Located in the southeastern part of the Andes, Cusco
is Peru's main tourist destination and one of the most
important in the Americas. Our time in Cusco begins
with a bus tour of pre-Incan historical sites. Two
nights will be spent at base camp near the hot springs
of Lares, in the Sacred Valley of the Incas. From camp
we will enjoy a full day of hiking in the mountains,
featuring beautiful lake views. Next is a visit to the
village Ollantaytambo, once an Incan town, followed by
a train trip to Aguas Calientes in the Amazon basin.
The journey continues by bus to the fabled site of
Machu Picchu. Our guide will help us explore the
history and excitement of this archaeological wonder.
While in Cusco there will be an opportunity to meet
with members of the local Lutheran church, Talitha
Kum. The final day includes a visit to the Huch Uy
Runa Day School and Orphanage. Huch Uy Runa
means “small important person”, reflecting their
philosophy that inside every “little one” there is
someone very “big” and important that is yet to be.
Every weekday 190 children
come through the doors of
Huch Uy Runa for a meal,
primary education, training,
and medical care. After lunch
we return to Lima then
depart for home.
Cusco and Machu Picchu
Widen your view of Peru The pilgrimage begins in the coastal
city of Lima for intentional relationship
building with the Peruvian Lutheran
Church. Our perspective will be
augmented by visits to ancient Incan
ruins and other historical sites. The
journey continues with an extended
excursion to Cusco, where we will
hike, camp, and visit the famous site of
Machu Picchu. The trip includes times
for reflection throughout, as we learn
from our brothers and sisters in Peru.
Our time in Lima will be
full of rich cultural
experiences. From Lima it
is a 45-minute drive south
to the pre-Columbian
Pachacamac Pilgrimage
Center overlooking the
fertile valley of Lurin and
the Pacific Ocean. The archaeological site includes
palaces, plazas and temples that have been recently
restored, as well as an on-site museum housing
interesting pre-Hispanic relics. We’ll tour Lima´s
Historical Center, visiting
the Main Square with the
Government Palace and the
City Hall, and the
Monastery of St. Francis of
Assisi. The 300 year-old
monastery is a jewel of the
viceregal architecture of
Peru. The colonial complex
includes the churches of San
Francisco, La Soledad and El
Milagro. We’ll learn about the history, architecture,
religious icons and works of art throughout the
complex, as well as walk through its catacombs.
Each day in Lima we will also visit
our companions in Christ in
southern and central Lima, to
connect with our brothers and
sisters through worship, prayer,
Bible study, reflection and
conversation. What will happen
when we are church together?
Lima
What is my first step? Register on-line by March 1 at
waytolead.org/2016-peru-pilgimage before you make flight
reservations. Important information and updates about
the pilgrimage are available here as well.
What flights do I book myself? Each person needs to
make their own roundtrip reservations for the flight from
the US to Lima. Take special care when choosing your
return flight. Make sure your flight departure time is
between 10pm on Saturday, June 18, and 4am on Sunday,
June 19. We will handle all your in-country travel needs
including the flight from Lima to Cusco.
Will there be other costs for this trip? Yes—you will
buy your own lunches and dinners except during camp
(June 14 and 15), pay for some snacks and any souvenirs
that you may want. Plan for about $10 per lunch and $15
per dinner. Most people spend less than $100 on
souvenirs.
Do I have to exchange money? Yes—We will
exchange money in the security of our hotel.
Can children and youth come on this trip? Children
ages 12-14 are welcome to travel with their parents. High
school youth (age 14+) are welcome to travel with an adult sponsor who will take responsibility for their care. A
special release form will be required for everyone under 18, to be signed by their parents/guardians.
What if I have to cancel? Can we make substitutions? A partial refund for the trip is available before April
1, 2016. We cannot refund the cost of your in-country flight. No refunds at all can be made after April 1.
Substitutions are encouraged but will not change the refund policy for in-country flights. You are responsible for
canceling your flight from the US to Lima.
What if I can’t participate in the live, on-line Getting Ready Process? Please make every effort to
participate in this critical beginning of our pilgrimage together. Conversations and face-to-face sharing of health
care information, travel details, cultural sensitivities and community building are important for a successful faith
journey. If it becomes impossible to participate, though, this orientation session will be recorded.
Will we be doing a service project? This is a cultural immersion experience. We will be hosted by local
Peruvian congregations throughout our visit. The goal of these visits will be to build relationships based on our
shared faith.
Will we have translators? We will have local translators and Spanish speakers in our group.
Where will we stay? In Lima we will stay in a hotel in the district of Miraflores. In Cusco we will be in a hotel
near the town square. All hotels are safe, clean and near restaurants. You will have at least one roommate sharing
your room and bathroom. While camping, we will be in 2-person tents.
Where do we eat? Breakfasts will be in our hotel; lunches and dinners will mostly be in restaurants. We will not
consume the following: salad, fresh fruit not peeled by ourselves, ice in drinks. We will use bottled water only,
even for brushing teeth.
What should I bring? A packing list is available here.
Will my cell phone work? Check with your cell phone provider about international calling. Rates will increase.
Emergency information will be provided.
Will I have internet access? Our hotels will have internet access and computers available.
How will we travel in Peru? Most travel on land will be in private buses and 15 passenger vans.
What shots do I need? Talk with your doctor for any specific needs you may have. Cusco participants may also
want to discuss medicine that will help curb altitude sickness. The CDC’s recommendations are available here.
