community?

Hypothesis:  Community  members  will  show  an  increased  sense  of  security  in  and  around  Arboleda  de  Niños.

Conclusion:  Arboleda  de  Niños  has  created  a  stronger  sense  of  community    and  therefore  increased  percep6ons  of  safety.

There  is  a  greater  sense  of  community  in  the  neighborhood  now  than  before  Arboleda  de  Niños

was  built.

Waste management facilities negatively impact businesses !and thus the socio-economic status of the neighborhood. !

Biggest Problems about Waste Management!

%  of  people  surveyed

The consensus is that people are in control of how others !perceive their their neighborhood and their community. !

Waste management facilities are negatively affecting !the desirability of the neighborhood, affecting its residentʼs psyche, !

and with the lack of attention by the city government, a common community mentality is created, since they do not feel they have !

the power, money, or influence to make a difference. !The community is made up of low-income !

minorityand immigrant groups!

Research  ques+ons:  Is  there  a  difference  in  the  way  people  view  immigrants  vs.  refugees?  How  do  people  feel  about

welcoming  outsiders  (refugees)  into  their  society?

Main  findings:  Most  people  hear  the  term  refugee  and  think  of  the  camps  in  Africa  they  see  in  the  news.  When  they  come  to  NYC  they  are  grouped  into  the  larger  immigrant  community.

Research  Ques+on:  In  what  ways  is  street  performance  in  New  York  City  a  representa6on  of  some  of  the  most

fundamental  of  human  rights?

Hypothesis:  Laws  restric6ng  where  and  how  Buskers  can  perform  in  public  restrict  their  freedom  of  speech  and  expression  and  do  not  correlate  with  public  opinion  regarding  street  performers.

In  your  opinion  how  heavily  should  authori3es  restrict/  regulate  public  performances?

Blue:  Street  performers  should  have  full  access  to  public  space  within  the  city.    Red:  Street  performers  should  have  the  freedom  to  say  and  do  whatever  they  would  like  in  public  spaces.

Conclusion:  While  the  majority  of  the  public  approves  of  and  appreciates  Street  Performance,  they  also  believe  that  Buskers  need  to  be  regulated  by  authori6es  which  suggests  that  the  laws  alone  may  not  be  curtailing  the  basic  rights  that  Performers  deserve.

Research  Ques+on:  What  is  the  mo6va6on  behind  a  dona6on?

Hypothesis:  Donors  must  have  a  high  level  of  trust  when  making  dona6ons.

Conclusion:  Not  knowing  what  organiza6ons  or  direct  receivers  use  the  dona6ons  for  is  a  key  factor.    The  survey  revealed  a  strong  rela6onship  between  trust  and  the  receiving  organiza6ons  –  Trust  was  also  brought  up  in  the  FG:  one  of  the  par6cipants  indicated  that  they  do  not  know  what  street  performers  do  with  the  money  they  receive  and  for  that  reason  never  give  money  to  them.
