The Guadalupe Gardener August 2017
I hope our Master Gardeners are staying cool in the shade, as we see triple digit heat with no rain in the forecast. It is a great time to solarize your garden. Make plans to start your seeds for your cruciferous vegetables and others going into your fall garden.
There is no need to pay for a gym membership; we have several worthy projects ongoing year round. Our approved garden list can be found on VMS. With area schools starting soon, volunteers are needed to mentor teachers with the Jr. Master Garden program Learn, Grow, Eat & Go in the La Vernia and Seguin ISD. Check with our leaders of the community gardens and Red Barn to see how you can help plant and maintain these gardens. Plans are underway for the Guadalupe County Fair to be held October 12-15th. Sign up soon. The Veterans Memorial Park is seeing progress. Our Class 30 starts August 8th, and members can attend for continuing education. Our board election is around the corner too. Ask yourself, “Is it time for me to step up to the plate and be an officer?” “Can I dedicate one year of my time to Master Gardeners?”

Upcoming Meeting Speakers
Thursday, August 17th - Brian and Shirley Loflin will speak to us on native grasses. He and his wife, Shirley, have published 3 books and will have them on sale after the talk. They will talk about the im-portance of grasses on the carbon and water cycles, itsimportance to wildlife, and its use in soil stabiliza-tion and land restoration.
Thursday, September 21st- Minnette Marr from the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center will speak to us on seed collecting and seed banks. Minnette is a plant conservationist and curates the herbarium and the seed bank at the Wildflower Center. This will be great information for all of us who got excited about seed collecting after watching the Seed movie.
Thursday, October 19th - Our own Jerry McNulty will speak to us on plant propagation in preparation of our March/April 2018 plant sales.

Ongoing Volunteer Opportunities
Every Monday the MG office/library is open from 8:30am-noon except for holidays. Volunteers are always needed. Contact Betty Hughes at 830-401-4066 or e-mail [email protected].
Join GCMG volunteers at the Veteran’s Memorial Park in Marion every Monday from 8:00 am - 11:00 am.
The park is located next to the Schulz Nursery parking lot. Contact Joyce Friesenhahn at 210-452-2404 or email [email protected].
Every Tuesday and Friday are work days at the Guadalupe County Community Garden. Check with Ann Odvody at [email protected] or 210-994-9664 for start hour and access at other times.
Master Gardeners meet every Thursday, and every Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to around noon until further notice at the Gutierrez Xeriscape Park, 1231 Borgfeld Rd, Schertz for tree pruning, weeding, mulching, superstar plant bed creation, and general plant/park maintenance etc. Bring water, sun protection, gloves, tools, and a team attitude. Native Plant Society Offers Ideas for a Mail Box Garden
Every Texas gardener has a dry, sunny, empty spot - sometimes out by the mail box or a lamp post. What will grow there? To give a home curbside appeal, the Guadalupe chapter of the Native Plant Society of Texas has recommendations for a Mail Box Garden. These colorful and hardy native plants are suited to our region, easy to maintain and very drought-tolerant. Just be sure to leave the mail box approach clear for the mail carrier. Red Yucca (Hesperaloe parviflora) is a tough Texas shrub with tall red blooms like flying flags. Barbados Cherry (Maipighia glabra) is a native that sounds exotic but grows wild from Texas to the Caribbean. Its pink flowers and red berries will cheer up any entrance. Bright yellow Zexmenia (Wedelia hispida) will add summer-long blooms. Mexican Feathergrass (Nassella tenuissima) is a bunch grass that doesn't need mowing. It makes silvery-green mounds and feathery stalks in any hot, sun-filled location. Free brochures depicting the Mail Box Garden, its spacing and care, are now available at Maldonado Nursery and The Green Gate in Seguin and at Schulz Nursery in Marion. These nurseries participate in the Native Plant Society's NICE program promoting native plants instead of common exotics. The Native Plant Society of Texas is a statewide non-profit organization dedicated to promoting native plant research, preservation and use through local chapters around the state. The Guadalupe County Fair will be held October 12-15, 2017. We are collecting supplies for the arts and craft projects. We need: toilet paper rolls for binoculars, tin cans for fire flies, and red caps for lady bugs. Tin cans (15 oz. or smaller) must have the label removed and washed clean. Red caps from milk (such as Oak Farms or WalMart brand) must be washed clean. These caps must be the screw on type. Toilet paper rolls and red caps can be dropped off with Carol Calentine or left at the MG office. Tin cans be left at the storage shed in the tub. Thanks so much for your assistance. We’re really having fun in The Guadalupe Master Gardeners Facebook Group. So many photos of beautiful flowers, garden critters, helpful ideas, and inspirational projects. We’re up to 108 members and we’ve got lots of room for more!
This month Peggy Jones wowed us with some great pictures from the IMGC she attended in Portland, OR. It sure looked nice and cool there and all the beautiful flowers! Speaking of flowers, Jerry McNulty had some great photos this last month and you should see his produce and cute garden toads! Another visiting critter was a beautiful Swallowtail Butterfly that Kim Tessanne shared. Mary Miller continues to give us uplifting messages to inspire us. We’ve had lots of plant and tree problem questions come in. We really need more Master Gardeners to help with the public’s problem plants, hint, hint....
A new feature we’ve been playing with for the Guadalupe Master Gardeners Facebook Group is videos of live streaming at the Seguin Farmer’s Market on Saturday mornings at the Silver Center on Court Street. You can watch it live at 7:55 am to see the fresh produce available that day, or sleep in and take a peek at the video later, but don’t wait too long, the produce and farm fresh eggs are usually gone by 11:00 am.
We’d love to see your photos too, it’s very easy to join. All you need to do is log into Facebook and in the search box type “Guadalupe County Master Gardeners,” the Group will show up, click on it and request to join, you’re guaranteed to be approved. Still need help joining? Just give me a call at (830) 379-7203 or e-mail me at [email protected] and I’d be happy to walk you through the procedure for joining the group or even how to create your new account for Facebook, all questions are welcome.

