when my strength is spent.” – Psalms 71:9 We read about it in the newspapers, we hear about it on TV, and when doing market research it comes to the fore. America is getting older. The population age 65 and up has grown to over 41.4 million, an increase of 18% since 2000. Today’s 65 plus

age group now represents 13.3% of America’s population and will climb to 21% of the population by 2040. That is a lot of people! This year’s Older Americans Month theme is “Unleash the Power of Age.” Every year since 1963, the Administration on Aging has designated May as the month set aside to celebrate Older Americans Month. So, how do we a s a c o u n t r y adequately celebrate

our Older Americans? … And specifically how do we “Unleash the Power of Age” into that celebration? Maybe a good start is a reminder from the Psalmist. In Psalms 71:9 we hear the plea to not be “cast off” or “forsaken”. What does that mean in 2013? How do we value the older persons among us? Is it something that is done for, or something that is done by the older person? A bit of reflection would suggest that it is likely

45 ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION

Swiss Village Retirement Community is excited to celebrate 45 years of service. To mark this special occasion, Swiss Village has designated the weekend of May 18 & 19 to celebrate this anniversary. As a gift to the community, Swiss Village would like to invite the public to attend a free concert given by the Bernished Brass, Ryan Hirschy, and Brad Byerly, on Saturday, May 18, at 6:30 p.m. in the South Adams High School Burkhalter Auditorium. Sunday, May 19, Swiss Village has planned an ice-cream social and open house from 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. Guest will be able to enjoy special music in the main lounge, and ice-cream sundaes will be served with lots of toppings. Guided tours will be provided through Westenfeld, Swiss Village’s short-term rehabilitation wing and Zurich and Lucerne Haus featuring the newly remodeled independent living apartments. Join us as we celebrate the past 45 years of Providing Compassion, Promoting Wellness, and Achieving Excellence.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY RESIDENTS IN MEMORY

Swiss Village experienced the loss of several residents who called Swiss Village home. Condolences go out to the family and friends of Viola Ringger who passed away April 2 at the age of 103. Viola came to Swiss Village in January 2013. Donald Moore was at the age of 87 when he passed away on April 11. April 2007 was when he came to Swiss Village. We express our sympathy to the family and friends of Donald. On April 15 Maxine Lehman passed away at the age of 91. Maxine had been at Swiss Village since October 1999. Our condolences are with Maxine’s friends and family. Condolences go out to the family and friends of Dora Tarkington who passed away April 16 at the age of 81. Dora came to Swiss Village in November 2012. Loren Sprunger was at the age of 84 when he passed away on April 22. May 2007 was when he came to Swiss Village. We express our sympathy to the family and friends of Loren. On April 24 Frances Maks passed away at the age of 94. Frances had been at Swiss Village since January 2009 . Ou r condolences are with Frances’ friends and family.

In recognition of May as National O l d e r A m e r i c a n s Month, Swiss Village and the Berne Rotary Club will be co-sponsoring their 23rd annual Senior Breakfast on Friday, May 3 from 7:00 to 9:00 a.m. All seniors are welcome, so please plan to join us as we Celebrate Swiss Village’s 45th anniversary and enjoy a time of good food and fellowship. Plus, sign up for door prize drawings and take advantage of health screenings that will be provided from 6 a.m. – 8:30 a.m. Parking will be

available at the main circle drive entrance or in the north parking lot by the Social Corner.

guests will enjoy entertainment by vocalist, Robert Kowalczyk. Kowalczyk is a native of Berne, and has a Bachelors Degree in Music and Vocal Performance with a minor in Theatre Arts from Heidelberg University. He has studied in York, England. He is currently pursuing a Master’s Degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Healthcare Administration at Indiana Wesleyan University.

By the time the Lord made mothers, he was in the sixth day of working overtime. An angel appeared and asked, “Why are you spending so much time on this one?” The Lord answered and said, “Have you seen the spec sheet on her?” She has to be completely washable, but not plastic, have 180 moveable parts, all replaceable; run on black coffee and leftovers; have a lap that can hold three children at one time and that disappears when she stands up; have a kiss that can cure anything from a scrapped knee to a broken heart; and six pair of hands. The angel was astounded at the requirements for this one. “Six pair of hands! No Way!” Said the angel. The Lord replied, “Oh, it’s not the hands that are the problem, it’s the three pair of eyes that mothers must have.” “And that’s just on the standard model?” The angel asked. The Lord nodded in agreement, “Yes, one pair of eyes are to see through the closed door as she asks her children what they are doing, even though she already knows. Another pair in the back of her head are to see what she shouldn’t but what she has to know, and of course the ones here in front that can look at a child when he goofs up and say, “I understand, and I love you,” without so much as uttering a word. “Lord,” said the angel, touching his sleeve gently, “Come to bed, this is too much work for one day. Wait until tomorrow to finish.” “But I can’t, “ the Lord protested. “I am so close to finishing this creation that is so close to my own heart. She already heals herself when she is sick AND can feed a family of six on a pound of hamburger AND can get a nine year old to stand in the shower.” The angel moved closer and touched the woman. “But you have made her so soft, Lord.” “She is soft, “ the Lord agreed, “but I have also made her tough. You have no idea what she can endure or accomplish.” “Will she be able to think?” Asked the

W e e n j o y e d celebrating signs of spring with a country drive and ice cream stop at the Willshire Drive-In as well as the Spring Fling hosted by the South Adams High School Service Committee. During Reminiscing with Recipes this month, we made delicious gooseberry pie as well as hickory nut pie. We also enjoyed watching the NCAA tournament unfold and celebrated with a Final 4 hot dog luncheon. Congratulations to Dawn Kinzer who won the Swiss Village resident bracket for the tournament! A few highlights of the month also has been a few new activities such as Busride Bingo and an outing to the Fort Wayne Philharmonic. We look forward to watching the Tincaps play on May 22 as well! Tickets are limited, so be sure to sign up soon!

