TAKE THE TIME TO STRETCHOver time, with age and poor pos-tures, we lose flexibility, strength, and circulation in our joints and muscles. Sitting or standing for too long causes undue stress on the lower back, hips, knees, and shoulders. The average American sits for 14.5 hours a day! Often our jobs cause up to maintain awkward

sustained postures which often result in physical pain. Our workplace stretching theory is about short, frequent stretches. A 5 to 10 second hold is all you need to get increased joint synovial fluid, stimulate stretch receptors, and increase blood and nutrient supply. This will help to reverse the daily awkward postures and lead to many other benefits such as: increased flexibility, increased circulation, better posture, stress relief, enhanced coordination, and injury prevention. If you are interested in incorporating workplace stretching into your daily routine, please click here to find the Stretching Poster.

If you would like the Stretching Poster for your department, please contact Kay Willard at [email protected]. If you would like additional information on stretching in the workplace, contact Ashton DeMoss, Wellness Coordinator, at [email protected].

Chris Rew, a former ICU associate, was recently stationed in Afghanistan and sent a flag to the ICU staff as a token of appreciation. On September 11, he visited the unit for an official presentation of the framed flag and certificate. Although not on the same mission, Allen Emergency Department associate Mike

Nelsestuen was in the same unit at the time. Chris is now studying for a Master’s degree in microbiology at UNI.

The note reads: “Allen Hospital ICU Staff, thanks for taking care of me and continuing to teach me more about the medical world for the year in between my deployments. The enclosed flag was flown with me in my gear during medevac mission MM(W)05-13A. On the mission one Afghan soldier was transported to Zafar Hospital near Herat, Afghanistan. He was badly wounded by an IED. The patient survived transport. I hope you will except this flag as a token of my gratitude.” -SPC Christopher Rew 68W1F3

We Appreciate You!Internal Medicine hosted a potluck for Dwight Tisue for the great job he did in repainting their work space. They also send out their thanks to Terry Flynn for getting them so quickly on the schedule, Greg Molnar and his team for working on some additional projects.

I would like to thank everyone who had the honor to care for

my mother, Mary Cole. Mom had surgery on August 15 and

passed on August 25. Mom was here for 10 days and had the special care and the special touch from so

many of your caring hands.

I wanted to give a huge thank you to Dr. Tony and Dr. Kantamneni (she loved these two), the whole crew of MICU ( seven days), 3 Medical (three days). Pastoral Care, Sederick, you were awesome and came almost every day for prayer which she enjoyed, as well as listening to the CD’s that you lent her. Thank you to Russ Nesbit for visiting with her and praying with her. She loved the cafeteria group who made her smile every single day, especially Kenny. It is funny how just bringing her meal made such a difference in her stay here. It made her feel that Allen was family too.

She hated dialysis, but loved the ladies who spent so much time and long hours with her, 8 out of the ten days. And to my home away from home, Distribution Center and Materials Management group! Thank you for all the love, support, visits, cards, donations, flowers, work coverage, prayers, encouragement, honor and respect you showed for Mom and myself. I appreciated all the friends, co-workers and other departments who stopped me in the hall with hugs and concerns. I could not have gotten through this without you, and still need you with the road ahead of me. We all have a story, but we are Allen and we are family. Thank you and God bless you all, Tammie and Mary Cole
