Gift of Love and Life

8

Gift of Love and Life Mother’s Day is a holiday celebrated to honor mothers and motherhood, maternal bonds, and influence of mothers in society, that is observed in different ways throughout the world.

The celebration of mother’s day began in the United States in the 20th century which is not re-lated to many other celebrations about motherhood such as the Greek cult Cybele, the Roman festival of Hilaria, or the Christian Mothering Sunday celebration. But in some countries, Mother’s Day become similar with these older traditions. Traditionally, Mother’s day involves presenting mothers flowers, cards, and some other gifts. Sometimes a program or a party is pre-pared to give honor to mothers.

Mother as the “Light” of the Home

Mother is considered to be the “light” of the home. Her influence in the home is immeasurable as she inspires and gives life to her household. The well-being of the society, the success of the community, and the prosperity of the nation as a whole, greatly depends upon home influences, thus, the home should be a little heaven on earth, the very place where affections are cultivated most importantly the love, and respect to one another.

Troubles may arise in the home environment yet the mother’s heart bears and surpasses them all.

It is a great privilege and sacred duty for her to train all those who are under her care and her influence by her teachings and example especially in the molding of the characters of her children.

Indeed, there’s no nobler task than to raise the future generation. If Washington’s mother had not been of strong character in molding young George’s mind, and talents, her son would not become a man of strong disposition and moral power and beauty. His mother gave him the lessons for practical life. She inspired him with principles of life and firm integrity--his true greatness. She helped to achieve the revolution—she shared the richest enjoyments of its success; but she did it through her heroic son.

John Quincy Adams once paid the follow-ing tribute to his mother: “It is due to gratitude and na-ture that I should acknowledge and avow that such I have been, whatever it was, such as I hope to be in all futurity, must be ascribed, under providence, to the precepts and example of my mother.” The Ger-man philosopher Kant remarked, “I shall never forget that it was my mother who caused the good that is in

me to fructify.” --AH EG White

Mother is the name of God in the lips and hearts of children (William Makepeace Thackeray). It is at our mother’s knee that we acquire our noblest and truest and highest ideals, but there is seldom money in them (Mark Twain), for they are priceless. That’s why the one who takes the child by hand takes the mother by the heart (German proverb), for a child is a mother’s life and real treasures.

Give the respect due to your mothers, obey and be kind to them, for if you lost your mother—you lost the best of all!

PHUKET VEGETARIAN FESTIVAL The Vegetarian Festival in Phuket is a col-orful event held over a nine-day period in October, celebrating the Chinese community’s belief that ab-stinence from meat and various stimulants during the ninth lunar month of the Chinese calendar will help them obtain good health and peace of mind.Though the origins of the festival are unclear, it is com-monly thought that the festival was bought to Phuket by a wandering Chinese opera group who fell ill with malaria while performing on the island.

They decided to adhere to a strict vegetar-ian diet and pray to the Nine Emperor gods to en-sure purification of the mind and body. To everyone’s amazement the opera group made a complete re-covery. The people celebrated by holding a festival that was meant to honor the gods as well as express the people’s happiness at surviving what was, in the 19th century, a fatal illness. Subsequently the festival has grown and developed into a spectacular yearly event that is attended by thousands with participants flying in from China and other Asian destinations.

One of the most exciting aspects of the fes-tival are the various, (and sometimes gruesome) cer-emonies which are held to invoke the gods. Fire walk-ing, body piercing, and other acts of self-mortification undertaken by participants acting as mediums of the gods, have become more spectacular and daring as each year goes by. Men and women puncture their cheeks with various items including knives, skew-ers and other household items. It is believed that the Chinese gods will protect such persons from harm, and little blood or scarring results from such mutilation acts. This is definitely not recommended for the faint-hearted to witness.

In 2011 some 74 people were injured with one death reported. Injuries are usually sustained from the indiscriminate use of firecrackers so beware of this pitfall and stay well away from this deafening and sometimes frightening aspect of the Vegetarian Festival.

Original Phuket settlers work on their fishing boats. The family members are hardworking in order to earn a living. Through time, people from every-where visited the island and some decided to stay and put up their own businesses. Phuket began to flourish as more and more visitors discovered the mag-nificent paradise island. Businesses of all sorts progress as tourists (especially) from all other the world crowd the beautiful beaches during holidays and summer time.

