Petco Adoption Center Celebrates First Anniversary The Cat House on the Kings is proud to celebrate the first anniversary of the Petco Adoption Center in Fresno. In 2013 the adoption center placed close to 600 cats and kittens into loving furever homes. On February 22nd, a celebration was held at the Petco on Blackstone Ave. Scores of fans and supporters turned out for the festivities. Channel 47s Kathryn Herr and reporter Justin Sacher, an avid TNRer, came out to cover the event. Fresno City Councilmember Clint Olivier was also on hand for the celebration. Mr. Olivier presented Tammy and Lynea with a certificate from the City of Fresno in recognition of the Petco Adoption Centers hard work, dedication and efforts to find homes for cats, and in promoting awareness and education.I asked Tammy Barker, who spearheaded the adoption center project, about how she felt about the first birthday of the Cat Houses Petco Adoption Center. What I love best about our Petco Adoption Center is two things. First, it really helps when adopters have a wonderful place to sit, interact, meet and really bond with the cat or kitten that they might be interested in adopting. This truly helps people find just the right pet for their particular family explained Tammy. Secondly, I love the fact that we have a safe place where we can showcase some of the fabulous adults cats. Adult cats are often overlooked when people only want kittens. Sometimes people come to the adoption center thinking they want a kitten. Then they simply fall in love with one of our adult cats and end up taking one of them home instead. That is just priceless.Heather Garvey, adoption coordinator, had this to say; The Adoption Center has opened doors for animals to get a quality forever home. It gives the Cat House on the Kings the opportunity to reach out to our community, to educate about pet overpopulation and the need to spay and neuter. To me, said Heather, that means everything. Thanks goes out to Petco manager, Carl Giorgini, and the Petco staff for everything they do for us! The Cat House would also like to thank Petco corporate for the goodie bags, the balloons and their endless support. We are so grateful to Natural Balance Pet Foods and Wellness Pet Foods for supplying our party with a sumptuous spread of yummy food and beverages. In addition they both provided samples of their products for the goodie bags. Dug-Out Cookies deserves a home-run cheer for bringing an assortment of their delicious cookies. A special shout out goes to Karen Rae for providing the to-die-for cupcakes. We would be remiss if we didnt mention how grateful we are to everyone who volunteered to set up, clean up and help out during the event. We are extremely grateful and humbled by all the people who joined us to help the Cat House celebrate this milestone and for all the pet food donations that will help feed the hungry pets in Fresno County.Tammy Barker, daughter Amanda and MollyL-R Justin Sacher, Kathryn Herr, Clint Olivier, Lynea and TammyFrom InmemoryoFAnderson, Lauren ............................................................................... Filmmakers Michel and Andre spent four days filming every aspect of the Cat House operations and doing interviews. It is amusing to note that some of us were initially reduced to gig-gly little girls by their sexy French accents. Michel and Andre were funny, entertaining and a real pleasure to work with. Based in Montreal, ChicTv is a family based company owned by Marc-Andre Chicoine. Mr. Chicoine is also the companys content creator and producer. ChicTV is producing a series of 24 documentary portraits on exceptionally inspiring people from around the world. The show is expected to air in Quebec around April 2015. Dinuba FFA DonatesThe Cat House on the Kings would like to thank the members of the Dinuba High School Future Farmers of America for their generous donation. The club members collected dog and cat food as well as various supplies like bleach and paper towels. This donation drive has become a yearly event and we are extremely grateful that these wonderful kids chose to donate to the Cat House. Their parents must be very proud to have raised such generous and caring children. Dinuba Future Farm-ers of America, we salute you!The Dedication wall helps raise much needed funds. You may make a donation for a plaque in memory of a lost loved one (In Memory of...), to honor someone (In Honor of...), or just to show your support of the cat House (The Mill-er Family Supports...) The plaques are black metal with gold lettering and are hung in the entryway of the Cat House. For more information orto place an order, call:Marilynn Miller (559) 645-1080Sizes and Prices 3 x 12 ...........$100.00 7 x 12 ...........$180.00 10.5 x 12 ......$250.00Reach over 26,000 of our newsletter subscriberswith a business card sized ad.