Step 1

Cut 6 pieces of 20cm 22 gauge round wire. These will be referred to as the base wires.

Hold these wires parallel and horizontal, with ends even to one another.

Mark or note 9 cm from the left. This will be the starting point for the weaveas detailed in the following steps.

Step 2

Cut a 400cm piece of 28 gauge round wire. This will be referred to as the weaving wire.

Leave a small tail for leverage and coilonce or twice around the bottom base wire (or base wire 1), at the mark noted in the previous step.

Step 3

Wrap the weaving wire over base wires 1 and 2, between 2 and 3, behind2, then between 1 and 2.

Step 4

Wrap the weaving wire over base wires 2 and 3, between 3 and 4, behind3, then between 2 and 3.

Step 5

Wrap the weaving wire over base wires 3 and 4, between 4 and 5, behind4, then between 3 and 4.

Step 6

Wrap the weaving wire over base wires 4 and 5, between 5 and 6, behind5, then between 4 and 5.

Step 7

Wrap the weaving wire over base wires 5 and 6, behind 5 and 6, then between 4 and 5.

Step 8

Wrap the weaving wire over base wire 5, between 5 and 6, behind 4 and 5, then between 3 and 4.

Step 9

Wrap the weaving wire over base wire 4, between 4 and 5, behind 3 and 4, then between 2 and 3.

Step 10

Wrap the weaving wire over base wire 3, between 3 and 4, behind 2 and 3, then between 1 and 2.

Step 11

Wrap the weaving wire over base wire 2, between 2 and 3, then behind 1 and 2.

Steps 3-11 completes one rotation of the 6/1 weave (single coils around a six wire base).

Page 6: Perched Owl Pendant...Perched Owl Pendant Level: Intermediate By: Nicole Hanna Materials & Tools 6 Pieces 20cm 22 Gauge Round Wire 1 Piece 3cm 14 Gauge Round Wire (Perch) 1 Piece 400cm

Step 12

Complete two rotations of the 6/1 weave.

Step 13

Create a small clockwise loop with thebottom base wire, just to the right of the weave.

Create a small counter-clockwise loop with the top base wire, just to the right of the weave.

These loops should be no bigger than 3mm in size.

Note how the wires are parallel to one another upon completion of this step.

Step 14

Complete another 15 rotations of the 6/1 weave.

With fingers, pinch the ends of the weave in towards one another. This creates a compact and finished look, while the compression adds stability to the design. This compression should be done whenever a weave is completed.

With wire cutters, trim the tail left at the beginning of the weave and discard. Using needle nose pliers, pinch the trimmed end flush against the base wire around which it is wrapped. This will prevent the end from catching clothing or scratching skin when worn. This trim and pinch method should be utilized whenever a weaving wire is cut.

Step 15

To the right of the 6/1 weave, separate the wires as shown, with the two top wires bent upwards slightly, the two bottom wires bent downwards slightly, and the two middle wires extending straight out to the right.

Step 16

Cut one 3cm piece of 14 gauge round wire.

As an option, this wire can be hammered on each end to create “paddles”.

Hold the 3cm piece of 14 gauge wire (which will become the perch for the owl), just to the right of the 6/1 weave,on top of the base wires.

Step 17

Coil each of the two inner base wires three times around the perch. These create the feet of the owl. These coils should move in opposite directions from one another. These two wires can be trimmed at any time, or carried back over the front of the owl in later steps for added texture.

Note that there is 2-3mm of space between theperch and the end of the weave. This space will be necessary in the following steps.

Trim the weaving wire and set aside for use in a later step.

Step 18

To the left of the 6/1 weave, separate the base wires in the same way as in Step 15.

Add an 8mm closed jump ring to the two inner base wires.

Step 19

Bend the two inner base wires around the jump ring to secure the ring in place. The upper of these two wires will line up parallel to the other two upper base wires, and the lower of these two inner wires will line up parallel to the other two lower base wires.

This creates two sets of base wires, with an inner, middle and outer wire. One set above the jump ring and one set below the jump ring.