RESIDENTIAL ACTIVITIES — Jamie Kittle

The weather sure h a s b e e n unpredictable, but we have been just warm and cozy doing some of our favorite activities. This month we have enjoyed some of our regularly scheduled activates like: Bible stories, Hymn Sing, Morning warm ups, Reading Circle, Wii Bowling, Kinder Haus Visits, What’s cookin’, and many more. A few new activities we discovered were: The Rhyming Game, Celery Roses and Junk Drawer Detective. Many laughs were had during the rhyming game. We used celery sticks to paint roses with stems. We have some great talent. The junk drawer detective game brought back lots of memories of what kinds of odds and ends we put in our drawers. What can be found in your junk drawer?

Spring has arrived (sort of!) and with that, we have commenced with our weekly bus rides again! We’ve been thoroughly enjoying getting outdoors to observe the changes in nature, and are anticipating warmer weather so that we can go out for wheelchair and golf cart rides soon as well. This month we had our annual wheelchair rodeo, at which time the housekeeping, maintenance, and social services departments join us in getting everyone’s wheelchair spiffed up and running smoothly. It’s a big job, but very important. Our residents also enjoyed hearing from Dick McKean who came to talk and reminisce about the Berne Bears and Adams County high school basketball.

This year, the winter has seemed to go on forever! It is so lovely seeing the residents getting out more and just enjoying the beauty of the spring flowers. We are looking forward to starting golf cart rides and the bus trips with different places to stop and see! We have welcomed in new friends and have also said goodbye to a very dear old friend. We continue to try cooking new foods, enjoy movies on Friday night, and try a new craft or a new game.

We took our much anticipated reward trip with those residents who participated in our Winter Wellness Journey. We took the scenic route through the countryside toward Bluffton, IN. It was amazing to see the Wabash so far out of it's banks! With so much history represented in our

group, we talked of past floods in this area. Ready for a great lunch, we arrived at the Snug Cafe and enjoyed the ambiance of “the good old days” well represented in the décor of the cafe. We were warmly welcomed by the “regular” diners and Chef Minon! He let us sample some creme brulee (burnt cream) and he signed his cookbook for us as well! Though it was a chilly day, our spirits were warm as we headed to Oubache State Park! We took a wonderful guided tour of the park; stopping at the lake, fire tower, and even the camp restroom facilities! Spice bush was blooming everywhere and we were able to see wild turkey & bison! It was a memorable trip and we enjoyed each others company immensely. We look ahead to our Annual Wellness Fair on May 14th and Wellness Assessments on May 20th & 21st.

SOUTH CAMPUS WELLNESS — Emily Arnold & Rachel Rosswurm

The Arthur and Gloria Muselman Wellness Pavilion/Swiss Village Inc. and the Berne Tri-Weekly News partnered up to offer the Fifth Annual Village Meltdown, a contest awarding prizes to the top three teams and a cash donation given to a charity chosen by the overall winning team. Team Buffet Busters, Grant and Heath Moser, won first place in the contest with a total team weight loss of 21.03%. The Buffet Busters set an initial goal of

achieving a 20% reduction in total body weight.

These men reached their goal and took a commanding lead to capture first place. Buffet Busters received a six month membership to the Arthur & Gloria Muselman Wellness Pavilion and a t-shirt. By achieving 1st place, they were also able to choose a local charity to donate competition entry fees to. Grant and Heath chose to donate money to the Big Jaws Campus Life Program of Adams and Wells Counties. A total of $240 was presented to the local organization.

The Lord said, “The tear is her way of expressing her joy, her sorrow, her disappointment, her pain, her loneliness. The angel was impressed. “You are a genius, Lord.” The Lord looked somber, “ I didn’t put it there.”

NEW EMPLOYEES Swiss Village welcomes several new staff members this month. Fawntasha Garner, Samantha Schwartz, Spencer Ginter, Jenna Welling, & Kelsie Low are all new CNAs in Healthcare. Bryson Boots is a new employee in Dietary. Alicia Degler is a new employee in Kinder Haus.

The apartment renovation project is now complete in Zurich and Lucerne Haus. Many of you were able to attend our Tacos and Tours

Night, and had a personal look at these newly remodeled apartments. During this project we were able to create two large two bedroom suites, in addition to the updates made to the one and two bedroom apartments. Residents in Zurich and Lucerne will soon begin to see updates to the lounge décor in both lounges. Swiss Village plans to begin updating Basel Haus in the very near future. Basel will also feature several two bedroom suites. If you are interested in taking a look at these newly remolded apartments, and two bedroom suites, contact Michelle today at 260.589.3173.

As recognition of an employee’s 25 years of service to Swiss Village, the employee, their supervisor, Daryl, and I take them to lunch. We had such an event

recently. However, this time it was a little different. Because this celebration was for a department head and assistant, there were several members of the leadership team -- Daryl, Linda Arnold, Derick Bailey, and I – who took Greg Schmidt and Patty Schindler to lunch at the Back 40 in Decatur. Greg and Patty, who are Director and Assistant Director of Food Service, were hired within a few weeks of each other in 1988. Greg was hired on February 16 and Patty on March 21, 1988. Greg was hired as Director of Food Service. Patty was hired as a dietary worker and through the years has been promoted numerous times and is now the Assistant Director of Dietary. Both were presented with gifts to celebrate their milestone. Congratulations and thanks to both of these dedicated employees! We do appreciate the excellent work you do in providing delicious meals to residents and employees.
