Pillaton Village NewsNo. 203 September 2019Where to begin this month. Apart from a few weeks in August, a fine, warm summer, cricket going well, new Prime Minister, General Election on the horizon and Brexit (at time of writing, and probably a safe bet) still completely unresolved. Now I know previously I’ve likened politics to a TV game show, namely ‘Bake-Off,’ but I thought I might have another go. So, purely in the interests of research, as I’ve never watched the programme, I looked up ‘Love Island’ on Wikipedia to see the format for this popular TV reality show. The ‘Wiki’ description, slightly paraphrased, read as follows: “Love Island involves a group of contestants, referred to as Islanders living in isolation from the outside world in a villa in Mallorca, constantly under video surveillance. To survive in the villa the Islanders must be coupled up whether it be for love, friendship or money. Over the duration of the series they can choose to remain in their current couple or swap and change. Any Islander who remains single is eliminated and dumped from the island. Islanders can also be eliminated via public vote. During the final week, the public vote for which couple they want to win the series.” Now with just a few adjustments; swap MPs for Islanders, large building in Westminster for villa in Mallorca and Party for couple, it’s scarily like real life. All that’s different are the skimpy costumes and ‘budgie smugglers,’ but that’s probably a relief. The next copy date is 4 November 2019, - full details on page 23.

PILLATON VILLAGE HALL CIO TRUSTEE VACANCyLove living in Pillaton? Would you like to help keep our special community alive? Energy, enthusiasm and ideas? You are just the person we need to join our small team of trustees managing Pillaton Village Hall and the playing field. The Village Hall was built as the village school and saved for the village to use as a community centre when the school closed in the 1950s. The playing field was a generous gift to the village by the World War One Commemoration Group who raised funds for the purchase of the field. Both are managed by a Registered Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) set up in 2017, which means the Trustees can feel safe knowing they bear no personal financial liability. If you join our team, you’ll be one of 12 trustees who try to keep both the hall and field well maintained and financially viable. St PetroC’S SoCietYThe Church Harvest Festival Auction this year will be in aid of St Petroc’s Society. This Cornish Society was founded over 30 years ago, with the aim of ending street homelessness in the County. They provide accommodation, support, advice, training and resettlement services to men and women aged 16 to 65 who find themselves homeless for any reason, and for whom no provision is made within the community, either statutory or otherwise.Homelessness is not just an urban issue, many ‘hidden’ homeless people are found by St Petroc’s outreach teams trying to find shelter in rural communities, woods and beaches, especially in this more rural county after the tourist season. The Charity opens two night centres in Truro and Penzance during December and January and at other times when severe weather is expected, but most resources are aimed at supporting people and helping them to get a safe place to call home, rebuild their lives and contribute to their community.Every year the local churches choose a charity to support. This year we are planning further fundraising events for St Petroc’s, including organising a collection of winter clothes and bedding in the Autumn - watch this space!

July MeetingOur speaker in July was Isobelle Delbridge from the Green Cow Dairy. Mark and Isobelle live at Plushayes Farm, Plushabridge, near Upton Cross with their young children and took over the Green Cow delivery service three years ago. They have a herd of 30 cows and also keep sheep. They farm in an organic and traditional manner which was recognized last year by winning the Cornwall Life Food Processor of the Year award. Their ethos is to provide very fresh cows milk as natural as possible delivered in glass bottles or plastic containers direct to your doorstep.Customers say the milk is extra tasty and creamy as it is from cows fed entirely on grass as nature intended. They also make their own butter and have 1200 customers all across South East Cornwall. They support other small businesses in the area by selling and delivering their products along with the milk, with local eggs, apple juice, honey, sausages, bread and goat products. For customers who do not have deliveries there is an honesty box at Blunts providing milk and dairy products. The family have a very good work and business ethos. Isobelle also brought with her milk and butter for anyone to try and buy.

Sue WymanSeptember MeetingThe business of our meeting on the 9th of September covered a number of items and plans for future activities. This included the Federation Council Meeting in Redruth in October, when Kate Humble will be the guest speaker, our own Harvest Supper, and, dare we mention it so soon, suggestions for carol singing at the Weary Friar at Christmas. This being our annual Open Meeting, we welcomed a number of guests to join us for the main event of the evening. We were entertained by Viv Brammer and Roger Bennett from Truro, who gave a delightful insight into Cornish Culture and the history of tin mining and fishing through the music and folk songs of the last two centuries. There was much toe-tapping, chorus singing and the spooky tale of the Lady with the Lantern who walks the Cornish coast looking for the child she lost in a tragic shipwreck. The evening concluded with the usual refreshments and a friendly chat.

Our cream tea in June raised £589.30 for the Cornwall Air Ambulance Heli Appeal and as a result, we were offered a visit to the helicopter site in Newquay. The morning of 1st of August was agreed on and the trip evolved to include an afternoon visit to Davidstow Airfield and War Museum.Ten of us set off in the Saltash Hopper, ably driven by volunteer driver Bryan, and we were greeted at the Air Ambulance HQ by Barbara Corbett, an Appeal Board member. We saw one Air Ambulance leave on a 'shout' as we listened to a moving presentation by David, one of the Air Ambulance staff. After tucking into homemade cakes with coffee, we had a viewing of the second helicopter in the hangar where we posed for our photo shoot. We were lucky enough just as we boarded the Hopper to see the first helicopter return, after completing one of 800 missions accomplished each year. The Heli appeal is ongoing and as a charity, it requires regular funding from lottery subscribers, shops and events like the Cream Tea. Continuing the “flying” theme, our visit to Davidstow amazed us all. The various hangars contained memorabilia staged to give a full picture of what life must have been like for the armed forces – and ordinary folk - in the early 1940's. Anyone for one of the “27exciting recipes with tinned herrings”?! (The title of an old cookery book on display). This little gem of a museum is run by Steve and Sheila and a host of volunteers, it is not your typical tourist attraction. A good outing was had by all and plans for further fundraising for the Air Ambulance have started. Watch this space.