$50 for a single insertion$150 annual rate w/four quarterly issuesEmail Tammy@cathouseonthekings.comQuilt Raffle Tickets on Sale Now!Maxine C. Apparently there are lots of people interested in filming a show about a no-kill, no-cage rescue/sanctuary that has 1,000 cats. Go figure! In February a major network came out to the Cat House to film a television show. Un-fortunately we are not permitted to give any details or show any photos until after the show airs. It is a show everyone has heard of and we are very excited! We will inform you as to the details as soon as we receive permission to do so.A film crew visited us in early March from Global Photo Associates, a Japanese television production company that is based in Los Angeles. The producer came from Japan to film a show about the Cat House on the Kings. No additional details are available at this time.Celebrating A Facebook MilestoneOn February 10, 2014 The Cat House on the Kings Facebook page hit the 100,000 Fans Milestone! Since then, our Liked numbers have grown to more than 107,500 fans from all over the world! Wed like to do a special Cat House on the Kings newsletter THANK YOU SHOUT OUT to our volunteer offsite Facebook page administrator, Harvie Schreiber, who spends 15 hours a day, every day, monitoring, moderat-ing, posting and promoting our Facebook page and The Cat House on the Kings. Its been a labor of love for Harvie who has been doing our Face-book page for us since early 2011. (Many people still think Lynea has the time to post on Facebook all day long ~ she is much too busy running The Cat House on the Kings!) In addition to her Face-book duties, Harvie also volunteers 1-2 days per week at our Fresno Petco Adoption Center, writes descriptions for the cats and kittens at our Fresno Petco Adoption Center, and helps to coordinate fundraising efforts for The Cat House on the Kings. Facebook is an amazing venue to share our rescue/sanctuary and our vision with others ... please LIKE our Facebook page, visit it often, and keep sharing our posts with everyone!Spring Open House Set For May 3rdThe Cat House on the Kings will host their Spring Open House Fundraiser on Saturday, May 3, 2014 from 10 am-2 pm. Please mark your calendars now. We are seeking donations for our silent auction. We encourage you to donate an item or perhaps solicit a donation for our auction. Ask your friends and relatives if they might have something that they might be willing to donate. (Remember, it is tax-deductible!) Of course we love cat-related items but we also can auction off wine, art, crafts, jewelry, purses and much more! Donated items should be new although specific exceptions can be made for example, an antique. Gift certificates for trips, goods and services are very much appreciated! We will also need vol-unteers for set-up and clean up. Vendors-Apply for your space now. Vendor fee is only $25 or an equal donation for the silent auction. If you want to volunteer, be a vendor or you have any ques-tions regarding the Spring Open House, please email tammy@cathouseonthekings.comWe are only allowed two fundraisers per year so we really count on your help and participation. Admission is a donation of: Cash, gift cards, (Amazon, Home Depot, Costco, etc.) canned kit-ten and adult cat food, bleach, paper towels, pine cleaner, and/or postcards/postcard stamps. We cant wait to see you!Avery Sheldon-Volunteer at The Cat House on the Kings Fresno Petco Adoption Center 1. How old are you Avery? I am 12 years old. 2. What do you like about volunteering at The Cat House on the Kings Petco adoption center?I love being able to help out with the cats. Seeing them happy makes me happy and watching them get adopted makes me double happy.3. How long have you been coming to help out?I have been helping since the end of March 2013.4. What do your parents think about you spending so much time at the center? They enjoy seeing how much I enjoy it. I am learning discipline, faithfulness, and obedience to other adults as well as the kitties.5. What do you like best and what do you dislike most about your volunteer work at the adoption center? The thing I like the most is seeing the cats get good homes where they will be loved. I love volunteering at The Cat House on the Kings so much, I dont know if I dislike anything about it. The other people that work or volunteer there are all so nice, I love the system of having people approved to make sure the cat ends up with a nice family.6. How do you know every cat/kitten at the adoption center so well?I know the cats/kittens at the adoption center well because I spend time with them and the more time I spend with the cat/kitten, the better I get to know its personality.7. Why do you foster kitties for The Cat House on the Kings?I foster because it helps The Cat House, it helps the kitty, I enjoy it, and while it is fun watching all the cats/kittens get adopted, to me, it is even more fun seeing a kitty I fostered get adopted.12-year old dedicated volunteer - Avery SheldonAll auction items are cat approvedDonations needed for the silent auction!CAT HOUSE ON THE KINGS T-SHIRTS SOUGHT FOR UPCOMING FUNDRAISER PROJECTFormer Cat House on the Kings employee Eileen Romero knows how important fundraising for us can be! In the past, her mom, Phyllis Estee, has made a gorgeous quilt that we raffled off and it was quite popular. Eileen has approached her mom and asked her to make a new quilt for our October Fundraiser ... only, this time, the quilt will be made from Cat House on