PHILANTHROPY REPORT 2015
The Cedars Philanthropy Report 2015.indd 1 6/17/15 11:28 AM
The role that The Cedars has played in greater Portland’s senior health care for the past nine decades has never been more important. We have been recognized as the preferred provider of living options and services to seniors in greater Portland. We have accomplished this by responding to community needs and advances in our field, and balancing social and economic objectives. This has made it possible for us to maintain and enhance
our quality of service and fiscal health, and attract, retain and develop relationships with stakeholders committed to our mission.
As one of the earliest proponents for the patient-directed care model in New England, The Cedars provides housing and integrated, seamless health care, while empowering seniors to make choices about how they want to live and receive care. Our full continuum of senior living services includes independent living, assisted living, rehabilitation, skilled nursing care, and community-based services. Today, we are not only one of the largest independent, nonprofit senior living communities in northern New
England; we are widely recognized as among the best and most innovative.
Our commitment to innovation and quality has been enhanced by the development of key partnerships throughout the acute care community. These partnerships ensure that older patients receive appropriate care from the best resources. Through collaboration among our care teams, community partners, families, and seniors, we have been demonstrating how delivering the right mix of services, at the right time, can promote healthy aging.
By 2030, more than one quarter of Maine’s population will be age 65 or older. As we prepare for this “silver tsunami”, the need to collaborate with other organizations through new partnerships and networks will grow. We believe the steps we are taking now to prepare for this momentous change in demand for eldercare services will put us in the lead to address these most critical issues affecting Maine and the country. For us to succeed in expanding possibilities for aging, our efforts must encompass many areas including leadership, advocacy, philanthropy, innovation, imagination, credibility, and a drive for continued excellence.
The Cedars offers state-of-the art healthcare with cutting edge services and technology, and a compassionate, highly trained staff. Our long history of success gives us the experience necessary to positively impact how seniors age now and in the future. We look forward to working with our many partners in the health care and educational community, volunteer leadership, and our donors to offer innovative health care for seniors today and tomorrow.
Our donors are an extremely important component of our success. With every gift, you are making life better for our seniors. Thank you to each individual, company and foundation listed on these pages. Your donations are helping to redefine the experience of aging and we are very proud and grateful to recognize our donors.

A Gift Made in GratitudeHenni Polak (1920 - 2015)
Henni Polak was an exceptional woman who
lived her life fully. In 2000, she became one of the
pioneer members of The Atrium, then a brand-new
independent living community at The Cedars. Henni’s
fifteen years here were a very exciting and active
time in her life. She enjoyed swimming and numerous
enrichment activities, and was an enthusiastic,
engaged member of our community.
Henni was born in Mannheim, Germany and her childhood in Germany was
made very difficult by the rise of the Nazis. One of her first experiences with
anti -Semitism was when one of her school teachers instructed the class on
the racial inferiority of Jews. She contradicted him with the bravery that was a
hallmark of her life, forcefully refuting the aspersions before the entire class.
In 1940, Henni and her mother, along with all the Jews in the upper Rhine area,
were deported to the Gurs Concentration Camp in in the French Pyrenees. She
got out of Gurs with the help of Abbé Alexandre Glasberg, a Catholic priest
who was born Jewish. Her freedom was short-lived. She was re-arrested by
French authorities and placed in another concentration camp, Les Milles, near
Marseilles. Her mother, left behind in Gurs, was eventually transported to her
death in Auschwitz. Henni escaped Les Milles by climbing over the barbed wire
with a mattress. All those remaining behind were eventually sent to Auschwitz.
Henni survived the rest of WWII in France with the help of Arthur Schneirer,
the father of her eldest son, Raymond, and with false identity papers given to
her by the French Resistance. Arthur died in 1945. After the war ended, Henni
went to Paris where she met and married Bernard Polak, her husband of many
years, and had a second son, Marcel.
She and her family immigrated to New York in 1953, settling in Brooklyn
and then the Rockaways in Queens. Like many immigrants, she worked in
a garment factory sewing labels into sweaters. But education was critically
important to Henni, and by earning her high school equivalency diploma she
was able to get a clerical job in an insurance company.
“Her years at The Atrium were some of the happiest of her life,” explains her
son Marcel Polak. When Henni died on April 5, 2015 at the age of 94, she and
family gave a bequest to The Cedars in appreciation for those happy years.

