’s some of the greatest put to film, and a simple but thrilling story of survival, this film captured audiences’ imaginations and wouldn’t let go.

A remake of another film on this list, and one of the few remakes that manages to retain the greatness of the original while approaching the story with a unique new perspective.

The first feature film adapting Stanisław Lem’s novel, and while the remake noted above is great, the original film is pure brilliance.

Here is Nolan’s best film to date, a remarkable achievement in sci-fi cinema. The $165 million budget was a wise investment, as Nolan’s last three films have all grossed between $800 million and $1 billion.

The greatest story about pilots, flying, and real-events space travel ever created for cinema. It’s larger than life, yet the genius is that it’s true and so reflects a time when humanity itself was striving to become larger than real life.

012001: A Space Odyssey Nothing else could top this list other than the finest sci-fi movie in history, a spectacular epic conception of space travel. The power of its visual imagery, remarkable considering most of the effects were done in 1966, inspires awe upon every viewing.

Team Precisio - A Journey We started out as a small group of petrol junkies about a year ago when one of us joked about how it would be to own a formula 1 team someday and we ended up fanaticising about it all day long. The very next day we happened to come across an ad about some kind of national gokarting event called NGKC, and we thought , why not give it a go? And that is where it all began. We immediately set out to gather and organise a team of dedicated and interested people and set out on the job. We started studying about kart dynamics and after many days of hard work and under the guidance and support of our college and staff we finally managed to put together a decent kart just a few days before the competition. We managed to clear the virtuals along the way and got selected as one of the top hundred teams to go on to the finals. Being our first venture, we weren’t quite so confident ourselves. And to add oil to the flame, our brakes started to misbehave on the night before the competition. With all the shops closed , there was little we could do about it. Nevertheless we managed a quick fix but there was no guarantee that it would last. The day of the competition finally arrived. Having cleared the ‘Technical Inspection’ with ease and placed second in the ‘Disasem’ event, we got more confident and started to see some light at the end of the road. The dreaded brake test finally arrived and we were about to face our fears. We got a great start and fortunately managed to stop just within the limit. The entire team broke into applause but it was short-lived. One of the judges had noticed that there was a small leak in our carburetor and instantly disqualified us due to safety reasons. So, what could have been a possible victory came to an abrupt halt. But we still finished in the top thirty and it proved to be some consolation to us. Failure is the stepping stone to success, so we left, determined to come back stronger the next year. We started to search for other similar competitions and finally found one whose requirements we satisfied, and registered for it on the very last day. We learnt from our previous mistakes, corrected all our flaws and made a lot more improvisations to make sure that we left nothing to chance. The big day arrived once again and this time we were more confident

than ever. Not surprisingly, we aced through and dominated most of the events, bagging a brilliant second place, lagging behind the first team by just a whisker. We managed to win awards for the best driver and best endurance as well. We returned, glad to have finally earned a name for ourselves and the college. We are really grateful to our college for giving us the support and opportunity and to all those who kept pushing us along the way giving us some great moral support. Who knows?..what started out as a joke could pretty much end up blooming into a stunning reality!

Dream OnMan is a pleasure loving animal. He wants a diversity of enjoyments. His intelligence has made possible a much greater variety of enjoyment than is open to animals. Music, poetry and science, football and baseball and alcohol and cigarettes are some from which people of different temperaments and mental make-up derive pleasure. There are still others who undertake hazardous journeys on the unchartered ocean. Some foolishly expose themselves to frost-bite and other inclemencies of weather simply to be called conquerors of snowy peaks. But, the thrill that these practical men get, fails to stir their soul. He who knows how to build castles in the air, knows the secret of perennial pleasure, which never gives one a feeling of satiety or frustration. Much has been said in praise of the warriors who, by their barbaric exploits, conquered their so-called invincible enemies. But, is it not a fact that these conquerors could never lead a life free from the fear of being overrun by some braver and craftier warrior or soldier? And this imaginary fear drove them from one inhuman act to another. Did not Asoka get many of the claimants to the Mauryan empire put to death? Did not Aurangzeb subject his father and brothers to inhumane treatment simply to become the unchallenged emperor of India? No doubt, achievements give us a sense of fulfilment and a feeling of joy. But, this joy is seldom or never is in proportion to our efforts. Naturally, all our pains taken in executing them lead to insignificant pleasure. Besides, this pleasure is only temporary. It is bound to lead to frustration if success in one achievement is not followed by another. Apart from the way we think that we have done something remarkable, we have to to consider the fact that other might not think the same. This will prick the bubble of our pride and pleasure; the whole hearted appreciation that we get, may only be from a section of people whose opinions we value the least. Then, the fear of not being up to the mark also dissipates the pleasure we are likely to get from doing something concrete. And the period preceding our success is a period of great tension. In fact, what we do by building

