•MUET is an English language proficiency test to establish benchmark among Malaysian students.•Students are graded into 6 bands; band 1 (lowest) and band 6 (highest).•Students need to achieve a minimum grade offered by the courses in faculties in order to get selected to higher institution.•Problem rises as the total result of MUET plays a major role to determine students’ admission to university.

• There is limitation to the study as some students do not understand the questionnaire.