the Kings t-shirts! HERES HOW YOU CAN HELP! We need some clean, nearly new or slightly used Cat House on the Kings t-shirts to use in the quilt. (Presumably ones youre not wearing any longer since they will be cut up and used in the quilt!) If youve got one (or more) to donate, you can either drop them off at our Fresno Petco Adoption Center (daily 10-5), or mail them to The Cat House on the Kings, 7120 S. Kings River Road, Parlier, CA 93648, ATTN: QUILT PROJECT. (If youve got other cute cat t-shirts that you think might work as filler or to fill in some gaps, wed love to have those as well ... thanks!) questions contact tammy@cathouseonthekings.comRescues-We Help Each OtherIn the world of animal rescue, groups must work together to ensure the best possible outcomes for our charges. We strive to provide the utmost opportu-nity for every animal, whether cat or dog, to find a good home. This often means that animals must be transported to rescues where cats/dogs are in high demand but short supply. These would be areas for example, where mandatory spay and neuter laws are in effect. The Cat House has worked with rescues in Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Nevada. Logisti-cally, of course it is easier to work with rescues in our own state. The Cat House has recently been inundated with lots of aban-doned puppies. We were lucky enough to be able to send some of these dogs, and a whole bunch of kittens, to RescueMePet in Santa Monica and MeowzzResQ in Los Angeles. Mirani Hasani provides much of our transport needs. (see Mirians Ark Pet Transport article) In early February, FoundAni-mals.org from the Los Angeles area brought us five unadoptable cats (i.e. seniors, disabled) and in exchange they took back with them, 25 adoptable cats and kittens! Shortly thereafter, they took an additional 10 cats. We were informed that the cats were a hit and that some had already been adopted. Not only do these exchanges greatly increase the animals chances for adoption, but this also means room will be available at the Cat House for new arrivals. There is never a shortage of new arrivals. Lynea spends a good part of her day answering the dozens of calls she receives daily asking for help. Of course we cant help everyone but the Cat House tries its best because that is what we do!Expanded Low Cost Spays and NeutersThe Cat House on the Kings is extremely fortunate to be the beneficiary of a very large anonymous grant to provide low cost spays, neuters and vaccines to the public. With assistance from the SNIP team, we are now partnering up with local vets in Fresno, Kings and Tulare counties to provide these services for both cats AND dogs. Cats, boy or girl, are a mere $15, and small dogs (less than 25 lbs) are $30. Larger dogs can be fixed through SNIP for a slightly higher fee. Special pricing is available to caretakers of feral colonies. Vaccines purchased at the same time are only $5. To schedule an appointment at the Cat House, call 559-638-0490. If you live in the Fresno area or need to fix a larger dog, call SNIP at 559-961-7647 or Tammy at 559-999-8238.FoundAnimals.org adopted out...beauty within minutes of arrivalRescueMePet van loaded and ready to go!Karla helps load kitties bound for So. Cal.Mirians Ark Pet TransportMirian Hasani moved to the United States from Italy. She lived in Dallas, Texas before settling in Santa Monica, California. Mirian and her two daughters share a common love for cats. I can say the same thing that Lynea says, said Mirian. I always wanted a kitty, by my mother would not let me have one.Mirian was looking to volunteer at a shelter but she wanted to find a no-kill shelter. Her very best friend introduced her to the Cat House on the Kings. Mirian and daughter Tanya took a trip to the Cat House and fell in love with everything they do. One day Mirian answered a Facebook post looking for a volunteer with graphic art experience to do the Cat House flyers, headers for the newsletter etc. Mirian earns her paycheck doing bookkeeping and IT but her first love is computer graphics and design. She has since been doing a fantastic job for us for which we are very grateful. We are so lucky to find someone willing to donate her time and talent to us.Mirian became a frequent visitor. She didnt own a car at that time so she would rent a car for each trip to the Cat House. Mirian always asked if they needed any transports before coming and she would volunteer to deliver kittens to rescues on her return trip home. Following the sad passing of her father, Mirian received enough money to purchase a minivan. Mirian purchased the van on a Friday, christening it on Saturday by transporting 30 kittens from the Cat House to waiting rescues in southern California. One little traveler was adopted with 20 minutes of his arrival. By doing this, explained Mirian, I can help the Cat House get more kittens adopted and free up space to they can rescue more. In just the past year, Mirian has transported well over 100 cat, kittens and puppies. Mirian just transported another 19 kittens and 6 puppies (some with diarrhea) to southern California rescues. Five kittens were adopted within two hours of arrival. How true