District-wide Cloverbuds The Sunshine Makers Cloverbud Club will meet June 14th (Always the 2nd Thursday of the month) at the Paola Office from 5:30-6:30pm. Any Cloverbud is welcome to come. Clover-buds must be 5-6 years old by Jan. 1, 2018. Jr. Leaders Meetings The next Miami County Jr. Leader Meeting will be June 11th at 7pm at the Paola Office. The next Linn County Jr. Leader Meeting will be June 17th at 4:00 pm at the Linn County 4-H Bldg. 4-H Councils The next Miami County 4-H Council Meeting will be July 9th at 8pm at the Paola Office. The next Linn County 4-H Council Meeting will be July 25th at 7pm at Linn County 4-H Build-ing. Miami County Fair Food Stand Training July 9th at 8pm will be the Miami County Fair Food Stand Training. Please make sure that every club has a representative as we will be going over the new layout and how to manage your Club’s Food Stand Shift. The Training will last about 30 minutes.

LAST YQCA CLASS!!!! The Livestock Quality Assurance and Pork Quality Assurance programs are no longer availa-ble for 2018. The new program will be called Youth for the Quality Care of Animals (YQCA) and will be required for all youth showing Beef, Goats, Sheep and Swine at the county fair in BOTH Linn and Miami Counties. This program will be offered in a face-to-face class, as well as an on-line option. The LAST class is June 12 at 6:00 p.m. in Paola. All face-to-face classes will need to be pre-registered on-line at http://yqca.org/ and a $3 fee must be paid on-line to be registered for the class. The on-line training will be $12 per youth and can be done at anytime. All quality assurance certifications must be completed by June 15th (class or online).

Chopped, Clover Edition Chopped Clover Edition will be Thursday, June 26th at Miami County Fairgrounds. Again this year, we are having a contest to help grow our event. Participants of Chopped Clover Edition are encouraged to get more teams/individuals to participate. There will be a place to name this person on the registration flyer. The person who recruits the most teams/participants will be announced and receive a prize at Chopped Clover Edition 2018 during the results. At the end of the newsletter you will find the registration flyer.

There will be an orientation/food safety class June 5th @ Paola. All teams are encouraged to have at least one team member attend the Orientation/Food Safety Class.

This year the senior age group will be required to make two dishes. The junior age group is only required to complete one dish but can make more. This year’s theme is Breakfast. As before you will have the pantry list closer to the competition date. So make sure you think out-side the box and get creative!!!!

Camp Counselor Training All Fantastic 4-H Camp Counselors need to attend training on June 12th at 6:30-8:30pm at Johnson County Extension. Dinner will be served at 6:00pm.

East Central District Horse Show The 2018 East Central District Horse Show will be held July 10th in Lawrence, Kansas. The District Horse Show is a qualifier for the Kansas State Fair 4-H Horse Show. Exhibitors must receive a purple or blue at districts to qualify for the Kansas State Fair 4-H Horse Show. Entry information will be sent via e-mail to all horse project members in the spring, but I wanted to make sure everyone had the date of the show.

Poultry Testing Poultry Testing for PT and Bird Flu will be at the Miami Country Fair Grounds Monday, July 9th from 4-6pm. Cost is $1 per bird.

Fashion Revue Fashion Revue Judging will be Monday, July 16, 2018. Clothing project member can pre-enter and model their con-structed and/or purchased outfits in front of a judge on this day. More information about the judging day, Public Revue and pre-entry information will be emailed to Clothing Project members the middle of June. Pre-entries will be due July 6th.

Fashion Revue Orientation We will be holding a Fashion Revue Orientation at the Paola Office on July 12th at 7pm. The Orientation will include an overview of the judging day, demonstration on how to model, modeling practice, and a Q & A session.

Kansas State Fair/KJLS Livestock Nominations Nomination must be signed by an Extension Agent. You must have them signed by June 15th. Nomination for swine, sheep, goats and commercial heifers are due to the state by June 15th. Miami County will have a tagging day for those animals that are being nominated for KSF/KJLS on June 13th from 6-7pm. We will tag in your trailer at the Paola Office on this day.

