U.S. Environmental Protection Agency: HHAG/OHEA and HERL/OHR invite PROPOSALS FORCOOPERATIVE AGREEMENTS on biologically-based dose-response modeling for developmental toxici-ty. Project is part of Office of Research and Develop-ment's efforts to support development of improvedhealth risk assessment procedures. Proposals should at-tempt to incorrate basic mechanistic/site of actioninformation and pertinent information on processes thatinfluence chemical action. Integration ofthis informationwith pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic interactions attarget site may provide more accurate estimates ofhumanrisk. Consideration of other factors also important indevelopment of dose-response models such as thresholdconcept, the number, size and spread ofdose groups, andeffect of timing and duration of exposure on the out-come. Approaches should include some means of verify-ing the model at doses below observable dose range instandard Segment II studies. Preference will be givenproposals including integrated approach to problem.First year effort expected to involve development ofbackground inforrnation and strategy(ies) for approach-ing problem, with subsequent years devoted to develop-ing models, collection of additional animal data, andvalidation procedures. Possibility of interaction with on-going research efforts at EPA or other federal labs may beconsidered. Preproposals (seven to ten pages) to outlineapproach, provide cost estimates, staff qualifications/ca-pabilities of organization(s) involved. Following reviewof preproposals, selected applicants will be asked tosubmit final proposals.
