About SAE

SAE Creative Media Institute, with over 50 campuses in 27 countries, has been setting the global benchmark for creative media education since 1976. In Australia, we proudly offer government accredited certificates, diplomas, and bachelor degrees across six SAE Creative Media Institute, with over 50 campuses in 27 countries disciplines – Animation, Audio, Design, Film, Games, and Web & Mobile.

In Australia, SAE provides courses to students across six campuses in Brisbane, Byron Bay, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth.

At SAE we pride ourselves on delivering exceptional programs in world-class facilities. We ensure our students receive an outstanding education, internationally recognised qualifications, and industry-relevant skills.

Our graduates really do have the competitive edge.

SAE INTERNATIONALFollowing on from the success of SAE in Australia, the first international SAE campus was opened in London in 1985. As in Australia, in the international arena SAE proved to be highly successful in providing a quality, practical and theoretical curriculum to aspiring professionals in the music industry.

Not long after the London campus was opened, SAE Munich opened it’s doors. Munich was to be the first of many foreign language SAE Institutes worldwide.

SAE was well established in Europe, Asia and New Zealand by the mid-90s. The first of seven campuses opened in the USA in 1998.

All our courses follow the founding principles of SAE – high quality, industry-focused, practical and theoretical education options for creative and talented individuals.

I am a fan of using Flash and creating 2D animation, though 3D modelling and animation is also something I love to learn and improve upon.

I originally completed a Diploma of Screen and Media (Animation) at Qantm College years ago, and decided to get back into it with SAE. Who knew I would now be making a game! I loved the time I spent designing a game from scratch and hope to do it again.

Anything that requires creative thought and a chance to design something unique motivates me. I work for a quirky small business that breaths new life into workplace training videos. In my spare time I design and build custom motorcycles. Every bike is different, and one day I plan to own my own custom garage.

I’m a typical starving artist. I love drawing and modelling 3D assets, and I also like to tinker in Unity in my spare time.

I’m inspired mostly by anime and games and would like to make either or both in the future. Some of the major artists that inspire me include Feng Zhu, Kim Jung Gi and Scott Robertson.

I’m familiar with a wide variety of programs and regularly pick up new software. These include but aren’t limited to: 3DS Max, Blender, Photoshop, Krita, Flash, Premiere, After Effects, Unity and Unreal Engine 4.

On a very cold winter day in Ottawa, Canada, an Aussie musical theatre performer named Dave decided to venture out into the snow, across the frozen lake to watch Despicable Me. He was so mesmerised by whathe saw he thought to himself, ‘Yeah! I could do that for a living!’ And so begins his journey...David loves theatre, film and drama, and is also a huge Anime nerd. With a degree in Information Technology from Griffith University and a recently completed degree in Interactive Entertainment majoring in Animation, David plans to bring his creative talents for telling stories and his technical smarts together to merge into one super power. David hopes to make memorable movies and theatre that will inspire audiences.

I‘ve always been the one who sits on the sidelines and watches; the kid that likes the weird and wonderful. But still pretty rad.

I’ve loved studying animation and gaining some great new skills, but I’ve realised that my heart lies in the geeky world of comic books. One day I’ll have my own work published so the world can see what’s going on in my head.

I cannot be held responsible for what you find in there...

A passionate and dedicated illustrator and modeller, I have been playing video games since I could pick up a controller. Becoming a part of the games industry has always been my goal in life, and I’m excited to finally be there. I have four years experience as a freelance illustrator, and more recently, as a freelance 3D character artist.

I am a 2D and 3D animator who specialises in whimsical character animation, compositing, and scriptwriting. I have killer skills in the Adobe Suite, Toon Boom, 3DS Max, and I know how to stage an animated scene like a winner.

I’m available for freelance and studio work, animated music videos, animation commissions, as well as general chats about awesome animations that you’ve seen at various points in your life.

I’ve been playing games for as long as I can remember and have been interested in how they’re made ever since. Some say ‘making games isn’t meant to be fun,’ but I believe it to be a part of the creation process of building a game. You have to enjoy what you do in order to produce a quality product.

Originally I completed the Diploma of Screen and Media (Animation), but this year have completed the Bachelor of Animation with SAE. 3D Modelling environments and assets, animating 3D characters and composing music have been so much fun. I cannot wait to continue this work for a living. Real animations have curves!