Botanical Cactus Garden, Henderson, Nevada The Wandering Gardener
Marilyn Moltz I became aware of this garden in 2009 when I attended the IMGC in Las Vegas. This is part of Ethel M Chocolate Factory. It is a 3 acre garden which is half cacti and succulents and half desert trees and shrubs. It is well laid out with almost everything labeled. It has wide paved walkways and is easy for any level of mobility. There are benches to sit and enjoy your surroundings throughout the garden. The garden has over 350 species, from the large Sonora Desert Saguaro to small desert floor cacti species. They have names like Beaver Tail, Hedgehog and Teddy Bear. There are the colorful shrubs Baja Fairy Duster and Pride of Barbados. We were there two weeks after the cacti had bloomed but the garden still had color with the pink and purple prickly pear and barrel cactus with its colorful thorns. If you are in Las Vegas and want a peaceful walk, this is the place to go. The address says Henderson, but it is only 20 minutes from the strip. I saw pictures of it during the holidays and they wrap the trees and plants in lights for the city to come and see (people wrapping thorny plants with lights—that would be something to see). This is a free garden and don’t forget that it is next door to the Ethel M Chocolate factory. There is a free tour of the chocolate factory and a store which sells some very tasty souvenirs.

International Master Gardener Conference 2017 The Wandering Gardener

The International Master Gardener Conference was held July 10-14 in Portland Oregon. This was my fifth (and possibly my last) conference. As with any 5 day conference there will be things you like and those you don’t. By Friday it was really a long week for a retired person not used to sitting all day in seminars. If you have not been to a conference, either state, regional or international, I wholly encourage you to attend one. These conferences offer much to see and do and you get to meet gardeners from all over the country and see what their clubs are doing, which I find very interesting. Portland is a city with much to offer. There were pre, during and post conference tours. They offered tours to go west to the Pacific Ocean, Astoria, lighthouses, east to the Columbia Gorge area, or you could do half or full day tours around Portland. The tours gave you the chance to visit home gardens that you otherwise would not have access to, local nurseries and their behind the scene work, or public areas around Portland. These include the International Rose Test Garden, Lan SU Chinese Garden, brewery blocks, the Eco district, waterfront district and more. The seminars covered many subjects with 3 seminar times offered each day with 5 subjects you could pick from each time. The seminars were 1-1 3/4 hours long. Most of the ones I attended were very informative. The speakers were local and from across the country. The IMGC is only held every 2 years. 2019 will be held in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania on June 15-21. I understand they will be going to Longwood Gardens which is one of my favorites!