Photo Mounting Workshop There will be a come and go Photo Mounting Workshop on July 12th from 6-7:30pm. This will be held upstairs at the Paola Office. Photo Mat Boards and Bags will be sold from 6-7pm that day and will be $1.50.

Our 2018 Fair Theme is "Bring on the Games." Each Linn County Club will be getting a plywood square to paint depicting the fair theme. These squares will be displayed at the Linn County Style Revue & Performing Arts Show on July 28th as well as at the Linn County Fair.

Linn County 4-H Club Leaders have signed up for shifts in the 4-H food stand. Check with your club leader to see when your shift is!

The schedule for 4-H Clothing & Textiles Conference Judging/Style Revue/ Performing Arts Show on Saturday, July 28th is availa-ble at the Mound City Extension Office. 2018 Kansas 4-H SpaceTech Changes for the Kansas State Fair This is the second year for Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) at the Kansas State Fair. Last year only posters, displays and notebooks were exhibited. In 2018, additional exhibits will be accepted at the Kansas State Fair. New SpaceTech Classes: Division A – Junior, 9-13 years old 5701 Unmanned Aerial System designed and constructed by exhibitor that is operated by a remote controlled device. The UAS must not be a mere modification of an existing kit or plan. You may not exhibit a UAS that is purchased off the shelf in this class. 5702 Practical application of an Unmanned Aerial System constructed from a commercial (purchased) kit. This includes the UAS, plus one or more of the following: video, notebook, poster, display board, etc. This class is separate from educa-tional exhibits. A tangible use would be mapping Russian olive trees, eroded soils, and bindweed in fields, etc. There are also many other non-agricultural UAS uses that would be appropriate for this class. Division B – Senior, 14 years and older 5706 Unmanned Aerial Systems designed and constructed by exhibitor that is operated by a remote controlled device. 2018 Kansas 4-H State Wheat Expo in South Hutchinson The Kansas 4-H State Wheat Expo is a wheat fun day showcasing all things wheat. Join us for the annual event on Wednesday, Au-gust 2nd from 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. at the Community Center, 101 W. Avenue C, South Hutchinson, KS 67505. It is open to all 4-H family members, 4-H leaders and Extension staff. There will be eight contests open to youth members with cash prizes and ribbons awarded. There will be tours. There is a $6.00 per person registration cost. Registration will go live about June 15, 2018. Visit: http://www.kansas4-h.org/events/index.html. Pre-registration will be required by Monday, July 23rd to ensure an accurate meal count and tour divisions.

County Fire Bans and Rocket Launches This is a reminder about Kansas 4-H rocketry rules as they relate to fire bans in Kansas. Much of Kansas is already in a drought situ-ation. The 2018 Kansas State Fair rules state “if a fire burn ban is in effect for any county in Kansas, exhibitors in any Kansas county are not required to launch their rocket(s). All requirements for the launching of rockets for the state fair and the documenting of the launching are suspended for the duration of the ban.” We advise you to be cautious and use good judgment in planning and conduct-ing county rocket launches, and consider cancelling them if dry conditions warrant.

2018 Kansas 4-H Dog Care and Training Project Changes Periodically the Kansas 4-H Dog Care and Training Project shares changes as they affect 4-H dog shows including the Kansas State Fair 4-H Dog Show.

-The 4-H Dog Show Immunization Record (only MG-34 Revised, October 2017 accepted) must be completed for each dog entered. The record may be printed on any color of paper. Originals or photocopies are acceptable.

-All rabies vaccinations must be administered by a licensed veterinarian. All vaccinations must be current. Dogs must be at least 6 month of age of time of show.

