WHAT IS PEP?

1. WHAT DOES PEP STAND FOR AND WHAT IS THE GOAL OF THE CONFERENCE?

2. WHY DO YOU NEED TO BE A PART OF THIS CONFERENCE?

3. HOW CAN I GET INVOLVED?

This conference will bring two very important aspects of mining together; the

production hub of the north and the financial hub of the south. Not only will

there be a focus on everything PEP related, but we will highlight the importance

of all three components with respect to both indigenous and non-indigenous

businesses.

The question really becomes; Why wouldn’t you want to be a part of PEP?

There are 3 ways to be a part of PEP:

I. Sponsor

II. Attend

III. Purchase a tradeshow booth

Or do all 3! This is truly an event you won’t want to miss.

PEP stands for Procurement, Employment and Partnerships. The goal

of this conference/tradeshow will be to:

I. develop relationships that result in procurement opportunities. We will create a practical platform in which panel participants will discuss topics such as; how to identify critical components of an RFP to ensure you are including important information in your proposal, how to successfully grow your supply chain and much more;

II. address employment challenges for Northern Ontario businesses and communities to ensure that Northern and Southern Ontario businesses will be able to maximize their economic potential for mining projects in Northern Ontario;

III. how to successfully manage partnerships with a focus on maximizing local inclusion in mining, through partnership with indigenous and non-indigenous businesses.

PROCUREMENTGeorgian Room AThe mining and infrastructure sectors are increasingly challenged to increase local and Indigenous content on their projects. Often the supply chain of local Indigenous and non-Indigenous businesses is small and spread out geographically. Learn from others who have successfully designed and executed local procurement frameworks as well as from businesses that have been involved in the tendering process. Whether your company is struggling with local inclusion and tender writing, or has had success in the past, this session will provide you enlightening tips on how to best structure your procurement program and tendering process to maximize local content. Or if your Company has struggled with how to find bid opportunities, how to prepare a winning bid, or is interested in sharing experiences with past bidding opportunities, this session will be of interest.

EMPLOYMENTGeorgian Room BAcross Ontario, a paradox exists where employers struggle to hire qualified employees while youth unemployment and underemployment continues to rise. The skills shortage continues to offset business operations and innovation. If the mining and infrastructure sectors are to remain a powerhouse of the Ontario economy, and leaders in global innovation, new approaches to training and employment are critical. How do we ensure we are training people for the right jobs? How do we ensure that trained job candidates are finding the right opportunities? Who pays for training? How are the Trades Unions contributing? This session will take a forward looking stance to Canada s economic future, by discussing ways to prepare students and the workforce for the jobs of tomorrow so that all regions across Ontario have access to the skilled labour workforce required to compete in the global economy.

PARTNERSHIPSGeorgian Room CPartnerships between Northern and Southern Ontario, and indigenous and non-indigenous businesses, have the potential to reduce many of the burdens of doing business in the North and to provide opportunities that are often difficult to develop at the last minute. By making mutually beneficial connections ahead of bid opportunities, businesses can address capacity shortages, and the inclusion of local businesses will enable outside companies to learn best practices in Northern mining and infrastructure. Partnerships transcend the challenges of geography, and their fostering has the potential to channel more inclusive growth all across Ontario. Join us for a session in which we will elaborate on all of the advantages of partnerships, helpful tips for initializing them, and best practices learned from experience.

PANEL 1Shaping Ontario’s Competitive and Innovative Resource Economy In a time of low global commodity prices and sluggish economic growth, resource companies are feeling more than ever the effects of global economic trends. Amongst the global challenges of competition, protectionism and complex international trade frameworks, Canadian resource companies, supported by our governments, are finding innovative ways to compete. With the rich resources yet to be tapped, and the opportunities to remain one of the world’s strongest competitors in the natural resources sector, Ontario businesses stand to gain. Join the discussion of our experienced panelists as they discuss the challenges, barriers and opportunities for innovation that will help business adapt to the changing economy.

PANEL 2Growing Northern Ontario’s Supply ChainAs the resource and infrastructure sectors expand, and with the increasing globalization of supply, the challenges associated with growing local and regional supply chains increases concurrently. Traditional approaches to procurement will tend to reinforce traditional patterns of purchasing. More responsive and innovative approaches to growing local and regional supply chains are required to provide cost and technological efficiencies and economic stimulus. This panel discussion by some of industry’s leading experts on supply change management, will help us learn about improving our distribution networks, harnessing the potential of information conduits and producing more effective, standardized procedures to facilitate the flow of supplies within our regional economy.

PANEL 3Creating Jobs: Training and Employing Northerners As mining projects such as the Ring of Fire continue to move forward, employing local indigenous and non-indigenous workers is crucial to the success of Northern Ontario’s economic development. What training is the most effective and when do we start? How best do we train recruits to provide them with the skills employers need to address our skilled labour shortages? How do we compete globally for the brightest and best? Join our panel discussion on best practices for training and recruiting local workers; how to overcome the challenges associated with hiring in the North; and how best to turn challenges into opportunities for northerners.