castles on the Earth is not to please ourselves but to please others. We work as slaves and not as masters of souls. If some still think there is no pleasure in idle dreams, let them think so. It is a matter of opinion, and if we claim to be civilised, we should not grudge them the right to entertain wrong ideas. Above all, pleasure is completely a personal affair. When it becomes a community affair, as the pleasure from concrete achievement is, we may call it anything else, but to call it pleasure would be a misnomer. Nevertheless, those who are earthly are contemptuous of day dreamers. But, it is the dreamers of such dreams to whom we owe much of colour and joy to in the world. They wipe tears from every eye. They are the angels who do not fear to tread or even to rush, whatever the attitude of the down to earth people may be. It is a fact in all ages that such dreamers have been dubbed cranks. Day dreamers have the power to withdraw themselves from the tedium of boring routine. They, by virtue of sanguine optimism, have the capacity to neutralise the blinding darkness of the realist. The hopes they entertain never meet with frustration, and with undiminished zeal, they go ahead from one pleasure to another. This pleasure is rather unknown to those who cannot abandon themselves completely. An egoist who is ambitious to become supreme lord of a cherished domain cannot know this pleasure. Only the meek enter this kingdom. Obviously, of all sorts of material gains which yield nothing but disappointment, with a pipe in his mouth and a vacant glance in his eye, our dreamer is transported to that region where hatred and ignoble racialism give rise to love, humanism, broad-mindedness and internationalism. And the picture of a world that emerges from such thinking is thrilling and colourful, as are seen through a kaleidoscope by a boy.The man thus engrossed in his visions may appear to some like an ineffectual angel beating wings in the luminous void. But it is in such moments that he becomes what Adam and Eve were before they tasted the forbidden fruit against the will of God.It is perhaps owing to this ennobling effect of day dreams that we lose the capacity of dreaming while awake and resort to somnolent drugs. Youths, petrified by the decadent affluent society which ensures security of life, take forbidden drugs so that they might become deaf

39

to the confounding commotion around them. Whatever a psychologist may attribute this mode of thinking of the youths to, it is a fact that we all crave for pure pleasure which endows us with the capacity to forget the world of pretty jealousies, inglorious competition and foolish ambition. And it is in such moments that we become too human - neither a bundle of inhibitions nor indiscreet devils. A dream of every sane man who does not long for extraneous pleasures and who does not build up his world of gestures on the wreckage of others, pleases. The pleasure thus got is something to be proud of and to be cherished. And such persons have that happy sensibility which does not let them look before and after and pine for what is naught. They see the charmed magic casements opening on the foam of perilous seas, in fairy lands forlorn. Far away from the world.

Team Instincts 2015

Acknowledgement A personal favourite, Dr.Seuss quote, “Don’t cry that it’s over, smile that it happened!” and we whole heartedly feel, there wouldn’t be a better occasion to thank every individual who made this grand event happen today.

Right from day one, there have been a phenomenal number of people who have been working together in unison, with commitment, dedication and passion to put together all the pieces of this huge jigsaw puzzle and pull up Instincts this year.

We would like to sincerely thank Dr. Sunitha Nair ma’am for her continuous support and motivation, the President Ms. Kala Vijayakumar, Principal Dr.S.Salivahanan, Dean Dr.Kasthuri for their persistent inputs and suggestions, the contributors who helped us pull up Pinnacle this year, and all the advertisers for trusting us and investing in Instincts, without whom this cultural event would never have been possible. We also thank all the faculty members for their motivation to make Instincts happen this year.

We would also like to thank the blog developers who opened door to one of the best blogs, ever witnessed. We will continue to remain in debt regardless of conveying our persistent gratitude to all the students who worked for instincts.
