    MarathonEssential Questions:

What does a situation look like that may be represented by a periodic model?

What strategies could I use to predict what will happen in the future?

    Aim:

You are responsible for organizing a marathon in 2015 your city to raise money for your chosen charity. You want to select the date so as to maximize the participants that will come from all over the world to

compete. You will therefore, will have positive weather conditions.

The committee suggests that the race is on the 15th October 2015.

You need to justify to the race committee that your choice of dates for the race is preferable.

    Investigating my City

Select the city in the world where you are organizing the marathon & research the weather patterns atwww.weather.com

Consider- What does it mean to have reasonable weather conditions for your city?

Select a suitable set of weather data that will help plan the best weather conditions for your data. (Dont

forget to obtain the citation information!)

Plotthe data using technology selecting suitable axes.Define the independent and dependent variables.

How can I analyze my data to help me select my race data?

I will develop an algebraic model to help me with my prediction.

My knowledge of graphical transformations can help me.

Sketch a function of best fit over your data.

Describe the shape of the graph in detail. Things to consider may be:

Does the graph looks look like a sine or a cosine graph? What graphical transformations can you see? Give details.

Can I determine the period and amplitude of the graph?

    The standard form of a sine function is sin( ( ))= + +y A B x C D .Describe the effect of each constant A, B, C and D on the original sine graph.

Use your knowledge of transformations to develop an equation to effectively model the data for your

    weather conditions.

Will the committee accept my recommendation?

Is my equation a reasonable model from which to make predictions?

Use technology to find the sine function of best fit.

Discuss the accuracy of your model and comment on any adjustments that may be needed.

Modify your equation model if necessary.

Justify your equation model to the race committee.

    Planning the Race Day

How can I use my model to make a suitable prediction for race day?

Use your graph or model to determine a suitable day for the marathon.

Use your equation model topredictthe weather for the day suggested by the committee.

Compare your chosen day to the day suggested by the committee.

Form apersuasive argumentto be presented to the committee in support of your selected day.

    Extension

You may consider modeling more than one set of weather data to form an even more solid argument to

    present to the race committee.

It is expected that you would use Graph software for graphs. Other than that, your presentation format is open-

ended your presentation can be typed or hand-written, a poster, a booklet, a video etc.
