Pike County Poor School Records, 1841 Transcribed by Stephanie Bradley from the Pike County Probate Courthouse records. Foreword by Stephanie Bradley [edited for space considerations]: These records were in a special book entitled Poor School Records 1841.It looks as though at some time the pages were in a book that deteriorated beyond help and they took them out and pasted them in a new book. Added by Barbara Smallwood Stock, CG: The “Poor Schools” were an early version of Georgia’s public schools. In the 1800’s, those who could afford private schools or tutors did so. The Poor Schools give those who could not afford a private education the opportunity to an education. The non-landed poor (factory, farm, and other common laborers) generally leave few records; deeds and estate records are usually nonexistent for them. The Poor School Records can help fill in this gap. School attendance in Georgia was not compulsory until 1916, so some eligible children will not appear in these records. Other districts will be added later. Return to the the previous page by clicking your back arrow. Source: Poor School Records, 1841, Pike County, Georgia; Probate Office, Zebulon, Georgia.