Step 20

With the weaving wire (set aside in Step 17), leave a small tail for leverageand coil once or twice around the outertop base wire.

Step 21

These three base wires above the jumpring are now labeled 1-3, left to right, for the purposes of demonstrating the following weave.

Wrap the weaving wire over base wires 3 and 2, between 2 and 1, then behind 2 and 3.

Step 22

Wrap the weaving wire over base wires 3 and 2, between 2 and 1, behind2, then between 2 and 3.

Step 23

Wrap the weaving wire over base wires 2 and 1, behind 1 and 2, then between 2 and 3.

Step 24

Wrap the weaving wire over base wires 1 and 2, then behind all three base wires.

Steps 21-24 completes one rotation of the 2/2 weave (two coils around two wires, twice).

Step 25

Complete 20 rotations of the 2/2 weave.

Trim the tail left at the beginning of the weave and discard.

Step 26

Curve the 2/2 weave towards the right, over the top of the 6/1 weave.

As the 2/2 weave approaches the perch, curve the weave in towards the feet.

Trim the weaving wire and set aside for use in a later step.

Page 11: Perched Owl Pendant...Perched Owl Pendant Level: Intermediate By: Nicole Hanna Materials & Tools 6 Pieces 20cm 22 Gauge Round Wire 1 Piece 3cm 14 Gauge Round Wire (Perch) 1 Piece 400cm

Step 27

Run the 2/2 weave wire ends between the two feet, from front to back, then around the back of the three upper base wires to the right of the 6/1 weave.

Step 28

With the weaving wire (set aside in Step 26), complete 20 rotations of a 2/2 weave utilizing the three base wires below the jump ring, to the left of the 6/1 weave.

Secure in the same manner explained in Step 27.

Step 29

This step will be worked on the two bottom base wires, to the right of the 6/1 weave, separated in Step 15.

With the weaving wire (still attached), coil three times around the bottom of these two base wires.

Page 12: Perched Owl Pendant...Perched Owl Pendant Level: Intermediate By: Nicole Hanna Materials & Tools 6 Pieces 20cm 22 Gauge Round Wire 1 Piece 3cm 14 Gauge Round Wire (Perch) 1 Piece 400cm

Step 30

Coil three times around both base wires.

Steps 29-30 completes one rotation of the 3/3 weave (three one-wire coils, three two-wire coils).

Step 31

Complete about 14 rotations to start, beginning and ending this weave with the one-wire coils.

Coils around a single wire are tighter than those around multiple wires, thus acting as a stopper and preventing the weave from traveling along the base wires.

Step 32

Curve the 3/3 weave in a counter-clockwise direction over the bottom 2/2 weave.

Begin to shape the 3/3 weave to followthe inside curve of the 2/2 weave.

The 3/3 weave should end at the loop created in Step 13.

Trim excess weaving wire and set aside for use in the following step.

Page 13: Perched Owl Pendant...Perched Owl Pendant Level: Intermediate By: Nicole Hanna Materials & Tools 6 Pieces 20cm 22 Gauge Round Wire 1 Piece 3cm 14 Gauge Round Wire (Perch) 1 Piece 400cm

Step 33

With the weaving wire (set aside in theprevious step), leave a small tail for leverage and coil about 2 cm (to start) on the bottom base wire closest the perch.

Once the coil is established, trim the tail left at the beginning and discard.

Step 34

Curve the coil in a counter-clockwise direction over the top of the bottom 2/2 weave, and shape the weave to restbetween the bottom 3/3 and 2/2 weave.

Step 35

The coils should end at the loop created in Step 13.

Trim the weaving wire and set aside for use in a later step.

Run the coiled base wire end and 3/3 weave wire ends, from front to back, through the center of the loop. Wrap them around the back of the loop to secure.

Page 14: Perched Owl Pendant...Perched Owl Pendant Level: Intermediate By: Nicole Hanna Materials & Tools 6 Pieces 20cm 22 Gauge Round Wire 1 Piece 3cm 14 Gauge Round Wire (Perch) 1 Piece 400cm

Step 36

Trim one of the three base wire ends, secured in the previous step (it doesn't matter which one). Pinch that trimmedend closed around the loop to secure.