As a 90’s kid, I was lucky enough to grow up during an important era in animation. I was always inspired to draw and create my own characters and worlds from an early age, and this was what led me towards pursuing a career in this industry.

I specialise in 3D modelling and animating for film and video games.

I’m an artist with a lot of ideas and ambitions and I like the freedom to use any medium necessary to enhance the narrative. I just graduated from the Bachelor of Audio, but I’m starting a new Bachelor of Film this year at SAE to compliment my aural skills with visual ones.

This year I’ll be launching my ‘Apeman’ multimedia project, beginning with the Fetal Dreams bundle that I produced for my final creative project. I’ve also been working closely with Brisbane recording artist, ‘Stranger’ to release his Polar Panorama EP which we produced and recorded together. I am currently working towards a series of fantasy audiobooks that I’ve been writing in my spare time.

I’ve recently started working with DOMC Mastering in Redcliffe and hope to scout some more bands to record and produce over the coming months.

Though I’m a competent engineer, I thrive most in the role of producer. I love bringing a concept to fruition in a cohesive, well branded manner and my experience and interest in visual/interactive media allows me to reinforce meaning and narrative in ways that sound alone cannot. I enjoy most aspects of audio from recording, mixing, mastering, film location recording and post production for film, animation and gaming.

Abel first honed his passion for audio as a young musician, blutak-ing his headphones to his guitar and overdubbing takes using his double tape deck and mic input!! Biting the bullet and engaging with the real deal has been a dream for him.

This new-found focus led him to establish his own business, ‘Hodie Audio,’ in 2013, which has already surpassed the expectations of clients such as Energex - Awards of Excellence, Souths Sunnybank Rugby League Club, The Institute for Urban Indigenous Health, The Indooroopilly Hotel, and AdLucem Media.

Abel has developed a wide reputation for delivering outstanding Live multi-track recordings with talent such as Captain Dreamboat, Baskervillain, Jouk Mistrow (formerly Rabbit), and The Lachlan Mitchell Sextet. He also specialises in unconventional design processes for audio, such as his motion control devices and sound design for animation, video and installation.

I have always had a passion for the technical side of production. Fromthis passion, I have grown into the production industry in different fieldsincluding audio, lighting, video and photography.

I come from a town 300km outside Brisbane, where there are not many companies or opportunities for work in the audio industry. While in school, a group of friends started a production company called ‘AJ Design & Production’ which became a standard point of contact for any events or functions within the town, including the town’s Carols by Candlelight, multicultural festivals and more.

In 2012 I moved to Brisbane to begin studying a Bachelor of Audio at SAE Brisbane. This allowed me to find causal and freelanceemployment in theatres and production companies during my studies. I have since worked at a number of festivals, concerts and functions from small to large.

My first passion is audio. I am a live front of house engineer by passion, while still always happy to work in all areas in the field. From my time at SAE, I have developed an interest in acoustics and how it interacts and affects my job.I have a basic to mid range of knowledge of lighting systems and am able to add my creative ideas to help solve problems.

While lighting is not my main passion, I do enjoy designing and operating lighting systems and seeing my work come to life, getting the wow factor from the audience.

I strive to continually expand my knowledge and skill set in every field, while learning and developing skills from others.

Through SAE I have learnt many skills with Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, inDesign in graphic design and illustration. Over the two years my skills have definitely developed into different styles of professionalism and creativity. I look forward to developing these skills further and gaining more real-world experience with graphic design.

I love creating. Anything from drawings and illustrations to designs, photography, plush toys and writing.

I try to find beauty in every possible place. Anything that can express creativity and emotion is something I want to try.

I have recently combined several of the above interests and completed my first self-published children’s book, ‘Benny and the Big Bear Band,’ completely written, illustrated and designed by yours truly.

Best suited to production management and producing media and arts, I am a skilled film director/producer heading up the creative team at a boutique marketing company in Brisbane.

I have many years experience in managing creative and sales teams, and am often complimented on my ability to think big picture. I am accountable for generating creative sparks, leading the team on new marketing schemes and managing projects until delivery.

My out-of-the-box thinking and utilising both sides of the brain enable me to be a key decision maker in many situations and support others with a similar level of demand. I am most happiest on set, snowboarding or scuba diving.

