ART 201G, Art Destination Studies: Africa1.0 unit, 1.0 hour lecture(GR or CR/NC)

F’09 The course will serve as an introduction to art history and to other related fields such as comparative religion, ancient history, and archaeology. It will complement offerings in the travel/tourism program to provide more information on visual and historical resources in selected geographical areas. It will serve as an introduction to several regions and time periods which are currently not part of the course offerings at this college, providing a basic orientation to the regions under study in addition to coverage of current debates and issues related to these areas. It is the seventh such course in this series.

HLTED 15, Stress: Causes, Symptoms, and Management1.0 unit, 1.0 hours lecture (GR or CR/NC)Acceptable for credit: CSU

Stress: Identifying symptoms and methods for self-management.

0837.00

F’09 Recent studies show that more than half of Americans are more stressed now than they were six months ago (Atlanta health survey, October, 2008). The stress survey, conducted by Booth Research, focused primarily on Americans’ self-reported sources of stress and methods for coping with stress, as well as the correlation between stress and physical health. In fact, 85 percent of respondents reported they believe stress weakens their body’s immune system; women were more likely than men to be aware of that connection. Additionally, among 18 – 24 year olds, 64% responded that they experience daily stress. We would provide an invaluable resource for our students to offer a course which discusses the causes, symptoms, and techniques for managing daily stress.

(for all 31 MMART courses effective Summer 2009):

We are changing prerequisites to recommended preparation on the courses listed.

After ten plus years of experience in offering our Multimedia programs, it is clear to us that the prerequisites for MMART have been drawn too narrowly by only indicating our own specific courses as acceptable. In addition, the students have difficulty challenging the prerequisites because of the lack of clear course substitutions at other institutions. Given the growth of multimedia/ computer skills in the population over the last ten years, students do, for the most part, possess the necessary entry skills. Therefore, it makes sense to convert the prerequisites to recommended preparation as a guideline to students rather than a barrier to enrollment. If or when problems arise, our past experiences have shown that they can be easily handled through a discussion between the individual student and instructor.

F09 This advanced spelling course, the third of three spelling levels, will target college-/transfer-level students, who depend upon accurate spelling for academic writing. Students at this level may continue to depend upon translators and two-language dictionaries to find the appropriate English word to use in their writing, but, in order to become truly competent with the language, they need to use an English-only dictionary for two purposes: (1) to find the meanings of new words that they find in their reading and (2) to find meanings and spellings of new words that they overhear in daily conversation. The focus of spelling at this level will be upon using both vocabulary and dictionary skills to learn about new words (e.g., their spellings, pronunciations, definitions, conjugations, and parts of speech). This is a stand-alone course.

F09 This introductory spelling course, the first of three spelling levels, will address the needs of both basic skills students, who must learn to write intelligibly in their daily contacts, and college-/transfer-level students, who depend upon accurate spelling for academic writing. Mastering English spelling is a challenging process for anyone, but especially so for ESL students, who, in addition to integrating traditional phonics rules and their exceptions, must simultaneously learn to pronounce and recognize American sounds, study the spelling, meaning and usage of each new word, and unravel confounding aspects of the language which most native speakers understand implicitly. The focus of spelling at this level will be upon sounds and their correlation to spelling patterns. This is a stand-alone course.

ESL 256BSpelling 2: Difficult-to-Spell Words5 units, 5 hours lecture (GR or CR/NC)Prerequisite: ESL 252B or appropriate placement at ESL level 3 or higher based upon multiple measures and ESL 256A.Study of the spelling of American English: Focus upon difficult-to-spell words.4930.82

F09 This intermediate spelling course, the second of three spelling levels, will help basic skills students but will primarily target college-/transfer-level students, who depend upon accurate spelling for academic writing. Mastering English spelling is a challenging process for anyone, but especially so for ESL students, who, in addition to distinguishing between phonics and sight words, must simultaneously learn to pronounce and recognize American sounds, study the spelling, meaning and usage of each new word, and unravel confounding aspects of the language which most native speakers understand implicitly. The focus of spelling at this level will be upon sight words (words that ignore phonics rules) and on words built from word parts, i.e. prefixes, suffixes and word roots.