2-Year Old & 3-Year Old Rule Changes There will be a new edition of the 4-H Horse Show Rule Book coming out this spring. Coming with the new edition will be some major changes to the 2-Year Old Snafflebit and 3-Year Old Projects. Those 4-Hers in the 2-Year Old Project should expect to show in two rail phases and be prepared for the interview phase. However, please let them know that the 2-Year Old Project will discon-tinued after the 2019 State Fair Horse Show. The 3-Year Old Project has been expanded. It will also have three total phases - Phase 1 is rail work, Phase 2 is a pattern, and Phase 3 is an interview. 4-Hers involved in the 3-Year Old Project should plan to participate in all three phases at this year's state fair.

Come Fly with Us at the 2018 Kansas 4-H Insect Spectacular! Come fly with us! It’s time to get registered for the 26th Kansas 4-H Insect Spectacular, which will be held Friday and Saturday June 22nd and 23rd. The event will take place at the Sedgwick County Zoo in Wichita, Kansas. Learn about collecting, storing, identify-ing, and pinning your insects for exhibit. All levels of experience are encouraged to attend, from beginning to advanced. This is a fun event, designed to encourage curiosity and the sharing of knowledge. This year’s event will feature several sessions specifically on Lepidoptera, otherwise known as butterflies! The workshop is open to all youth and adult volunteers interested in 4-H entomology. One parent from each family must register and attend with children.

The $65 registration fee includes lunch and snack Saturday, bottled water, class materials, t-shirt and handouts. Younger siblings under 4-H age, spouses, etc. that may be coming along, but not participating in the classes will need to pay a fee of $20.00. This will pay for the meal and snack Saturday, but does not include a shirt. Registration closes June 1st. Kansas 4-H Horseless Horse Questions have come concerning the Horseless Horse project below are clarifications based on learning and risk management.

State Fair Opportunities for 4-H Shooting Sports Members Kansas 4-H Shooting Sports is expanding exhibit opportunities for 4-H members at the Kansas State Fair. Check the Kansas 4-H State Fair 4-H Shooting Sports division to learn more about the specific details. Along with promotional posters and educational dis-plays, the 2018 Fair will offer a 4-H Shooting Sports notebooks class that was recommended by the 4-H Shooting Sports Task Force. The notebooks for this class are to highlight a phase, result, story or information about 4-H Shooting Sports. Additionally, all entries, promotional posters, educational displays and notebooks are to incorporate the 4-H Clover and KSRE branding with the Kansas 4-H Shooting Sports emblem. The Kansas 4-H Shooting Sports logo can be found on the 4-H Shooting Sports web page.

Another opportunity available for sharing individual mastery of 4-H Shooting Sports - the 4-H Public Presentation Division offers 4-H Shooting Sports members a chance to share their knowledge from the stage. There are specific safety rules that must be followed and shooting sports-related entries must inform the State 4-H Office of entry to meet requirements. Participants must follow Kansas State Law regarding firearms listed in the General Rules section of this Fair Book and use 4-H Shooting Sports minimum standards and best management practices will be followed.

Kansas 4-H Dog Agility Changes The purpose of canine agility is to provide an opportunity for teams to compete in a fun activity that challenges both the dog and 4-H’er. Different obstacles and courses present unique tests of speed, confidence, technical skills, athleticism, balance, communica-tion, attentiveness, distance, and directional control. Our task as leaders is to incorporate all these elements while still maintaining a fun safe environment for the dogs and handlers. There has been concern about the safety of the “Closed” or “Chute Tunnel” due to the potential for fast moving dogs to become entangled in the length of sheet they must push through to exit. To remove this risk while still providing the same variety of obstacles for the teams to navigate, the decision was made to alter the design to eliminate the possibility of a dog stepping on or becoming trapped or tangled in the material in any way.

