Plant Research Common name of my plant—Sundew Scientific Name of Plant—Drosera rotundifolia How should I care for my plant?--they grow best in wet and very moist conditions. That

would also include acidic soils and plenty of sunlight. Use spring, rain or well water otherwise tap water contains chemicals that could kill it. Best growth appears in sphagnum moss.

How does your plant reproduce?--The sundew produces seeds that respond to moisture and sunlight, causing them to germinate. Most temperate sundews, like mine, require cold and damp environments to germinate. For food they mostly require insects that are ensnared by the scent of their penduncular glands.

Where is your plant found naturally in the world?--They are found in Alaska, all he way to New Zealand in the South. 50% of the species are in Australia, and South America and Africa are home to about 20+ species. A few species are found in Eurasia and North America.

What does your plant do to the ecosystem?--the sundew mainly gets rid of pests but is otherwise used for medicinal purposes. It was used as a remedy for coughs and for decorations.

3 Fun Facts about your plant...--The sundew attracts insects and they dissolve into liquids that the plant uses as its nutrients. It has droplets of dew on the edge of the hairs that cover its “tentacles”. The only food source is its prey, because it can't use the acidic nutrients in the soil that is in most of its habitats although it does use sunlight to grow for the beginning of its growth.

Why did you choose this plant?--I chose this plant because of its abilities and the unique way it looks and captures its food. It's not totally an autotroph, but mostly a heterotroph, so it makes the growing process interesting...because I get to watch it eat the insects that I feed it.
