No, not what your house cost, or how much your grocery bill is, or how much you pay in taxes….(not to mention the price of gas at Hall’s!)…but the experience of the lake, the beauty of the mountains, swimming, skiing, cocktail cruising with friends or reading on your dock. We are so lucky to share our lake with family and friends as well as members of the greater community.

This year our Lake Rabun Foundation (LRF) will pass the $1,000,000 mark in charitable giving to those in need in Rabun County. For an organization started in 1987 with a $1000 donation for four years to one college bound student, that’s quite an accomplishment! Your huge generosity over the past 24 years has made these gifts possible.

When LRF chose the first recipient, Georgia in-state college tuition was approximately $5500 per year. Now that same education costs approximately $20,000 per year, and we are supporting 5-7 smart capable students to reach the dream of a college education with a $2000 scholarship each year. For many of these families, college for their children, something that we almost take for granted, would be impossible without our support.

We have received county wide recognition for these scholarships, along with the many other donations we make to the needy. The past few winters have been especially difficult for Rabun County residents. Our members responded to the request for help with large quantities of both food and money.

Through the generosity of so many members and the careful stewardship by Director Buz Stone since its inception, the Lake

Rabun Fund has a corpus of $353,000. Your LRA officers are working with Buz to broaden the involvement of additional leaders to assist him as we plan for a renewed focus on giving back and reaching even higher. The Fund will be setting new goals for growing the corpus and reaching out to you, not only for financial support but also for new ideas to make the LRF more valuable and effective in the community.

To that end, please support the Lake Rabun Association and join us for all the activities planned by your Trustees. Thanks to all of you for making another Lake Rabun summer special for so many of us. We look forward to seeing you at the Memorial Day meeting and brunch!

Happy Summer 2011!

Like many of you, I read The Clayton Tribune, when it comes in the mail. But unlike many, I don't stop after the Police Blotter. I scan further into the pages and frequently find a familiar name or face—the name and/or photo of one of our scholarship students—either doing well in college or, after graduation, returning to Rabun County and working in the community. You can be proud of the fact that, since the LRA Foundation started in 1987, we have provided 85 scholarships to Rabun County students to go to college—a total of $592,000. When added to the other charitable and community causes (most recently Celebrate Clayton and Rabun County Little League) the total amount we have “given back” to the community is $962,000, as of December, 2010. This summer, we will pass the $1 million mark. Continue this generos-ity by remembering the Foundation as a part of your charitable giving and estate planning.

Thank you, Buz Stone, Director

Pass In Review:

Where to See the Wooden Boat Parade each 4th of July for the past 32 years, Lake Rabun has celebrated our nation’s birthday

with the Wooden Boat Parade. each year, for the past 7 years, one of the best places to watch has been at the “Pass in Review” (PIR). The PIR began as an answer to a question: “Where is the best place to watch the Wooden Boat Parade?” The obvious answer was at the Methodist Church boat house, AKA “Boat Church”, and another great tradition began.

From the dam, the Wooden Boat Parade processes down alternating sides of the lake year-to-year, but one constant remains—it always passes in front of the Boat Church boat house. Truly, this is the place to be.

With patriotic music playing, folks cheering and clapping, and the spirit of the day fully on display, what’s not to like? This past year, we had about 60 folks, a number of whom are “re-peat customers” who have made the PIR a 4th of July family tradition.

On Sunday the 3rd of July, 2011 the Wooden Boat Parade will kick off at 10:00 AM from the dam. The Boat Church boat house will open for business immediately following the comple-tion of Boat Church. There is no better place to watch; there is no finer group to be with.

Patriotic music, refreshments, and a running narrative of the parade all combine to make the PIR a most special event. Come join us for the 8th annual PIR.

Bring your friends, bring your spirit, and spread the word. No reservations necessary. See you there!

Regards,Alan Price

This year’s theme says what we’re all about—giving back to the community. Our largest fundraiser is rapidly approaching. The 2011 Flea Market and Silent Auction will be held on Saturday, June 18, 2011 from 9:00 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. The one-day event will include: the Bargain Barn, Collector’s Corner, Jewelry, the Grill and Silent Auction items. The evening event will include a catered Cocktail Party and Live Auction beginning at 7 p.m.

It’s time to clean out your attics and basements—please call Thad Warren (404-237-7203) for Atlanta pickup and Kelly Cowan (706-212-0668) for local pickup and storage information. In addition, please consider donating antiques, artwork, vacation homes, special tickets to sporting events or other activities, gift certificates for goods and services, or any other items that would appeal to our lake community. This year we have some exciting new items—a mystery wine grab that consists of 100 bottles of wine, progressive dinners on the lake, a Scrabble night, Braves tickets (3rd row behind the dugout), Thrashers tickets in the glass, UGA football tickets, vacation homes and much more!

This fundraiser takes lots of time, energy and volunteers. Please consider helping in some way and contact Kelly Cowan or Laura Rhodes NOW.

PaddlesThis year’s themed item is paddles,

graciously donated by Hall’s Boathouse. These have been painted, stained, and decorated by our own talented LRA members. Be sure to view all of these on display in the Silent Auction and be ready to bid on that special one for your boathouse or lakehouse.

