The Engaging Leaders Program is a leadership and professional development program designed for first-year students in the College of Natural Resources. The program emphasizes hands-on learning, real-world applications, and relationship building with faculty, staff, students and community leaders. During the first semester, students participate in training sessions to help them better understand their personal leadership style, strengths and weaknesses. They also learn essential skills for working in diverse groups, networking, and communicating effectively. The highlight of our program is our Shark Tank series, where students work collaboratively to design a program that benefits CNR, NC State, or the local community. Engaging Leaders spend their second semester implementing these programs with their community partner. Programs this year included a military outreach group, a community garden group, and an environmental education group at the Museum of Natural Sciences.

DORIS DUKE CONSERVATION SCHOLARSThe Doris Duke Conservation Scholars Program (DDCSP) is an exciting opportunity for undergraduates at NC State with a demonstrated interest in environmental issues and cultural diversity to receive training, support, mentorship and about $10,000 for two years of paid research experiences and internships.

Hands-on experiences include opportunities across the U.S. and the world with DDCSP partners like the USGS Cooperative Research Units; U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service; Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission; the Ecological Society of America; and other federal, local, state, and tribal agencies and conservation-oriented non-governmental organizations. Research and internship experiences provide meaningful educational, mentoring, and networking opportunities to participating students.

Funded by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation and housed at the University of Florida, the DDCSP is a collaboration between the University of Florida, University of Idaho, University of Arizona, Cornell University and NC State, through each university’s affiliated cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Units.

THE INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION FOR SOCIETY AND NATURAL RESOURCES AND THE GEORGE WRIGHT SOCIETY

IASNR and GWS at NC State pride ourselves in equipping our members with the information and confidence to make a difference in the intersection of natural resources and society. This task is accomplished through rich discussion on natural resource policy and issues, advocacy events and community service, and truly experiencing and strengthening our relationships with the environment through outdoor activities. Our organization is open to both graduate and undergraduate students, and we hope to create and promote a community of concerned individuals committed to protecting natural resources while also recognizing the value of these places to society at large.

The International Association for Society and Natural Resources (IASNR) is an international and interdisciplinary association focused on research and practice related to human-environment and human-natural resources issues, including conflicts and strategies for decreasing harmful human-caused impacts.

The George Wright Society (GWS) emphasizes parks and other public and protected land management and conservation. IASNR and GWS have teamed up to create a more all-encompassing student organization that includes both research and practical application related to human-nature relationships.

The Sport Management Club is a student-run organization at NC State University. It was founded in the spring of 2014 by Nevin Wisnoski, a student in the Sport Management program. Members of the club participate in professional development, social growth, community development, academic engagement, and different networking opportunities. We meet every other Monday at 7pm in Biltmore to hear from guest speakers in the field of sports, have student panel discussions, enjoy watch parties for various sporting events, and talk about our upcoming Sport Management Conference that we are hosting in the spring of 2019. The goal of this conference is to have different panel discussions from various sport professionals to talk about their experiences, and give advice to others trying to work in their profession. Membership is open to all students, but it is mainly targeting people in the Sport Management program who are interested in getting involved here on campus.

The Wolfpack Environmental Student Association (WESA) is a student club and nonprofit established and run by NC State students. The purpose of WESA is to promote environmental awareness and protection on NC State’s campus and within its colleges. WESA strives to connect with other universities, students, and Wake County residents interested in preserving natural resources to stimulate environmental support domestically and internationally. Although environmental advocacy is strongly encouraged, WESA, as a 501c3 nonprofit, cannot significantly influence legislation as part of its activities and/or participate in campaign activity for or against political candidates or its nonprofit status will be revoked.

Members of this organization also plan and lead environmental initiatives at NC State, Wake County, and beyond. In addition to planning and executing environmental projects, WESA members organize professional development activities, such as job fairs and professional workshops.

XI SIGMA PI

CNR COUNCIL

Xi Sigma Pi is the only national scholastic honor society that recognizes achievement in forestry and environmental resources education. The society was founded at the University of Washington in 1908. The Mu Chapter at NC State was added in 1940 as the first chapter in the Southern Region of the United States. There are only 11 chapters in the United States older than our chapter. Membership is by invitation only.

The objectives of the society are to secure and maintain a high standard of scholarship in natural resources education, to work for the improvement of natural resources professions, and to promote a fraternal spirit among those engaged in activities related to natural resources. Each year the society holds an annual banquet for the induction of new members into Xi Sigma Pi. Inductees and current members enjoy a social gathering, dinner, and an induction ceremony.

In April 2018 the society inducted about 40 new members at the annual banquet.

New Members: Alexander Ade, Vitor Aguiar, Casey Beam, James Brodie, Rachel Burris, Siobhan Cahill, Cameron Cairney, Max Craft, Charles Decker, Giacomo Fagan, Bailey Gray, Zach Grover, Winslow Gurney, Quyen-Huong Ha, Sarah Hallyburton, Allison Harris, Ryan Held, Megan Hester, Madeline Hook, Maya Hoon, Alexander Hornaday, Meredith Hovis, Chad Kibbe, Justin Lindemann, Shan Liu, Jordan Luff, Drew Markiewicz, Daniel McAdams, Joshua Mesimer, Kaitlin Midgett, Alan Miller, Evan Morris, Geeta Nakkina, Megan Parrish, Hartwell Perkinson, T. The CNR Council serves as the unified voice of all students in the College of Natural Resources. The group is composed of representatives from all recognized student organizations in the college. We meet monthly to discuss current issues, problems, achievements and concerns, as well as develop ideas for better serving students. We are responsible for allocating funds each year to student organizations to provide support for various activities, as well as helping publish the Pinetum.
