Cocooning, so preva-lent in North America at the turn of thiscentury, underwent a dramatic transfor-mation after 9/11. Today, we still love tospend time at home, but now we do it in agroup and call it hiving. Hiving meansmaking connections with others, keepingin touch with family, friends, and workcolleagues, all from the comfort of ourown homes.

The hiving trend has had an influence onhow we decorate our homes: cozinessmust now go beyond the bedroom andbasement den. We want our spaces to havean uncluttered but friendly and welcomingfeel. No longer content to entertain our-

selves in isolation, now we prefer boardgames and social occasions.

Open plan homes and multifunctionalrooms are perfect for this style of living.The big, heavy coffee table has given wayto little side tables that can be easily movedaround as the occasion demands. Oversizedottomans make perfect footrests, but theyalso make great extra seating for sur-prise visitors.

Different variations of neutral paint tonesare making a comeback on walls. White isomnipresent, as well as “non-colours”, suchas shades of grey, sand, cement, graphite,and ivory. To complement that simplicity,colourful accents straight from natureabound, including raspberry, apple green,

and sunny yellow.

After cocooning comes hiving

Akitchen island is a must-have in today’sideal home.Any cook who has one could-n’t live without it! An island is the solu-tion to a shortage of working space, and itis a great way to add storage cupboardsto small kitchens. Even the smallest ofhomes can accommodate an island, withthe many sizes and styles on offer: butch-er blocks, mobile units, breakfast bars,and multipurpose islands with sinks orcooking ranges built in.

The first step in choosing the right onefor your kitchen is to carefully calculatethe available space. You won’t want toblock the flow of kitchen traffic or hin-der access to appliances. Experts suggesta clearance of at least 36 inches aroundthe island and 24 inches of work surface.The height of the island should be com-parable to that of the countertops, unlessa breakfast counter is to be included inthe plan. In that case, the height of thissection should be adjusted to that of thechairs or stools.

To maximize storage space, the islandshould be planned according to what itwill be used for. For example, largedrawers for storing knives and choppingboards are ideal if the island is to be usedfor food preparation. If the island is to be

placed between the kitchen and the din-ing area, then storage space should beplanned on both sides to facilitate accessto dishes and utensils, for example.

Among the new trends in kitchen islandsare “peninsulas”, which are oversizedislands with one end attached to a wall,allowing circulation on three sides. Theyoffer lots of storage space and canaccommodate a dishwasher or a winefridge. Many people will even add anextra sink, which is useful when prepar-ing foods — especially if the chef has afew assistants.

The perfect kitchen island

A kitchen island is a definite mustin any functional kitchen.

Household appliances are constantlyevolving to be greener, sleeker, and moreadapted to any kind budget. New featuresand varied designs make shopping forone of these machines a real experience.

These days, more than 90 percent of dish-washers are electronic, with many pro-grams to precisely control washing inten-sity. Giant strides have also been made inreducing water and electricity consump-tion. Just 15 years ago a dishwasher cycleused an average of 30 litres of water,while today 13 litres is sufficient. Manydishwashers are now less noisy and havelarger holding capacities than they usedto. Some models can wash up to 15 placesettings, which is 25 percent more than aregular-sized machine.

The new generation of washing machinesis undeniably more economical, practical,and ecological than any other. They guar-antee great performance in both time andenergy consumption. High performanceelectronics are featured on both front-or top-loading washers, with sensors toadjust the required amounts of water andelectricity during the wash, rinse, and spincycles. Today’s washing machine can justabout do it all: automatic load weighing,systems to reduce water consumption,suds detection during spin cycles, andsystems to control overflows and leaks.Some even offer closed-door ventilationso that a forgotten load of damp washedclothes won’t start to smell musty!

Finally, for all those households thatwould love to have aclothes dryer but justdon’t have enough room,the vertical washer-dryercombo has also madetechnological leaps andbounds and now offerstwice the performance inhalf the space.

Lighting makes all the difference in theatmosphere of a home. Each room requiresdifferent lighting, depending on its use.Outside of task-specific lights, such as thoseused for reading or near a work surface, thegoal is generally to enhance your space andmake it feel warm and inviting to the eyes.

A dining room or kitchen table should belit by a ceiling light or chandelier; recessedlighting or spot lights should only be usedto highlight a work of art, a piece of fur-niture, or a decorative object. Rememberthat recessed lighting should be pointedtowards a wall in order to create indirectlight and not be dazzling to the eyes. Floorlamps or directional tracked lights willhelp to produce diffused, more intimatelighting in a room. When deciding on anytype of ceiling light, make sure there issome headroom, with no exposed bulbs tocreate glare.

In a dining room, the bottom of a chande-lier should be at least 30 inches from thetable, and over an island there should be atleast 34 inches of headroom. A few simplecalculations can serve as a guide to the rightsize of chandelier. First of all, measure thewidth of the table and subtract 12 inches.The result will determine the ideal maxi-mum width of the chandelier, while the

minimum width should be half the widthof the table.

Lastly, keep in mind the size of the room aswell as the height of the ceiling when decid-ing on the necessary brightness (wattage) ofyour lighting. The higher the ceiling, themore wattage you will need, unless youhave tracked directional light bulbs. If thisrule isn’t followed, the light will probablybe overwhelmed by the space.

The British Columbia Real Estate Asso-ciation (BCREA) reports that the dollar vol-ume of homes sold through Multiple Listing Service® (MLS®) in BC dipped 7.6 per cent to $2.1 billion in January compared to the same month last year. A total of 3,976 homes traded hands on the MLS® over the same pe-riod, down 3.9 per cent. The average MLS® residential price was 3.8 per cent lower at $527,219 compared to January 2011.

“Increased market activity outside the Lower Mainland in January was offset by few-

er sales in Vancouver and the Fraser Valley,” said Cameron Muir, BCREA Chief Econo-mist. MLS® Residential sales rose 7 per cent to 1,620 units outside the Lower Mainland, while declining 10 per cent to 2,356 units in Vancouver and the Fraser Valley.

“While provincial sales activity was down in January from year ago levels, consumer de-mand has posted modest improvement since last fall, driven by low mortgage interest rates and gradually improving economic condi-tions,” added Muir.