Giving Maine Seniors a Voice
The White House
Conference on Aging
(WHCOA) convened a
series of invitation-only
regional forums to engage
with seniors, families,
caregivers and leaders
on key issues affecting
older Americans. When it
comes to issues affecting
seniors in the Northeast,
The Cedars is always part
of the conversation.
Kathryn Callnan, President
and CEO, brought her keen
insight, experience and
passion for senior issues
to the Boston Forum this
spring to help shape the
agenda of the national
conference in Washington,
DC scheduled for later
this year.
The WHCOA has been
held once a decade since
1961, and charts the
course of the debate on
aging policy in Congress
for the coming decade.

The Gift of Award-Winning Leadership
Leading Age Maine and
New Hampshire singled
out a dynamic leader at
The Cedars this spring,
when Angela Hunt,
Chief Operating Officer,
received the Excellence in
Leadership Award.
Angie earned this honor
through her celebrated
work and unwavering
commitment to our
seniors, our staff and our
nonprofit community.
In her 15 years at
The Cedars, she has
developed innovative
programs, forged new
partnerships, advocated
for seniors in Augusta,
and established an all-
inclusive, extraordinary
work culture at The
Cedars that inspires our
direct care staff.
Giving a New Perspective on 90
What’s so different
about being ninety? Ask
nonagenarians at The
Cedars, and they openly
share the life changes
this milestone creates.
Many responsibilities
are now behind them,
and new priorities and
interests have opened
up. “Celebrating Nine
Decades” at The Cedars
convenes members over
age 90 every Monday to
share their thoughts.
The vibrancy of this group
has generated a lot of
excitement (and even a
bit of envy) from those in
their 70s and 80s! That’s
what life at The Cedars
can do: change the very
way Maine seniors look
at aging, and embrace
all it can offer in wisdom,
wellness and joy. * of blessed memory

Isn’t it amazing
how one song can
immediately take you
back to a specific
place or time in your
past? Do you ever turn
on a favorite song to
change your mood?
Even for seniors
living with dementia, music remains a powerful portal
between the past and the present. Familiar melodies
help find lost memories, calm agitation and aggression,
and connect patients to the here and now.
Over 37,000 Mainers are living with dementia, and
that number is expected to nearly double in the next
five years. That’s why The Cedars is leading the way
in developing effective and innovative programming
for seniors with dementia. This year, we became the
first skilled nursing center in Maine to implement the
national Music and Memory program.
Nick Viti, Life Enrichment Director at The Cedars, can
unleash the magic of music on a moment’s notice.
Working with patients and family members, Nick
creates custom playlists for a library of iPods that are
available whenever a patient needs them.
“One patient would call out for her father, who passed
away many years ago. She told us he had a lovely
baritone singing voice, so now, when she calls for him,
we play songs he used to sing by vocalists that sound
like he did,” Nick explains. “We turn her anxiety about his
absence into happy reminiscing through music.”

the lives of seniors? See Patty Wight’s story on

The Gift of Music is the Gift of Memory A Call to Give
Since 1996, The
Cedars Auxiliary’s
Annual Phonathon has
raised over $175,000
for essential medical
equipment and lifestyle
enhancements for our
seniors in skilled care.
The 2014 Phonathon
raised $15,000 from
102 generous donors
to purchase a Philips
wireless call system,
which eliminates
institutional call bell noise,
increases response time,
helps with fall prevention.
In 2015, 103 donors
contributed $15,000
to fund equipment
purchases and training
for a new program called
“Opening Minds through
Music and Art,” to begin
a new art program and
further enhance our Music
and Memory program
(see sidebar at left).