is her dedication? The Cat House forces Mirian to accept gas money for her trips. She then turns around and gives it back in the form of a donation. It doesnt get any more dedicated than that. Thank you Mirian for all you do!Mirian and one of her transporteesMirians new vanPetcos Tree of HopeThe Cat House on the Kings has just received a check from Petco for $2,483.39. This money was raised during the Petco Tree of Hope Holiday Fundraiser. Gift baskets were sold and clerks asked customers checking out if they wanted to donate. The Cat House thanks Petco and everyone who contributed to this incredibly worthy cause!Crazy-Fur-Catz Continues! The Destination Imagination girls have contin-ued on their mission to educate the public on the benefits of spaying and neutering. The Century Elementary School students had a booth at our 2013 Spring Open House where they presented their project and sold items to raise money for their trip to the national competition in Tennes-see. Team member Kaylee Gunn has created a video of her cat, Casper, talking and even doing a rap song about his story. Kaylee and her mom, Rena, found Casper injured after being hit by a car. They brought him to the Cat House for treat-ment and ended up adopting him.The girls have spent the past year giving speech-es on spaying and neutering to anyone who would listen. They gave their presentation for a gathering of 50 Girl Scouts. They have passed out flyers that included the information on the Cat House on the Kings low-cost ($15) spay and neuter services. On February 15th the girls even assisted the Fresno Fire Department in rescuing a cat stuck in a tree. The girls have come up with a presentation for this year that surpasses even last years phenom-enal job! The Destination Imagination competi-tion was held in Fowler on February 22 and the Crazy-Fur-Catz girls took first place in the regional competition. Congratulations on a job well done! The team now moves on to compete in the state finals on March 28th. We wish you all the best of luck! The Cat House is very proud of the Destination Imagination girls. These girls are the wave of our future, the stewards who will carry on the mission of working for the betterment of cats everywhere.Important Reminder! Please remember to add info@cathouseonthekings.com to your email safe list so we dont end up in your junk email box!Lynea often receives calls, many from seniors, concerned about their pets who may outlive them. Pet surrender fees are high. If you have ever wondered about who would care for your pet(s) when you are no longer around, then read this informative article from local attorney and cat lover, Susan Moore.PLANNING FOR THE CARE OF YOUR PETAre you concerned about your pet should something happen to you? We hope you have a pet-loving friend or relative who would take your pet and love him or her as their own, but many pet owners are not so fortunate. As an attorney I have helped many clients not so fortunate with an estate plan to include provisions for the continued care of their furry loved ones.Planning for the care of a pet requires two primary considerations. First, who do you want to designate as your pets care giver? Second, do you need to provide the care giver with financial support in order to ensure your pet receives the same quality of life you provided? If the answer to the second question is yes, you may want to consider creating a pet trust. In a pet trust, you name a person or organization to act as a trustee, that is, to oversee the money or property you put in the trust for your pets benefit. The care giver you have chosen will care for your pet with the expense of the care paid by the trustee. The trustee will check periodically on your pet to make sure the level of care specified in the trust is being provided.A pet trust can be created through your will on your death, through a living trust which can be effective either upon death or in the event you should become disabled and unable to care for your pet. In California, you can also create a statutory pet trust, a trust fund set up today and funded by a bank account or other assets desig-nated to provide for your pets care and controlled by you, as trustee, until you are no longer able. Alternatively, if your resources are limited, Colonial Penn, New York Life and other insurance companies offer end of life policies without the requirement of a medical check which can be used to fund a pet trust or pay for the surrender of pets to a no-kill animal shelter. However the trust is created, it can provide detailed information to ensure your pets likes, dislikes and routines are made known and respected. It can also provide medical history, nominate your chosen vet, and anything else you believe a care giver should know for the proper care of your pet. If you have questions about estate planning or pet trusts, please give me a call or send an email, I would be happy to discuss the options in light of your own particular circumstances. And in the event you do not have anyone who is willing to act as your pets care giver, the good people at The Cat House on the Kings can discuss options for the continued care of your cats.Susan L.
