AdaptabilityThe PGL5 is available in 8 basic light patterns for completeapplication flexibility.
Ceilings – While no specific recommendationsexist for ceilings, it is widely accepted thatceilings must be well lighted to eliminate theinsecure feeling of entering a dark, cave-likestructure. To accomplish this, between 12%-15%of the luminaire’s output must be projected upward.
A Universal ParkingGarage Luminaire
Since Kim Lighting invented the first true Parking GarageLuminaire in 1988, we havecontinuously refined, reinvented, and redefined the art of parkinggarage lighting. The PGL5 isKim’s fourth generation ofparking garage luminaires, andactually combines all the featuresof the first three generationsinto one incredible lightinginstrument.
The PGL5 not only improves theapplication flexibility of theprevious models, it is easier toinstall and maintain. No matterwhat the lighting criteria:Horizontal Illumination, VerticalIllumination, Cutoff, or LightTrespass, the PGL5 canprovide the solution. Simplystated, the PGL5 makes allother parking garage luminairesobsolete.

Durability
Hydroformed UpperReflectorThe top reflector is one-piecehydroformed aluminum to obtaina smooth and precise reflectingsurface. The reflector is finishedwith the same vacuum metalizingprocess as the die-cast reflectormodules.
Die-Cast AluminumHousing and SpecularAluminum ReflectorModulesThe electrical housing is die-cast aluminum using a low-copper content alloy formaximum corrosion resistance. The modular reflector modules arestamped specular aluminumpanels.
Totally Sealed OpticsParking garages are openstructures allowing outside airand moisture to enter. In addition, vehicle exhaust constantlyattacks the fixture. If any ofthese contaminants penetratethe luminaire, light output willsteadily decrease as the opticalcomponents become coatedwith a film of pollutants.
The PGL5 is totally sealed with an IP66 rating. A one-pieceextruded silicone gasket, withthe ends fused together to forma continuous piece, seals therefractor to the electrical housing. At the fixture top, wire penetrationsare sealed by a silicone grommet.
Eight Stage Finish 1. Power wash in a potassium
hydroxide solution at 100°F.
2. Clear water rinse bath.
3. Iron phosphate conversioncoating at 90°F.
4. Clear water rinse bath ambient temperature.
5. Sealer bath.
6. Dry off oven.
7. Powder coating, 2.5 milnominal thickness.
8. Bake for 15 minutes at 400°F.

Injection Molded RefractorsPrecision light control results fromthe sharp prisms produced byinjection molding. The standardmaterial is polycarbonate.Polycarbonate reduces lensyellowing and stabilizes within thefirst 100 hours of operation, andoffers significantly greater impactand vandal resistance during thelife of the lens. Optional refractormaterial is UV stabilized acrylic.
Fast Installation and Maintenance
KIM LIGHTING 5
CleaningBecause parking garages are open structures, fixtures will eventuallybecome dirty with air and exhaust pollutants. With large numbers offixtures in most garages, it is simply not practical or cost effective tohand clean the luminaires. The PGL5 is rated to IP66, allowing powerwashing; a fast and effective way to keep the fixtures at peakefficiency through regular maintenance.
Speed MountThe Kim speed mount attachesto the junction box, which canbe flush with the ceiling, or surface mounted. Thespeed mount is labeled withthe “Driving Direction” clearlyindicated so the fixture will becorrectly oriented in the garagefor the selected light pattern.
Optional Balanced Pendant J-Box and Bird Shroud (PB2)Pendant installations pose two problems that are solved by thisoption. First, the fixture must be balanced to hang vertical. Second, the fixture top should not provide a place for birds to nest.Constructed of die-cast aluminum, the PB2 utilizes the Kim speedmount for rapid fixture mounting and provides an aesthetic andfunctional solution for pendant installations.
Fixture Wiring andMountingWith the fixture suspended bythe speed mount, both handscan be used for making fieldwire connections. Final mountingis made by simply sliding thefixture onto the speed mount, which engages an anti-theftfixture-locking device.
Lamp and Ballast AccessThe PGL5 has two no-toolaccess latches on the electricalhousing. Both latches are openedto lower the refractor, but oneside stays fixed as the hinge. The refractor then swings downfor easy access to the lamp. Ifaccess to the ballast is required, the upper reflector is removedthrough keyhole slots byloosening two no-tool fasteners.

