Happily things have changed and,these days, everyone agrees that exteriorlighting improves with refinement. Thiscould explain the interest of homeownerswho can extend long summer eveningsspent in their backyards.

Exterior lighting can be divided intothree categories:• Functional, to light the front door,

steps, garage, shed, etc.;• Security, to discourage unwelcome

visitors;• Decorative, to highlight a sculpture

or shrub.

The two most popular lamps availableon the market today are the little solarlamps that are a favourite for manybecause they are so reasonably priced,and the low voltage (12 volts) lightingthat is connected to the home’s electricalsystem. The choice is very personal andcan very well do the job.

Be careful about the intensity of anylights destined for decorative purposes.The idea is to create a soft, nocturnalatmosphere not to recreate daylight.

When highlighting plants and objects,it’s preferable if the source of light isinvisible. Moreover, installing a timer onany outdoor lights helps to save energy.

Making the most of a small backyard

If your backyard isn’t very big it’s evenmore important to plan the layout well.Start by making a scaled plan of your entireproperty on a quad-ruled sheet of paper,adding existing elements such as the backdoor, the windows, the side entrance,fences, trees, rocks, etc.

Now is the time to decide what you want toinclude in the landscape design, as well as thespace required for each element. You couldincorporate a children’s play area, a gardenshed, a utility area, a terrace, an area for adultactivities which could include a hot tub, avegetable garden and flower beds. Someitems may have to be eliminated from the listdepending on your priorities and the avail-able space.

On another quad-ruled sheet, sketch the dif-ferent areas you have decided to include, cutthem out and place them on your originalplan. By modifying the layout and, if neces-sary, the shape of the different zones, you’llfind the ideal site for each element. Forexample, by installing the shed in one of thecorners of the yard, it will take up less space.Design each area as efficiently as possible.For example, a utility area for the clothesline, garbage cans, woodpile, etc., could becovered with gravel or paving stones whichrequire minimal maintenance. The open lawnin the centre of the backyard should be bigenough for all your outdoor activities.

If there isn’t much room left for plants, youcould always integrate them into existing

structures. Hanging plantsand flower boxes will put thefinishing touch of colour toyour landscape design.

Outdoor lighting is a question of balance and playing with the

contrast between light and shadow. Surrounded by a fence, the backyard is designed to make the most of theavailable space and includesa terrace, a play area for thechildren and a shed withclimbing plants.
