“ Words of Wisdom from Rev Julia Cody”..really?! When I saw the banner given to my thoughts last month, I was a little taken aback! I guess you’ll have judge how wise my words really are!

I hope this finds you well and having coped with the snow. It’s hard to believe that last month I was writing on the heels of Christmas about New Year resolutions, and now Pancake Day is upon us, with Lent and Easter right behind! Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, Feb 13th, and there’s a special service at 7.30pm to which all are welcome. But what’s Lent about? Is it really just another chance,to give things up again?! Lent is the 6 weeks before our Easter celebrations; when people give up luxuries and live more simply, allowing for self-reflection. It’s a season for taking stock and examining our priorities, making changes where needed. Above all, Lent’s an opportunity for us to consider how we’re doing spiritually. In the busyness of daily life, it’s important to recognise that we’re all spiritual beings. Many of us are aware of how we’re doing physically, but how often do we stop to ask ourselves how we’re doing spiritually? It’s important to look after ourselves wholly - physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually.Do you ever take time to explore your spiritual beliefs? Let me encourage you, this Lent, to try and carve out some precious time for yourself - asking what you believe about faith, spirituality, God... and if you fancy a cuppa and a chat, please get in touch.

Tips from Your Local PGA Pro

At Perton Park Golf ClubThis month we are working on the weaknesses in your golf game. Most golfers think they know what parts of the

game they are good at and what they struggle with. Even beginners who have only been on the course for a few rounds start to develop an opinion. If you want to improve your game then it is very important to identify what you are good at, what needs improvement, and how can you get better.Stats: The best way to get an idea of what your weaknesses are is to take stats each time you play. What I’m looking for are fairways hit, greens in regulation, putts per round, up and down rate, sand saves, and scoring averages on par 3, 4, and 5 holes. These stats aren’t perfect, but they will start to give you an idea of what areas you need to work on.Practice Time: Too many times I’ve seen golfers practice and instead of working on an area of their game that is weak, they will be practicing their strengths. I know hitting good shots is more “fun”, but it is hindering their overall scoring improvement. The majority of practice is better spent eliminating weaknesses by improving the parts of your game that you aren’t good at.It is important to remember that you can’t completely ignore your strengths as you have to maintain those skills as well. It’s important to spend part of your practice time covering every aspect of your game. Divide your schedule so you’ll spend time both on the putting green and on the driving range. Hit balls not only from the nice grass on the practice tee, but also out of some longer grass. Practice getting up and down not only from the fringe, but also out of the deep rough. Try hitting lag putts from 20 feet, but then stretch it out to 60 feet so if you come across a monster putt you can still get the ball close to the hole.Course Type: One more tip. If you play a certain type of course then you have to realize that in your normal course of play you won’t see certain types of shots. Think about the course you play the most? Is it flat? Hilly? Does it have small greens? Big greens? You need to make a conscious effort to hit shots that you may not get at your home club so you are ready for when you play other courses. You don’t want to go to a course that is setup differently than the one you are used to and be completely lost when faced with shots you don’t hit on a regular basis.Give it a try next time you play/practice or why not book in for my Six Week Game Improvement Course for £99? Year of the Mobile WebAt the recent Consumer Electronics Show (CES) show in Las Vegas much was made of the increasing number of smartphones in use. One of the key trends in technology for the next 12 months is predicted by many pundits to be the year of the mobile web.Obviously there are many benefits to this trend and smartphones are incredible pieces of technology. The range and complexity of applications (apps) available is fascinating. Many of these apps are free to users allowing them to interact with others through the mobile web. For all the benefits that we gain from using such tech though, we must ask what price are we paying when we download and use them.All applications available on the major platforms come with user ratings in the form of stars. They also come with a list of permissions that you should review before you install them.How many of us read and understand what we're giving away when we install the?. For instance "prevent device sleeping" or "fine GPS based location services" are often part of the package when we install apps, what do they mean? As a facebook user or Twitter do you allow location based updates in your privacy settings? Many applications use full internet access. Whilst this may be necessary for interactive games and such, you might ask why does an app need to read "phone state and identity" which means the app knows when your phone is active and what numbers you are communicating with.Did you really want the app provider knowing where you are all the time, tracking which sites you visit, who you talk to and for how long? This is useful and importantly saleable information. That is how many of these developers are earning money out of giving you free software.The mobile web may be here but you don’t have to feed it. You may think it doesn't matter that they know all this data about you. But imagine if a police officer asked you for details of every conversation, every location and every site you've visited since you got your phone, what would you say? Think your data's not worth anything? Think again, 10m UK iPhone users have potentially been abused by Google who have deliberately sidestepped inbuilt privacy settings to track iPhone users web habits.

A Word From Your MPOne thing I brought with me, which not every MP can claim, was experience working in manufacturing. Manufacturing is incredibly important to South Staffordshire, with twice the number of people working in manufacturing in the area than the national average. We have all seen a sad decline in these industries, in the last century. This dreadful erosion of our manufacturing business has, I believe, led to a fall in the standing of this country, our ability to weather economic storms and provide good quality jobs for our young people.Because of this, I have been campaigning, since 2010, to put a great focus on manufacturing and bringing more jobs to South Staffordshire. You can imagine my delight after months of negotiations then we were able to secure the £350m Jaguar engine plant to be built in my constituency. Yet, I do believe there is more to do and I have secured a debate in the House of Commons on how we can promote and encourage more manufacturing industry, not just here in South Staffordshire but right across the West Midlands. I hope to gain confirmation of the Government’s continued commitment towards investment in Regional Growth Funds and to improving bank lending to manufacturing businesses in the West Midlands.The West Midlands was the place that the first industrial revolution was born and it is the place where, if ever we hope to see another manufacturing and industrial revolution occur again, it needs to be started.While there is a lot happening right now in Westminster, it is also all go in the constituency. I am really pleased to announce that I will be moving my parliamentary constituency office to Codsall, with effect from the 1st of February. The new office will be based at the address of: Jubilee House (the old police station), 59 Wolverhampton Road, Codsall, WV8 1PX. Many people walk in off the street with problems and queries, and I hope that you will feel happy and comfortable to come and visit me, and my staff, at any time.If there are any issues that you would like to raise with me personally, please don't hesitate to get in touch. PERTON GARDENING CLUB FEBRUARY INTHE GARDEN

Now is a good time to cut back ornamental grasses as they are now beginning to look a bit sorry for themselves.Cut back dead stems but be careful not to damage emerging new shoots. Divide snowdrops as the flowers begin to fade, lift and split them planting single bulbs a few centimetres apart. Plant winter flowering shrubs like Mahonia for a splash of instant colour.Finish pruning fruit trees and plant new crowns of rhubarb giving them a good mulching. Sow broad beans, early carrots, peas, radishes and spring onions outdoors and tender plants indoors. Pot up or plant out any rooted hardwood cuttings that were taken last year and start to take new ones for next year. This is easy to do simply cut just above a bud where the current seasons and the previous years growth meet, trim the cutting to length 20cm if taken from a large tree or 5-8cm if from a smaller specimen, remove leaves and side shoots, cut at 45 degrees just above the top bud and horizontally below the bottom bud. Plant with just the top buds showing around the edge of the pot or directly in the ground in a sheltered spot and by next autumn you should have well rooted cuttings.