Effective October 1, 2018, there will be a mandatory change to the specifications of the Closed Tunnel currently used in all levels of 4-H agility. Rather than a long chute attached to the end of the barrel, the sheet should be hemmed so that it is NO MORE than 6 inches longer than the height of the barrel or frame. For example, on a barrel of 24” in diameter, the sheet will be no more than 30”. These changes may be made immediately, but MUST be completed for the next 4-H year that begins on October 1st. 4-H Barn Quilt Workshop

The Marais des Cygnes Extension District will be hosting two 4-H/Youth Barn Quilt workshops on June 12th in Paola and July 13th in Mound City, each will run from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Linn County 4-H Building. At the Barn Quilt Workshop youth will paint a 2’ x

2’ wood board in a quilt block design. These barn quilts are great to display outdoors on barns and can be entered in the County Fair in the Visual Arts division. This workshop is

open to youth 10 years of age and up, and adults are welcomed to stay and assist their child.

• All paints, boards and supplies will be provided • Please bring a hairdryer to assist in drying the paint

• Wear Clothes that can be painted in • Lunch will be provided

• Class size is limited to 15 participants

2018 Summer Ag Adventure Challenge

The Kansas State Fair wants to encourage students to learn more about Kansas agriculture. Farmers feed and clothe the world. Farmers today are raising more food with fewer resources. It is

estimated that by 2050, we’ll need to feed two billion more people. Understanding how and where your food comes from is important. The Fair wants to help students connect with the people who grow their food.

Agriculture is an important piece of our past and a critical part of our future. According to the Kansas Department of Agriculture, there are more than 60,000 farms in Kansas which generate

more than $18.5 billion in Agriculture output. On average, Kansas is the largest wheat producing state, producing 333,600,000 bushels of wheat in 2017. Nearly one-fifth of all wheat grown in the

United States is grown in Kansas. Additionally, one 60-pound bushel of wheat provides about 42 pounds of white flour, enough for about 70, one pound loaves of white bread.

There are 12 agriculture adventure stops listed on the back. You choose 6 of these stops to visit between May 1 and August 15, 2018. You can mail, email or bring your completed adventure sheet to the Kansas State Fair. All adventure sheets turned in by August 15 will receive a KSF

Agriculture Fun Pack. Your name will also be put into a drawing for a free Kids Club ticket package to attend the 2018 Kansas State Fair.

Tips for Exhibiting

Recipe Sources

Recipes must be from an Approved Source. You cannot use recipes from the internet or old family recipes as the sci-

ence of Food Preservation has changed. All books should be newer than 2012.

The Following Recipe Sources are approved:

USDA Complete Guide of Home Canning

So Easy To Preserve

Ball Blue Book (Current Edition Preferred, but cannot be older than 2012.)

Ball Complete Book of Home Preserving (Current Edition Preferred, but cannot be older than 2012.)

Food Preservation Publications from K-State Research & Extension

Packaged Mixes (You have to follow the Directions exactly, no adding ingredients not called for or changing the

amounts) Examples of Packaged Mixes include Pectin, Mrs. Wages, etc.

Headspace requirements

Jellied Fruit Products need 1/4” Headspace (Pectin might call for 1/8” but that is too close to the lid)

Fruits, Tomatoes, & Pickles need 1/2” Headspace

Low-acid foods need 1 to 1 1/4” Headspace

Processing Jars

Use 1,000 feet Processing time for all of Marais des Cygnes District. Recipes in So Easy to Preserve, Ball Blue Book,

and Ball Complete Book of Home Canning are written with processing instructions for altitudes below 1,000 feet.

Instructions for adjusting for altitude are in the general instructions in the front of the books.

Tomatoes must have added acid to make them safer.

Salsa should only be canned in pints.

Use the correct size jar for the recipe. Quarts cannot be used if the recipe only gives instructions for pints.

Preparing Exhibits

Use only clear Jars (no colored).

Jars and Lids must match. Ex. Ball Jars need Ball Lids, Kerr Jars need Kerr Lids.

Rings should always be on jar.

Use NEW Food Preservation Labels. These are available at either Marais des Cygnes District Office.

Bring the Recipe with your exhibit. Publication Dates should be on the recipe along with source information.

Jerky

You must heat the meat that you are using for jerky to 160°F before you begin drying it.