Charoy, a mother of three, decided to put up a mini mart business on a retail and wholesale basis in Phuket about two decades ago. Her family migrated to Phuket for more business opportunities. Now, as a retiree, she decided to spend more time for her mom and grandchild. As her strength is failing her for the mini mart business, she decided to hand it to her son and daughter-in-law. “I’ve been working in this retail business for quite sometime, now that I’m old, my son and daugh-ter-in-law can take care of the business,” she said confidently. “I can take good care for my mom and look after my grandchild,” she added.

Fortunately, her grandchild is lucky enough

to have a grandmother like her. A lot of children are not so fortunate, unattended and left to themselves. She’s hoping that she could be of great help for her grandchild. She hopes to give him proper guidance and inspiration, share valuable wisdom, and values that will be treasured for a lifetime. “I hope we could raise him to be good and responsible person, strong in character and true to principles,” she said.

+ LIVELIHOOD

19

Self-employed individuals in small-scale businesses are very common in the streets around the Kingdom of Thailand. Food is ever present since it is one of the basic necessities of life. One of the most favorite is the noodle soup that comes in differ-ent flavors. People from all walks of life would crowd especially in the late afternoon, for many locals and tourists find it irresistible.

Most Thai noodles are made from rice while some are made of wheat and eggs. Woon sen are mung bean noodles that turn translucent when cooked (and are often referred to as cellophane noodles in English). There are different kinds of rice noodles: sen yai (very wide, flat, soft fresh noodles), sen lek (thin, flat, usually dried noodles), and sen mii (thin, round noodles) are the most common.

Thai noodle soups are either served with spicy red pork (moo daeng), chicken (on the bone), beef, and occasionally coagulated pig’s blood. Naam, naam tom yam, naam-tok. Naam are just plain broth, usually pork or beef, which has been simmered with aromatics and spices for hours — most vendors have their own special broth. Naam tom yam is seasoned in the tom yam-style. Naam tok is broth where blood has been blended into the stock.

Most vendors add meat to match their broth. Luk chin are firm meatballs; luk chin mum are soft meat balls are also added. Muu daeng (roasted, seasoned pork loin, the seasoning gives it a red col-or), and many others, including liver, blood cake, and dumplings filled with ground meat or shrimp called giow are some of the choices.

Vegetables are also added according to your preference. Vegetables usually served in sepa-rate plate and other spices such as fish sauce, ground hot chili, ground peanut, sour sauce or soy sauce is also added as desired.

Nighttime businesses in Phuket have many kinds. Businesses come in various ways and sizes. There are bars, nightclubs, restaurants, shops selling drinks, and many more. Most of the owners have a hefty income, especially during the high season when they make more profit many times more than usual months.

Our team interviewed a handsome and openhearted fellow, who is the owner of a snooker lounge.

Why did he choose this business, and how much does this kind of business really make? What enticed this man to open up a shop?

Leisure Time BusinessInterview by AL Snow

Many people in Phuket call this fellow Goh(in South Thailand it is used to address for elder) Siang. Mr. Siang told us that snooker is just his past time be-cause he has many friends and that he likes to relax during his leisure time by playing snooker. Apart from this, playing snooker could help someone practice concentration, planning, and patience.

+ SPECIAL FEATURE

23

Another reason why Mr. Siang opened up a snooker shop it is because he has many friends and he wanted to be able to welcome them and give the opportunity to practice snooker more than mak-ing money or business. Right now, Mr. Siang works in law offices more than he does at the snooker lounge. There are many snooker establishments in Phuket and some have 10-12 tables. Before one can have this kind of business, a permit and registration as a club must be secured beforehand, otherwise it will be ille-gal. The price of registering is fairly high so it would be wise to have many tables. For Mr. Siang he has only one table in an air conditioned room to entertain his friends and all the rest are open air tables.

How to play snooker:

Step 1: Obtain the proper equipment. Snooker is played with 22, unnumbered object balls, divided into two groups of 15 red balls, 6 balls of different colours and one white ball (the cue ball). Each ball has a different point value: red=1, yellow=2, green=3, brown=4, blue=5, pink=6, and black=7.

