The Robert Gordon UniversityThe Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen has long been recognised as a world leader in marine renewable energy research. The Centre for Research in Energy and the Environment (CRE+E) has received substantial research funding for tidal energy projects and was a key player in the Sound of Islay tidal array project now run by Scottish Power Renewables. CRE+E is involved in energy research projects at local, national and international level and is currently developing funding and commercial opportunities around the world.

Maintaining its speciality in marine renewables, the expanding research team is involved in energy resource assessment, novel turbine design, research into structurally significant turbulence, sediment distribution and the development of a subsea support structure for areas of extreme tidal currents.

Beyond marine we have just completed a study of sustainable energy resource modelling for a 2000 home development in Aberdeenshire using bespoke software created at RGU and have strong capability in numerical analysis using Fluent, Matlab, etc.

A significant new arrival at the university is CUSP, the Centre for Understanding Sustainable Practice, which has received £0.5million funding to investigate the behaviour change implications of sustainable development including the social and business demands of using new technologies and intelligent buildings.

The University now includes renewable energy within the study of options for its engineering undergraduates, and the innovative ‘Energy Portfolio’ of MSc. Courses combine environmental engineering with energy exploration. We expect that 2012 will see the introduction of a suite of multi-disciplinary sustainable development MSc’s for engineering, art, architecture, business and health.

SCDIThe Scottish Council for Development and Industry (SCDI) is an independent, membership-driven economic development organisation. It was created in 1931 and today is supported by around 1200 members across Scotland’s manufacturing and service sectors, universities and colleges, local government and enterprise networks, trade associations and professional bodies, arts organisations, churches and trade unions.

As an entirely independent organisation, SCDI’s membership network seeks to strengthen Scotland’s economic competitiveness and sustainable prosperity by influencing government policy at all levels – whether in Scotland or the UK, the European Union or globally. SCDI’s history is rich as a pioneering organisation in many fields of activity. SCDI spearheaded the attraction of overseas manufacturing investment into Scotland in the late 1940s, embarking on a campaign to attract companies from the United States – the first time a European country had pursued such a course. SCDI was also responsible for creating the first industrial estate in Scotland.

Today, SCDI is engaged in public policy issues, economic research and business information and is an active lobbyer of the UK and Scottish Governments on renewables and oil and gas issues. It coordinates a network of 500 young engineers’ and science clubs to encourage young students interested in engineering, science and technology. SCDI also organises a sizeable programme of events from flagship conferences and dinners to informal networking opportunities, plus an ongoing programme of trade missions to markets such as the Middle East, Brazil, China, India and Japan.

SenergySenergy is an international energy services business, delivering an integrated service that adds value and minimises risk for clients through the application of commercial and technical innovation. Established in 2005, Senergy provides project and field development services to clients in the oil and gas and alternative energy markets, and employs over 500 people worldwide. The formation of our alternative energy business in 2008 was a key step in extending our integrated project and asset development services into the alternative and renewable energy sectors.

Senergy delivers world-class consulting and advisory services to clients in the wind power, grid connection, carbon capture and storage, geothermal and coalbed methane markets. Our goal is to bring innovative solutions to the most challenging of problems and harness the best capabilities and talent available.

In some areas, such as geothermal and carbon capture and storage, capabilities like geology, geophysics, petrophysics, reservoir engineering, well engineering and drilling are already found within the oil and gas industry in which Senergy has its roots. We don’t mind where the best thinking has evolved – our passion is to ensure it gets applied in a manner which ensures clients achieve superior returns from their investments, and their customers receive clean, sustainable and affordable energy.

Senergy is actively engaged in working with research and product development partners to develop bespoke new solutions. We believe the global energy challenge that the world faces can only be solved by ensuring renewable and alternative energy sources are commercially competitive. We’re driven by the belief that meeting this challenge will give innovative and creative companies like Senergy a unique opportunity to contribute to a global sustainable energy supply.

S.E.T.S. LtdSETS Ltd provides diving and ROV intervention focused project management and engineering support.

As an established project management and engineering support to numerous oil and gas operators and contractors respectively, our turnkey package solutions company has been conducting a number of studies and solutions aimed at streamlining the renewables sectors’ methodologies with regards to installation and intervention requirements.