I’ve been fascinated by games from a young age, so its been a great opportunity to be able to study Games Design at SAE. To be able to turn the hobby of creating games into a profession has been a dream come true. I particularly enjoy level design and the design of ‘game feel,’ and I have been able to develop these skills over the duration of my studies.

I have particularly enjoyed working on my final project ‘Missing Jump’ and I’ve learnt so much about project management and design in the process. I look forward to working on similar projects in the future.

My philosophy is simple. Tackle a problem head on, take it step-by-step, work within your limitations and when you get stuck, know when to put the problem down so you can come at it from a fresh angle. It’s necessary to accept failure as long as the lesson is learnt, but also be able to pat yourself on the back for a job well done. I do two things - I create and I learn, each dependant on the other and both of equal importance. At any point I make sure I am engaged with at least one.

I evaluate whatever I am working on as pragmatically as possible and try to find the simplest solution that produces the greatest mileage. Above all, I like games. I like playing them, I like learning about them and most of all, I like making them. Simple as that.

I think about and develop video games. I used to mainly think about and play video games, but I thought it would be a good idea to take my passions and turn them into a career.

While I have a firm understanding of most game design principles incorporated into the development process of a video game, I like to think I specialise in the communication and problem solving aspects. While I am primarily a designer, I have assumed the role of the lead programmer on a number of projects I have worked on within and outside of SAE. This is mainly due to the lack of a dedicated programmer within my development group. However, I see this as a blessing instead of a curse, even though it may feel like a curse at times. By increasing my programming knowledge, especially in JavaScript, I am able to better grasp the connection between the design elements and the way they are incorporated through the use of programming. This provides less of a disconnect between the design and technical aspects of a project, and allows me to gain useful knowledge that could be applied in future endeavours.

For as long as I can remember I’ve been using computers and making things on them and with them. My passion began with working in and learning about photography and graphic design. However, I knew that graphic design alone couldn’t satisfy my appetite for design, so I decided that I would venture into the fast-paced web industry. I didn’t realise what I had gotten myself into until halfway through the course, when I realised how many opportunities are out there waiting for web designers and developers to grab.

My passion now lies in using creativity and technology to create disruptive and new ideas. My graphic design work includes typography, t-shirt print design and icon/logo design. My web design skills consist of user interface design, user experience design, interaction and responsive design. My web development skills consist of development using HTML5, css/scss, javascript/jquery and PHP.

I am Aaron Humphreys. Web developer, web designer and gamer. While most of my skills revolve around front-end development, I aim to be a full-stack developer and branch into mobile technologies as well.

I have always been interested in technology and I am always connected to the network, either at my computer or on my phone. I have been a gamer for as long as I can remember. My thirst for technology arose from a love of video games. In fact, it was while playing an online game that I become more interested and involved with websites and their creation. The game could be modified by this wonderful thing called JavaScript. Back then, it appeared to be magic. I have since learned to understand that it is actually not. However, being able to create interfaces that still give the illusion of magic to an audience is a satisfying experience for myself and those using it.

Thanks to my studies, I am now proficient with several web languages including HTML, CSS, JavaScript, jQuery, and PHP. I refuse to stop there though, and I intend to learn more languages and skills to use within the web and mobile fields. Learning new languages is both challenging and rewarding, the only question is, which challenge do I take next?

I hope that at some point in the future you will have a great experience on a website due to my handiwork.

My name is Andrew Newman and I’m a mobile application developer. My first published development work is an app called ‘On The Spot Fines’ which I completed during my internship. I also have a basketball scheduling app and two Lifeline applications in the works.

Mobile applications are becoming a huge industry, with every company wanting to show their business is high end by distributing across multiple platforms, and it’s very exciting to see where it might go.

Video games are a complex, modern medium that exist in an increasingly competitive market. With so many titles available, and so little time, the introductory moments are critical to capturing the player’s attention, interest, and imagination.

This is a podcast featuring subjective discussion, criticism and analysis of game design and development. Each week, the hosts roll a random game from their Steam libraries and play the first ten minutes. They discuss these experiences, as both players and developers, to see how successfully the games communicate with the player. They also compare and contrast these games with other pieces of media, and hope to encourage further conversations about video games as an ever-evolving art form.
