Time to Think Quality Assurance!

The Youth for the Quality Care of Animals (YQCA) site is open and ready for youth participation!

Nebraska 4-H requires all youth enrolled in livestock projects to complete annual quality assurance certification through Youth for the Quality Care of Animals (YQCA). YQCA is a national multi-species quality assurance program focused on three core pillars: food safety, animal well-being, and character development.

Requirements YQCA certification is required for all 4-H members (4-H age 8-18) enrolled in any of the following projects:

Beef (bucket calf, feeder calf, breeding beef, market beef)

Dairy Cattle

Goat (breeding meat goat, dairy goat, meat goat)

Poultry

Rabbit

Sheep (breeding sheep, market sheep)

Swine (breeding swine, market swine)

Annual Training Nebraska 4-H youth ages 8-18, who are enrolled in any of the livestock projects listed above are required to participate in an annual YQCA training. Annual training is available through an online course. The online YQCA course costs $12 per individual regardless of age. Please see https://4h.unl.edu/yqca for more information.

Alternatively, youth may participate in an in-person YQCA training hosted by local Extension offices. In-person YQCA training cost $3 per individual regardless of age.

In-person training will be hosted by the Extension Offices in Perkins and Chase Counties on the following dates:

February 1; 2:45-4:00 PM—Chase County Extension

February 7; 4:00-5:30 PM—Perkins County Extension

February 8; 2:45-4:00 PM—Chase County Extension

Testing Out Intermediates (ages 12-14) and Seniors (ages 15-18) have the option to attempt to test out of annual training requirements. If youth pass the online test, they will no longer be required to complete the annual training requirements above. Youth may only attempt the online test once per year. Youth must receive at least an 80% on the test to pass, and those who pass will be charged:

$36 for Intermediates

$48 for Seniors However, if youth receive less than an 80%, they will not be charged for the test and will be required to complete an annual training either online or in-person.

Test out tests are available online ONLY (there are NO hard copy test out tests available!).

Deadlines The deadline to complete the annual YQCA training or to test out of annual training is determined by your local Extension Office. The deadline for Perkins and Chase Counties is JUNE 15TH.
