NURSING PROGRAM

NURSING EXPERIENCE IN THE PHILIPPINES

(A STUDY ABROAD COURSE)

Course Description: PH 300 Nursing Experience in the Philippines

This course will be conducted in the Philippines and will focus on the nursing practice,

health care systems, and baccalaureate nursing education in the Philippines. The areas of

nursing practice that will be focused are Medical-surgical, Pediatric, Obstetric and

Community Health Nursing. Experiences will be based on caring communication across

cultures. The course will include lectures and actual clinical experience. There will be

tours of health care facilities in different settings of nursing practice.

Class size: 13 students

Pre-requisite: Completion of Junior level nursing courses.

Concurrent enrollment in Transcultural Experience in the Philippines.

There is NO LANGUAGE REQUIREMENT. Most Filipinos speak

English quite well.

Date: 3 weeks May 14 - June 6, 2020

Course Credit and Requirements: 2 credit hours nursing elective. (19 didactic hours &

58 clinical/lab hours)

Goals for the course:

1. To explore nursing practice in the Philippines.

2. To experience caring and communicating with patients from a Transcultural

perspective.

3. To work with clients experiencing illness conditions and communicable diseases

more likely to be associated with tropical environments.

4. To work with Filipino mothers during labor & delivery and with neonates and

their mothers during the post-partum stage.

Expectations of Nursing Students:

Participation in all pre-trip classes is essential.

Communicable Disease Presentation (20 minutes)

Clinical Expectations:

Preclinical preparations for each clinical experience:

1. review of procedures

2. review cases of assigned patients

Journal entry for each clinical rotation.

Adhere to Standard Precautions for Infection Control according to the

policy of the Truman State University Department of Nursing.

Clinical uniforms according to the agreement with the overseas school of

nursing.

Participation in each rotational post-conference.

Clinical Experiences: Students will be rotated in OB/DR, Pediatrics, Nursery,

Medical-Surgical and Community Health Nursing.

Group Project: All participants of the Transcultural Experience will develop, as a

team, a poster/video/oral presentation of their experiences for faculty, classmates,

and the Truman State University community.

TRANSCULTURAL EXPERIENCE IN THE PHILIPPINES

(A STUDY ABROAD COURSE)

Course Description: PHI 301 Transcultural Experience in the Philippines

This course will be conducted in the Philippines and will focus on cross-cultural

differences between the student’s culture and Philippine culture. The specific context of

culture will focus on communication patterns and health care systems in the Philippines.

Experiences will be based on caring communication across cultures. The course will

include lectures and practicum experience. There will be tours of health care facilities.

Insight into the Philippine culture will be gained by visiting major historical sites,

recreational facilities and practicum experiences interacting with Filipinos and their

families. This course is intended to meet the LSP requirement for the Intercultural

Interconnecting Perspective.

Class size: 13 students

Pre-requisite: Concurrent enrollment in Nursing Experience in the Philippines.

There is NO LANGUAGE REQUIREMENT. Most Filipinos speak

English quite well.

Date: May 14 - June 6, 2020

Perspectives) (31 didactic hours & 38 practicum hours)

Goals for the course: 1. Develop a greater understanding of cultural diversity through the examination of

one’s own and Filipino cultures. (LSP Objective)

2. To explore the political and social ends of culture as manifested by utilization of

the health care systems in the Philippines. (LSP Objective)

3. To experience caring communications with Filipinos from a Transcultural

perspective.

4. To develop cultural competence during interactions with Filipinos.

Program Costs

Financial Aid: Most students are eligible for one of the following loans:

Truman State University Cultural Development Loans which have 0%

interest until graduation. Obtain further information from the financial

aid office at the University (MC103).

Endowed scholarships are available, watch for applications.

The program cost of _________ includes the following:

1. Air travel from Kansas International Airport/ St. Louis Airport to Iloilo, Philippines

and return from Iloilo to Kansas/ St Louis International Airport.