Christian Cupboard Community Garden Update

We are making great progress at the Cupboard Community Garden. I wish I had taken some “before” pictures so you could see the jungle that was most of the garden. We removed a bunch of wild 15 ft. tall sunflowers, moved and reduced a compost pile that was too deep to turn and had huge pieces of material that was probably going to take a decade to compost, laid out some new beds and moved soil into them.
I need to clarify who “we” is. There are 3 or 4 Master Gardeners who have been working on this but a huge thanks goes to a group of high school kids on a mission trip. The parents of Mike Ceyanes, the Youth Director of the Abiding Faith Lutheran Church in San Antonio, volunteer at the Cupboard. Each year when he takes them his young people on a mission trip they spend a day helping at the Cupboard. This year about half of the 22 young people worked with us in the garden. It would have taken us weeks to get done what they were able to accomplish in a morning. As a result of their efforts, except for some tilling, we are ready to plant the beds for the fall.
The Master Gardeners working at the Cupboard Community Garden have also donated a hose reel and a shed in which to store the tools.
Our next steps are to till and plant the beds. Also to start some container gardens. There is a concrete area (once a foundation for a garage) that gets great sun, so we plan to use it for container gardens/demonstrations. We are not scheduling a “work day”. This is a perfect project for people whose schedule doesn’t allow them to work with the other MG projects. If you would like to come claim a section to plant & maintain – either bed or containers or would like to just come weed, etc. feel free to do so. This Fantastic Beautiful
A garden movie review

This Fantastic Beautiful is an enchanting English movie starring a lovely young actress, Jessica Brown
Findlay, in the title role of Bella Brown.
The movie opens with baby Bella being raised by a family of geese. Yes, some of the story is a bit odd,
but the themes are universal.
Where does the garden part come in? About a third of the way into the story, we discover that, while
budding writer Bella keeps a perfect home, her garden has fallen into ruin. The landlord pays a visit and
informs Bella that she is in violation of her lease agreement due to the condition of her garden. She must
restore it or face eviction in 30 days. Bella is afraid of nature (maybe because of her early upbringing), but
she wants to keep her home. Thus, we follow her as she rejuvenates her garden and her lonely life.
Bella acquires a male housekeeper following his dispute with her grumpy, meddling next door neigh-
bor. Because the housekeeper is a fabulous cook, the neighbor becomes Bella's garden mentor in ex-
change for meals.
I won't divulge more of the plot, but it has several interesting characters and two beautiful gardens. If you
watch PBS or Harry Potter movies, some of the actors will be familiar to you.
The movie has a five star Amazon rating. I rented it on Dish TV, but you can find it on other streaming
outlets or get the DVD.

up the review so we can share it in the newsletter.

Continuing Education Opportunities for 2018 Recertification
2017 is flying by. It’s hard to believe we are more than halfway through the year. In order to recertify as a Master Gardener for 2018 you must 1) complete a minimum of twelve (12) hours of volunteer service and six (6) hours of continuing education earned in 2017, 2) report your completed hours in our online Volunteer Management System (VMS) and 3) pay your $20 dues not later than 31 Dec 2017. We will begin collecting dues at the October membership meeting for members who have met the 2018 requirement.
For several of us, completing 6 hours of Continuing Education is a challenge due to work requirements, family concerns and health issues impacting our available time. If you fall into this category, now is the perfect time to start thinking about how you will fulfill your Continuing Education Requirement.
As of August, we have 4 membership meetings left in which you can earn 1 Continuing Education hour per monthly membership meeting by attending the speaker portion of the program.

Iris Seale Wins July Volunteer Recognition Drawing
19 Certified Master Gardeners qualified for the July Volunteer Recognition Program Drawing. Congratulations to Iris Seale who won a $20 gift certificate to Maldonado’s Nursery.
All 19 also qualify for one entry into the $150 Annual Recognition Drawing.
To qualify for the Monthly Volunteer Recognition Program drawing, Certified Guadalupe County Master Gardeners must report a minimum of 5 volunteer hours earned during the month in VMS by the last calendar day of the month. Hours earned for attendance at the monthly GCMG Membership Meeting are not included in the minimum 5 hours, except those earned for meeting setup. Board members do not participate in the Volunteer Recognition Program.
Don’t forget to earn and report your hours by 31 August 2017 to be eligible for the September Membership Drawing.