RaffleThis year’s raffle is a fabulous trip to

Las Vegas—refer to the enclosed flyer for all of the details and buy your raffle tickets NOW! Tickets can be purchased online at www.lakerabun.org.

Bargain BarnThe Bargain Barn will be housed in the

old pavilion at Hall’s Boathouse and will be full of housewares, paperback books, toys, games and bric-a-brac. Come early to get the best selection!

Collector’s CornerThe Collector’s Corner will be located

in the lower level of the pavilion. It will have indoor and outdoor furniture, sporting goods, hardback books, paintings, collectibles and special items of interest.

The GrillGrab lunch and a cold drink while

you’re shopping and bidding. The Grill will be located outside by the front entrance of the pavilion.

JewelryBling at Lake Rabun! The Jewelry

Committee has been working hard preparing for this new addition to the Flea Market. There is a varied assortment of rings, belt buckles, tie clasps and

watches suitable for men, women and children. The collection of earrings (pierced and clip-on), bracelets and necklaces covers the gamut from the young and funky to hidden treasures for ball gowns. Looking for jean jewelry

or sterling? We have it! Need Hawaiian beads and baubles for the next costume party? We can fix you right up! We’re still collecting jewelry. Contact Betsy Bairstow Morse in Atlanta (404-252-2700 or 404-245-5343) or Barbara Roper in Lakemont (706-782-4682 or 404-312-2433) to make arrangements. We’re also providing replacement batteries in watches, repairing broken safety chains and cleaning dull jewelry. Please bring your jewelry donations to the Memorial Day meeting at the pavilion. These are great deals so plan to load up on some rare finds. We have something for everyone.

Cocktail PartyYou will not want to miss the

party of the Summer! The festivities begin at 7 p.m. with an open bar, a tempting catered cocktail buffet, and a new Heads or Tails event. This year we are excited to have fabulous wine donated by Barefoot Wine & Bubbly, beer donated by Sweetwater Brewery, and plenty of liquor for those mixed drinks. Select Silent Auction items will be available for bidding and the Mystery Wine Grab will be offered while you are enjoying cocktails.

Then, a spirited game will kickoff the Live Auction. This year’s Live Auction will offer items like you’ve never seen before! Come ready to eat, drink and bid, bid, bid—all for a great cause. Look for your invitation by mail and an evite in May.

Mark your calendars now for this event. Let’s show the local community what we’re truly about at Lake Rabun and give back to those in need. And, bring your cash, checkbooks, MasterCard and Visa to pay for all of your purchases! Please contact Kelly Cowan ([email protected]) or Laura Rhodes ([email protected]) with any questions and/or to volunteer.

Lake Rabun AssociationHemlock Program

As May is here, our lake area weather is in spring mode. Although many of you have been away from your lake home for the winter, the Hemlock Woolly Adelgids (HWA’s) have remained here and have been ac-tive in your Hemlocks through-out the winter. Thus, the infestation continues to spread.

As is the case in healthcare, early detection and treatment is critical. Spring is the prime treatment season to address the Hemlock in-festation and early, proactive treat-ment will insure that your trees do not join the march to early tree mortality

which can occur within 3 to 6 years of initial infestation.

The first step when you return to the lake is to assess the health of all your Hemlocks. Do you see any of the following?

· White woolly egg sacs on the un-derside of branches?

· Gray-green foliage color?· Premature needle drop and thin-

ning of foliage?· Lack of new green growth and gen-

eral loss of vigor?

· Limb die-back starting from the bottom?

· Significant defoliation?

Your expanded LRA Hemlock facili-tator team stands ready to support you in assessing your Hemlocks and to dis-cuss alternatives for treatment. Con-tact one of them today to schedule a no cost, on-site consultation.

For those of you preferring treat-ment by a professional who specializes in helping Hemlocks, several pre-qual-ified professional service providers are listed at Save Georgia’s Hemlocks. They have agreed to “good neighbor”

rates so tell them you were referred by the Save Georgia’s Hemlocks web site to qualify.

For those preferring the “do-it-your-self” approach, your LRA has pur-chased a soil injector which is avail-able to be borrowed. Look on the LRA website for information and how to reserve the injector.

As well, we now have a local Rabun County retail source where the Imidacloprid chemical used to treat mild to moderate infestation can be

obtained. Reeves Farm & Garden Store located at 149 Mills St. (just off S. Main St.) in Clayton has Prokoz Zenith 75 WSP which is the “Imidacloprid 75% concentration in 1.6 oz. water soluble packets for-mulated to treat HWA’s”. The Zenith product is sold as a package contain-ing four 1.6 oz. packets. The current package price is $39.99. As well, Reeves has also agreed to “special order” the Safari product recommended for ap-plication of heavily infested Hemlocks and large Hemlocks with a 22” diam-eter and greater. To special order, con-tact Russell Garner at Reeves on Mon-

day or Tuesday and your chemical can be available for pick-up on Thursday. Please let them know that we (LRA) appreciate their support in obtaining these products.

While you’re assessing your Hem-locks, also look at your adjoining neighbors’ Hemlocks as well and talk to them in case they are not aware of the infestation.