Step 37

With the weaving wire (set aside in Step 35), complete about 11 rotations of a 3/3 weave, utilizing the two bottom base wires near the perch.

Note how the one-wire coils are on thebase wire closest the perch.

Step 38

Curve the 3/3 weave along the bottom of the 2/2 weave, towards the jump ring to the left of the 6/1 weave.

Add or subtract rotations as necessary to reach the jump ring.

Page 15: Perched Owl Pendant...Perched Owl Pendant Level: Intermediate By: Nicole Hanna Materials & Tools 6 Pieces 20cm 22 Gauge Round Wire 1 Piece 3cm 14 Gauge Round Wire (Perch) 1 Piece 400cm

Step 39

Run the ends of the 3/3 weave throughthe center of the jump ring, from front to back, then around the back of the jump ring to secure.

Trim weaving wire and set aside for use in a later step.

Step 40

Flip the piece to the back.

Trim excess base wire from the 3/3 weave wire ends and discard. Pinch the trimmed ends closed around the jump ring to secure the weave.

Step 41

With the weaving wire (set aside in Step 39), repeat steps 29-39, remembering to pay attention to the placement of the one-wire coils, and the direction of the curves, in order to mirror the opposite side.

Do not trim the weaving wire.

Page 16: Perched Owl Pendant...Perched Owl Pendant Level: Intermediate By: Nicole Hanna Materials & Tools 6 Pieces 20cm 22 Gauge Round Wire 1 Piece 3cm 14 Gauge Round Wire (Perch) 1 Piece 400cm

Step 42

With the weaving wire (still attached to the top two remaining base wires), complete about 6 rotations of a 3/3 weave.

Note how the one-wire coils are on theouter of these two base wires.

Step 43

Curve the 3/3 weave over the top of the jump ring, towards the left.

The end of the weave should reach the middle of the jump ring.

Run the ends of the 3/3 weave throughthe center of the jump ring, from front to back, then around the back of the jump ring to secure.

Trim the weaving wire and set aside for use in the following step.

Step 44

With the weaving wire (set aside in theprevious step), complete about 6 rotations of a 3/3 weave, utilizing the two bottom base wires, below the jump ring.

Note how the one-wire coils are on theouter of these two wires.

Curve the weave under the jump ring, towards the left, and secure as explained in the previous step.

Page 17: Perched Owl Pendant...Perched Owl Pendant Level: Intermediate By: Nicole Hanna Materials & Tools 6 Pieces 20cm 22 Gauge Round Wire 1 Piece 3cm 14 Gauge Round Wire (Perch) 1 Piece 400cm

Step 45

With the weaving wire (still attached), coil about one cm on either of the two bottom base wire ends.

Step 46

Curve both the coiled and uncoiled bottom base wires in a counter-clockwise direction over the top of the 3/3 weave.

The coils should reach the jump ring. Add or subtract coils as necessary.

Trim the weaving wire and set aside for use in a later step.

Step 47

Run the ends of the coiled and uncoiled base wires through the center of the jump ring, from front to back, and around the back of the jump ring to secure.

Trim excess base wire and pinch the trimmed ends closed around the jump ring.

Page 18: Perched Owl Pendant...Perched Owl Pendant Level: Intermediate By: Nicole Hanna Materials & Tools 6 Pieces 20cm 22 Gauge Round Wire 1 Piece 3cm 14 Gauge Round Wire (Perch) 1 Piece 400cm

Step 48

Using the weaving wire (set aside in Step 46), repeat Steps 45-47 with the top two remaining base wires.

Trim any excess wires and discard.

Add a 10mm 14 gauge jump ring to the closed jump ring, between the two eyes. This will act as the bail.

OPTIONAL

Instead of trimming the weaving wire in the previous step, use the remaining wire to add a tear drop bead to the jump ring between the two “eyes”, to create a beaded beak.