Our team, based at the Newmachar Business Centre in Kingseat Business Park, just north of Aberdeen’s Bridge of Don area, is currently being tasked to review on-going methodologies being used within the renewables industry offshore wind sector and to apply learned oil and gas methodologies with a focus on budgeting, scheduling and delivery methods.

Our already strong project management and engineering teams with a healthy oil and gas experience mix have been able to focus on both offshore oil and gas and wind projects in recent months. Our teams have always had a bias towards ROV and diving interventions and construction workscopes and supplementing this with selective experience from the renewables sector has allowed SETS Ltd to set aside resources towards the development of a separate renewables team within the company.

Additional to the “total package delivery” service which our clients have become used to, SETS Ltd strives to ensure that our clients, in an ever more demanding environment, don’t feel the need to worry about budget costs running away from them while knowing that good intervention practices have been implemented throughout their project with the highest standards of HSE review applied.

Shell UK LimitedShell is a global group of energy and petrochemical companies. We seek to help meet global energy demand in a responsible way.

Our presence in the UK, including Scotland, is important to our global business. We directly employ about 8,000 people in the UK. Our upstream business operates out of Aberdeen and has equity in about 8% of the UK’s oil and gas, and operates 13% on behalf of Shell and its co-venturers.

Shell’s main contribution to the energy challenge is to find and produce oil and gas and to process these into useful products and useable energy while reducing CO2 emissions. We see four distinct areas: natural gas, carbon capture and storage (CCS), biofuels, and the energy efficiency of our operations.

Reducing CO2 emissions from fossil fuels in the power-generating sector economically must be a priority. With Shell’s leading position in Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) and new technologies in recovering natural gas, we can supply gas to replace coal in power generation. Modern gas plants emit half the CO2 of new coal plants. Natural gas can provide the cheapest and fastest way to reduce CO2 emissions over the next ten years.

Shell’s capability and research and development programmes in carbon capture and storage (CCS) can take this further, working with others to overcome challenges. Shell is working with Scottish and Southern Entergy to develop a Gas CCS project for CO2 storage in the depleted offshore Goldeneye field.

Meeting growing demand for cleaner, lower-CO2 transport fuels will include a range of approaches, such as vehicles powered by biofuels or hydrogen fuel cells. We are the world’s largest distributor of biofuels, and we are working to make them more sustainable. Most hydrogen is made from non-renewable sources like gas and coal, but in the future more could come from renewable energy or electrolysis. We are involved in research and demonstration projects and have already opened a cluster of commercial hydrogen filling stations.

Shell supports the Energy Technologies Institute, a unique partnership between government and industry to accelerate the deployment of low carbon technologies.

VattenfallVattenfall, which is a leading European energy company currently operates three offshore wind farms - Kentish Flats, off the north Kent coast, Thanet, off the north east Kent coast and Ormonde, off the north west coast near Barrow. Edinbane, an onshore wind farm on the Isle of Skye started generating power in the summer of 2010.

In January 2012 it was announced that Vattenfall would integrate its portfolio with Nuon creating a combined onshore wind energy business that could invest up to £1bn in the UK by 2020.

The move brings together 14 projects in England, Wales and Scotland totalling over 624MW of capacity under the same management.

Vattenfall is moving forward with the planned European Offshore Wind Deployment Centre (EOWDC) near Aberdeen – a joint venture involving Technip and Aberdeen Renewable Energy Group. With EOWDC, the Clashindarroch onshore scheme consented in December 2010 and with a decision expected for Aultmore onshore scheme by autumn 2012, the north east of Scotland is an important area for the company.

Vattenfall completed the commissioning of the Ormonde offshore wind farm February 2012. The 30 REpower 5M 5 MW turbines will, once they are generating at full power, provide energy for more than 100,000 homes.

The Round 3 East Anglia Offshore Wind Farm is being developed in partnership with ScottishPower Renewables, a project which could deliver up to 7,200 MW in installed capacity and provide clean electricity for the equivalent annual demand of around 4 million UK homes.

The UK and Scottish waters particularly, are blessed with some of the highest levels of wave and tidal energy to be found on the planet. Vattenfall has teamed up with Edinburgh based Pelamis Wave Power to explore development opportunities off the west coast of the Shetland Islands. The joint venture, called Aegir, hopes initially to develop a project of 10MW.