Top Deck LightingAn open top deck is essentiallya parking lot where polemounted luminaires offer thegreatest efficiency. Becausethey are totally exposed to theelements, these fixtures must beof the highest quality. Of equalimportance, top deck luminairesmust complement the buildingarchitecture since their relationshipis openly visible to aestheticscrutiny. Kim Lighting offers acomprehensive line of polemounted luminaires combiningrugged construction, highperformance and architecturalcompatibility. They are beingused for top deck lightingthroughout the world withunqualified success.Refer to the following Kimproduct lines and their respectivecatalogs:AR/SAR The Archetype®

Stairways and PedestrianBridgesThe I.E.S. recommends amaintained average of 10 to 20footcandles on stairways. Thisrequires a luminaire far moreefficient than the typical steplight. The Kim Low LevelFloodlight is a perfect solutionfor stairways and pedestrianbridges because of itssophisticated optics. An entireflight of stairs can normally beilluminated with a single LLFbecause the light is throwndownward at the same angleas the stairway. See Kim LLFcatalog. Other Applications
Double-T Structural SystemsThe most difficult obstacle in parkinggarage lighting is the double-Tstructure in which the entire ceilingacts as a light-absorbing baffle. Thisprevents broad lighting of theceiling and beams for visualsecurity. The PGL53 is the bestsolution because its rectangularlight pattern is least affected by theclosely spaced beams. For optimumperformance, the PGL53 fixtureshould be suspended by apendant using the optional PB2balanced pendant junction boxand bird shroud. The bottom of thefixture should be even with thebottom of the beams, or even lowerif heights permit.
Adding or Relocating FixturesOlder parking garages are oftenpoorly illuminated because thecriteria for lighting was not wellestablished when they wereconstructed, and true parkingluminaires did not exist. Theseolder garages can be brought upto today’s lighting standards byreplacing the existing fixtures withKim’s PGL5 luminaires, or addingthese new luminaires to the existingsystem. Surface mounted conduitruns are normally used for fixtureadditions using one of the twomethods at left.
Conversion from Fluorescentto HIDParking garages with fluorescentlighting lack the efficiency andlong term performance of HIDsystems. Fluorescent lighting isoften bare lamp, which meansthey have no optical control, andcollect dirt and dust very rapidly. Also, fluorescent lamps aretemperature sensitive, withoutput reduced as the ambienttemperature decreases orincreases from the 77°F optimum.Because fluorescent systems areusually double-row configurations, the change to HID is relativelyeasy because the electricaldistribution is in the correctlocation for PGL54s.
VERTICAL SECTIONTHROUGH DOUBLE-T PLAN VIEW –– TYPICAL BAY
Fixture Mounted to Junction BoxA standard 4" junction box is fastened to theceiling and fed with surface mountedconduit. A PGL5 fixture is then mounted tothe junction box using the standard Kimspeed mount as illustrated on page 5. This isthe easiest method of adding fixturesbecause all standard components are used.
PGL5 Fixture used as a Junction BoxThis method is more difficult to install, but offers theadvantage of reduced depth where floor-to-ceilingdistance is minimal. The PGL5 fixtures must be orderedwith K" or L" N.P.T. conduit taps (Consult Factory). The refractor and upper reflector must be removed toallow fixture mounting to the ceiling, and field wiring.Fixtures are listed for 90°C through-wiring.

Other Kim Parking Garage Luminaires
The PGL Omni-System was the second generation of Kimparking garage luminaires, but employed a totally differentoptical system and look than the PGL4. Due to the uniquenessand success of this luminaire, Kim is also retaining this productfor legacy requirements.
The PGL4 is an advanced version of the original Kim PGLintroduced in 1988. Because there are hundreds of thousands ofthese luminaires throughout the World, Kim is retaining thismodel for projects where replacements or additions are required, and keeping the original fixture configuration is desired.