Step 2: Understand that you’re trying to score a higher number of points than your opponent by potting the balls, i.e. sinking the red and the coloured balls alter-nately into the table pockets.

Step 3: Toss a coin to decide who is to play first. The first player has to cause the cue ball to contact a red ball. If he fails to do this, the other player tries.

Step 4: The first player to cause the cue ball to con-tact a red ball continues by potting or touching one of the coloured balls and then a red ball in sequence until he fails. Then, the turn is moved to the other player, who has to pot a red then a coloured ball in sequence until he fails.

Step 5: Continue in that manner as long as there are still red balls on the table. As long as there are red balls on the table, all the potted coloured balls return to their original position on the table.

Step 6: Pot the lowest value to the highest value of coloured balls in sequence after the red balls run out. From then on, the coloured balls are no longer placed back in their original position.

Step 7: The snooker game ends when there are no longer balls on the table. The winner is the player who had scored the highest number of points.Losing points, the player might lose points in some cases such as:

• The player knocks the white cue ball into the pocket.

• The player strikes the white ball and does not hit the designated color ball as in the rules. That’s how easy to play an enjoyable and relaxing snooker game.

“Anyone who is interested to try his hand and enjoy this game may drop by my place,”Mr. Goh Siang said. His snooker lounge is located in Cherng Talae. He can be reached through his email at: [email protected]

Don’t spoil what you had expected to be an enjoyable and a memorable holiday in Phuket with a least expected jellyfish sting. And if you are re-ally bent on venturing into a water sport or two in the Andaman Sea, the more that we should remind you that jellyfish sting should be at the top of your list of cautions.

Thailand sea coasts host one or two of the less than a hundred considered dangerous jellyfish types.

Jellyfish Sting Remedies+ HEALTH & BEAUTY

25

There are around two thousand species of these brainless sea creatures across the globe. Yes, Mother Nature did not give jellyfish any brain at all. But watch out because the most dangerous species, the Box Kelly, as reported some years back by the New Scientisl magazine is not just and ‘dim-witted ocean drifters’ but actually ‘fast, active predators that hunt and kill with incredible speed and brutality.

Every centimeter of the Box jellyfish’s ten-tacles has three million stinging cells through which it releases its poison. The fact is it is the most poisonous creature in our planet. It will immediately kill its victim in a matter of two minutes, or even less.

The identified jellyfish infested shores would normally have signposts bearing a warning. If you see one, you better stay away from the water and avoid the deadly creature at all cost. Problems on Box Jel-lies occur between the months of October and May.

The victim would usually show symptoms such as severe pain, headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, redness of swollen skin or would, difficulty in breathing, difficulty swallowing and speaking, sweat-ing, shivering, and sometimes even experiencing pulse or heart failure

26

Here are treatments that were effected to Box Jellyfish victims and were proven effective. First, pour vinegar over tentacles or remove them with a stick. Next, tie a light bandage above and below the sting. After that, splint the stung part and keep it at heart level; as with it too high could cause venom to travel to the heart while with it too low would cause more swelling. Avoid drinking alcohol, taking medi-cines and eating food. Urgently seek medical treat-ment, and if anti-venom is available immediately ap-ply it.

In addition, the following treatments can also be tried for general jellyfish stings. Rinse the stung part with sea water (not fresh water as it will only worsen the symptom). Also, do not apply sun lotion or spirit-based liquid to the affected area. Pour vin-egar into it and lift off the remaining tentacles with a stick; or dust it with flour and carefully scrape off the tentacles with a blunt knife. A cold pack can then be tried next. It the swell persists apply a hydrocortisone eczema cream or any light steroid cream. See a doc-tor.

There are sophisticated suits that offer pro-tection from jellyfish sting. They are available in many of the water sport shops on Phuket. Get one before taking a plunge into the sea.

Mother Nature equipped you with a brain. Do not be outwitted by the lesser, brainless ocean drifters. AL Snow

The Arabs were the first, not only to cultivate coffee but also to begin its trade. By the fifteenth cen-tury, coffee was being grown in the Yemeni district of Arabia and by the sixteenth century it was known in Persia, Egypt, Syria and Turkey.