Gifts to The Cedars Auxiliary May 1, 2014 - April 30, 2015 A Long Life and a Lasting LegacyMyer Marcus (1915—2015)
June 23, 2014 was a very special day—the day Myer Marcus celebrated his 100th
birthday. Myer prided himself on his health. Each time he went for a check-up he
happily reported, “my doctor tells me I’m in great shape for my age. There is nothing
wrong with me.” At the age of 90, when Myer moved to independent living at The
Atrium at The Cedars, he was still a practicing attorney. In fact, when he retired at
age 92, he was the oldest practicing attorney in Maine (and he often lamented that he
retired too young). He credited “hanging out with young people” for his longevity and
good health.
Myer Marcus and his family have a long history with The Cedars, dating all the way back to the beginning of
our organization. Myer’s mother was part of the original Auxiliary, the group of women who collected nickels to
build the Jewish Home for Aged which opened in 1929. In 1991 The Jewish Home for Aged moved to its new
location and became The Cedars. Myer continued in his mother’s path, and had a long life with The Cedars. He
was a dedicated board member who unselfishly gave his time, treasure and talent during his 25-year term as a
trustee and later an emeritus trustee. He always came to board meetings well prepared and was very adept at
reading financial statements.
He had an unwavering dedication to helping to make The Cedars the best that it could be. He was pleased
to see all of the progress and changes that the organization that his mother had helped to build had gone
through. For instance, he enjoyed watching the construction of The Osher Inn and was excited when it opened.
During the time that Myer’s wife, Fran, was a resident in long-term care at the Hoffman Center at The Cedars,
Myer became part of The Cedars family. When he visited Fran, he made his rounds visiting the staff and other
residents. Kathy Callnan, President and CEO of The Cedars, has wonderful memories of visiting on the patio
with Myer; Fran; their children, Joanie, Paul, and Don; and his many grandchildren.
After his wife’s death, Myer came to live at The Atrium. He was very proud of his new home and the long
history of the organization, and he often invited his friends to visit so that he could show off The Cedars. His
enjoyment of walking and meeting people continued until the end of his life. He was well-known for his wit and
intelligence throughout all three buildings of The Cedars community and was frequently heard to ask, “Is there
anything new happening?” Myer loved to share stories of growing up in Portland, his service in Army Air Corps
during WWII, and his time at Bowdoin College.
Myer was a man of all seasons at The Cedars: a trustee, family member, resident and donor. As a reflection of
his pride and commitment to our organization, when Myer died on March 2, 2015 at the age of 100, he left a
bequest to The Cedars.

The Cedars Volunteer
of the Year 2014 is
front desk receptionist
Jim Bickford. He has
entertained our residents
with weekly sing-a-longs
at the piano for eight
years.
A retired school teacher,
Jim began this effort
playing for a relative in
The Skilled Care Center.
He drew a crowd from
the first notes. When
his beloved family
member passed, the
music became a tribute
to his memory—and a
Wednesday tradition.
Today, residents get their
hair done before “Piano
with Jim,” and choose
just the right outfits. It’s
always a full house, a
scene of singing, laughter,
tears and gratitude.

Championing extraordinary care Created in response to member, resident and family interest in recognizing staff excellence, The Cedars Care
Champions program lets you thank that special person at The Cedars for making a difference in your life or
the life of a loved one. A Care Champion can be anyone who has made your loved one’s stay at The Cedars
more pleasant – a nurse, CNA, therapist, or any other employee.
By making a tax-deductible gift to The Cedars, you can honor your chosen caregivers and recognize a
commitment that a person or entire staff has made to exceptional care. Staff members will receive a
special letter of recognition from Kathryn Callnan, President and CEO, and a custom-designed badge
to wear proudly each day while continuing the work that touches so many in our community.
