EDITORIAL

With renewed energy we are enthused to bring to you a fresh issue of PHARMAVOICE; the first issue for the academic year 2016-17. It is rightly said that “The more the positive energy that is put in, the more is received” That is what happened in the very first year of ‘PHARMAVOICE’, and hence, we, the committee are more than happy to enlighten you about the current scenario in the noble profession of Pharmacy and how the col-lege is taking its steps towards being a ‘mark of excellence’ Recently, the National Pharmacy Week celebra-tions, organized by various Pharmacy colleges in association with Indian Pharmaceutical Associa-tion, were held. Unwavering support from the faculty and enthusiasm of students brought home both (UG and PG) ‘General Championship’ tro-phies! 12 It is health that is real wealth and not pieces of gold and silver .

DID YOU KNOW: ORAL CONTRACEPTIVES

Recently, from March 15, 2016, Indian drug au-thorities have banned a list of 344 combination drug, of which, many of them were available as OTCs with famous and reliable brand names. Why this step was taken is an important point we should know since we, being the biggest market for ag-gressively marketed OTC products, were being af-fected by these products.

Combination drugs are basically the products which contain two or more active ingredients in a suitable combination. The ingredients are intended to show synergistic effect on the same disease or disorder, ideally with different ways of acting on the body and are should have different properties related to spreading into the body and getting at proper site through blood flow.

Basically, such products are formed to provide dif-ferent ways of treating a disease or a combination of diseases by using single dosage form that is, a tablet or a syrup. Ultimate aim of these products is to improve patient compliance and encourage the patient to stick to the therapy. The products have been proved immensely beneficial in TB, AIDS, treatment, to some extent in diabetes and hyperten-sion which come hand in hand in some patients, where patient adherence to the therapy is of utmost importance.

Then what leads us to avoid such a useful idea? The answer has several aspects.

1. The combination of these drugs is fixed in a giv-en tablet and cannot be altered to suit the specific requirements of every patient, hence does not provide flexibility in therapy. Therefore, the number of patients actually needing the product narrows down, but due to availability and aggres-sive marketing they are prescribed even when not needed. This is irrational use of the combination drugs. This happens in case of OTC products al-so. For example,

2. Phenylephrine + paracetamol + caffeine, Citre-zine + paracetamol + caffeine, Paracetamol + phenylephrine + chlorphenera-mine + dextromethorphan + caffeine. These com-binations were being sold OTC as nasal decon-gestives and common cold remedies.