European travellers to the Near East brought back stories of the unusual dark black beverage. By the 17th century, coffee had made its way to Europe and was becoming popular across the continent.

Coffee

Despite such controversy, in the major cities of England, Austria, France, Germany and Holland, coffee houses were quickly becoming centers of social activity and communication. By the mid-17th century, there were over 300 coffee houses in Lon-don, many of which attracted patrons with common interests, such as merchants, shippers, brokers and artists.

In the mid-1600’s, coffee was brought to New Amsterdam, a location later called New York by the British.

In only 100 years, coffee had established itself as a commodity crop throughout the world. Missionaries and travellers, traders and colonists con-tinued to carry coffee seeds to new lands and cof-fee trees were planted worldwide. Plantations were established in magnificent tropical forests and on rugged mountain highlands. Some crops flourished, while others were short-lived. New nation’s were es-tablished on coffee economies. Fortunes were made and lost. And by the end of the 18th century, coffee had become one of the world’s most profitable ex-port crops.

Coffee shops like the one next to Karon police station will give you a relaxing aroma of the coffee of your choice on your busy days, making you alive and alert all day!

Sea Canoe is always exploring, and new adventures are created every year. We have recently found a new area to explore in southern Thailand, where caves and “hongs” have been reported. If you are interested in joining us on the trip, please contact. [email protected]

We have got many enquiry e-mails from the experienced kayakers asking for “Light Touring Kay-ak” (sit-inside kayak). We are now also able to pro-vide for requested kayak in our kayaking self-paddle programs upon your requirement or even for kayak-ing rent.“Light Touring Kayaks” are suitable for protected coastal and inland waters. These designs are intended for relaxed fun paddling on placid rivers, lakes and sheltered coastal areas.

They are optimized to be as user friendly as possible. The most obvious difference is that they are shorter than other types of touring kayak, mak-ing them easier to handle both on and off the wa-ter. Other features are large cockpits for easy entry and exit, strong stern profiles to boost tracking and cross-sections shaped to maximize initial stability. As with the kayaks in the touring category, the backrests are higher and more supportive than in the sea kayak range, providing increased comfort over long periods of time in the more relaxed, fun and far less demand-

Effective communication within the family provides healthy and wonderful home atmosphere and better relationships between the members of the family. Love, trust, and respect for each other would eventually flourish as family members learn to share their thoughts and concerns. Problems could easily be resolved and conflicts could be avoided. Com-munication, therefore, has a vital role for strong, sat-isfied healthy families affecting marital, parent-child, and sibling relationships.

FAMILY AND RELATIONSHIPSCommunication: The Strength and Success of Family Relationships

Benefits of Healthy Communication

Self-Esteem

Healthy communication in the family fosters better relationship within the family circle. When par-ents will communicate their appreciation and trust to their children, young people tend to prove themselves that they are trustworthy and often develop a positive attitude toward responsibilities of life, open-minded to ideas, and establish self-worth. Once the members of

the family have great satisfaction at home, this will aid them to have a better outlook in life which then be manifested with their dealings with other people in the community, involvement to a good cause, and the success and productivity in their workplace.

Resolving Conflicts

When feelings are effectively communicat-ed, arguments and conflicts could be more manage-able, problems could easily be resolved, and sharing thoughts and ideas openly allows the person to un-load his burdens and cares. With these, problems will be addressed properly and solutions are most likely to surface.

Strong Bonding

Taking time to communicate with family members especially with children who are in need of quality time and guidance from parents would avoid “attention-seeker” related problems. Shocking tac-tics of children and teenagers to get attention from parents could be avoided. Young people who are neglected at home, no words of appreciation and encouragement, usually lost their interest to achieve and be productive in school. Oftentimes, when home fails to address the needs because of lack of time to

communicate, young people tend to find refuge to friends and other company with uncertain values.

Spending time to effectively communicate at home will not only develop the listening skills, but most importantly it will be valued and carried on as children move through their lives. Love, care, and re-spect are the fruits of healthy communication. Values well communicated at home would greatly influence the success of the childre
