In April, the Arizona State Board of Education announced the 2016-17 A-F labels for schools statewide. The new A-F Account-ability System, which was adopted in 2016 by the Arizona Department of Ed-ucation, determines school labels using a wide range of academic measurements including AzMERIT tests re-sults and academic growth. Additional factors used to determine a school label includes the amount of stu-dents with proficient scores and improved test scores from year to year. Peoria Unified is pleased with the scores: nine A, 19 B and five C elementary school labels; and one A, five B and 1 C high school labels.

Three Peoria Unified em-ployees were awarded top honors in Support Services, Teaching and Administra-tion during the 33rd Annual Pride of Peoria Employee Awards Celebration, pre-sented by Lifetouch, on April 30. Human Resources Su-pervisor Carmen Miranda, Oasis Elementary teacher Jim Myers and Director of Food & Nutrition Sandra Schossow, were awarded the 2018 Raymond S. Kellis

Leadership Awards – the highest honor a Peoria Uni-fied employee can receive. These three honorees were surprised with the award at the event. A Pride of Peoria award is presented to the top one percent of district staff. This year, 38 Peoria Unified employees were publicly honored as Pride of Peoria award recipients for contri-butions to their schools and the district. Teachers and support staff are nominat-ed by their colleagues for outstanding service. They

come from different sites, represent different career lengths, work in a variety of positions, yet share one common attribute: They

A portable workplace that attaches to a wheelchair won the EPICS Innovation Award for exceptional engineering for team: (pictured) Cole Warren, Stone Hunter, Cole Maxey, Christine Andes, Colby Cox and Leilani Lam. Overall first place of the CISCO Innovation Challenge went to team members: Dakarai Alberty, Adrien Frisque and Koby Caputo for a badge-and-go system that helps teachers locate students in an emergency; a device that measures exhaust emissions earned a second place win for: Alex Divito, Noah Lamarca, Jake Kobat and Michael Leung. The Peoria Unified Governing Board has retained the services of McPherson & Jacobson, LLC to conduct a nation-wide superintendent search, and requests

community input about the qualities we seek of our next superintendent.

It’s likely that during unsettling times, while

Arizona is facing a class-r o o m c r i s i s , a n d there is violence i n t h e n e w s d a i l y ,

that your kids are feeling the stress. I found good strategies at commonsensemedia.org that might help parents sup-port their kids when news is upsetting and things feel out of control. First, remember that our kids learn how to cope and react by watching us. Truth be told, they usually roll with the punches better than us older folks. If your kids are little,

Kathy KnechtBoard Member

consider keeping the news away from them and spend time together doing happy things. It’s harder to shelter mid-dle school-aged kids, but you can filter what they see and hear. Consider your child’s maturity and tem-perament and be willing to answer questions and listen to concerns. Ask older kids what they’ve heard and what they think. Let them express themselves. Kids of any age can feel empowered when they can do something use-ful: write a letter, volunteer for a cause, help someone. Know that Peoria Unified is committed to your child’s success every day. Loving, skilled professionals have dedicated their lives to en-suring our kids are pre-pared to shape tomorrow. I, for one, am grateful.

Teach Kids Skills to Cope with Stress

Peoria Unified has received a Healthy Ar-izona Worksite Gold award for its efforts to positively affect the health and well-being of its employees and family members by implementing com-prehensive worksite wellness strategies. The Healthy Arizona Worksite Program is a public health initia-tive developed by the Arizona Department of Health Services and the Maricopa Country Department of Public Health.

Governing Board Members & Meetings Peoria Unified’s Governing Board consists of five elected members who serve voluntarily and reside within the school district. School board elections are held in conjunction with state and federal elections every two years. Governing Board meetings are typ-ically held at 6 p.m. on the second and fourth Thursday of the month at the District Administration Center, 6330 W. Thunderbird Road, unless otherwise posted.