2. All transportation within Iloilo and to clinical facilities.

3. All lodging in Iloilo (typically 2-3 people in a room)

4. A pack lunch during clinical days.

5. Admission to all recreational and cultural sites and tours.

6. Recreational trips planned during the weekend.

7. Travel Insurance.

What IS NOT included in the program cost.

1. Meals when not in clinical. These costs will be minimized by purchasing food at local

supermarkets.

2. Passport costs (if you do not have one) approx. $100.00.

3. Recommended immunizations.

4. Truman State University tuition and fees _______ - all students pay in-state tuition

rate (5 credits) and _________ per credit course fee.

5. Personal expenses (phone calls, postcards, stamps, shopping, etc.) and free-time

activities.

6. Clinical uniforms (may use scrub uniform and tennis shoes bring extra clean shoes for

labor delivery/ OR experiences, purple polo and khaki pants/ shorts for community)

Students must apply and be accepted to the program. A non-refundable deposit of _____

Tentative Itinerary (Summer 2020):

Friday, May 14; Meet in St. Louis International Airport, fly to Iloilo City,

Philippines

May 16 (Saturday): Arrived in Iloilo City, Philippines Check in hotel. Go to the

store to get things you might need.

May 17(Sunday) Go out and familiarize the surroundings

May 18 (Monday)

Morning, Orientation to West Visayas State University

(8:00am-5pm) Bring name tag.

Be at the lobby at 7:30 am.

Afternoon, Asilo de Molo (Gerontological Nursing)

May 19 (Tuesday)

Morning, Social Hygiene Clinic (Gynecological Nursing)

Afternoon, Western Visayas Sanitarium(Communicable Disease Nursing)

May 20 (Wednesday) WVSUMC Pediatric Ward (Pediatric Nursing)

May 21 (Thursday) WVSUMC Medical Ward (Adult Health Nursing)

May 22 (Friday) Community Health Nursing

May 23 (Saturday): Boat trip to Guimaras Island (weather allows).

Bring swim suits, snorkeling equipment or underwater goggles,

sunscreen, water and snacks. Be at the lobby at 7:00 am. This is a whole

day sight seeing activity, we do not come back until 5-6 pm that evening

or later.

May 24 (Sunday): Free time enjoy your free time during the trip

May 25-29 (Monday to Friday): Clinical rotations in DR, OR, ICU

May 30 (Saturday): Trip to Garin Farm and sight seeing.

May 31 (Sunday): Free time, enjoy your free time during the trip

June 1 (Monday): Emergency Room Rotation

June 2 (Tuesday): WVSUMC Surgical Ward

Closing ceremony in the evening

June 3 (Wednesday): Trip to Boracay Island. We leave at 4:00 am.

Try to pack the night before.

We can store our luggage in a pre-arrange place.

June 3- June 5 (Wednesday to Friday) Enjoy Boracay Island.

June 5 (Friday): Return to Iloilo City. We leave Boracay Island at 12nn.

June 6 (Saturday): Flight to Manila; Return flight to the United States.

Things to Bring!

1. Passport (Do not lose or loan this to anyone.)

2. Insect spray with DEET (may share with classmates)

3. Uniforms, shoes, name tag, stethoscope, scissors, penlight

4. Scrub uniforms and exra “clean” shoes or sandals for OB & DR rotations

5. Lab coat (white)

6. Leisure reading, playing cards, or personal diversions during plane trip

7. Beach towel, face towel

8. Personal care items, toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, 1 roll toilet paper,

tampons or sanitary napkins (no tampons in pharmacies or stores)

9. Summer clothes – light materials (temperature on the 80-90’s may even be 100oF)

10. 1 water bottle in which you can carry with you during the trips – can be refilled

11. Underwater camera if you want

13. 1 notebook for journal (electronic journal is preferable)

our luggage will be delayed in arriving at our destination.
