Pope Francis said that the grace of the Holy Spirit is for everyone – something we must keep in mind as we continue to walk the path toward Christian unity through prayer and good works.“Share with everyone in the Church Baptism in the Holy Spirit, praise the Lord without ceasing, walk together with Christians of different Churches and Christian communities in prayer and action for the most needy,”

The grace of the Holy Spirit “is for the whole Church, not just for some, and none of us is the ‘master’ and all the others the servants. No. We are all serving this current of grace.” Pope Francis addressed around 50,000 members of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal movement during an ecumenical prayer vigil. The vigil was part of five days of celebrations for the 50th anniversary of the movement. The jubilee was organized by the International Catholic Charismatic Renewal Services and the Catholic Fraternity of Charismatic Covenant Communities and Fellowships. Saturday night’s meeting with Pope Francis, on the eve of Pentecost, was preceded by praise and worship music, readings and testimonies. Papal preacher Fr. Raniero Cantalamessa, O.F.M. also gave a meditation. On stage were leaders of the Charismatic Renewal and representatives of Evangelical, Pentecostal and other Christian churches. During the encounter, the Pope reminded those present that they are in a privileged place for working toward Christian unity, something for which they should never stop striving.

The most precious gift we have all received, he explained, is our Baptism. “And now the Spirit leads us on the path of conversion that goes through the whole Christian world.” Additionally, praising God should be accompanied by serving those in need. “To serve the poorest and the sick, this is what the Church and the Pope are expecting from you, Catholic Charismatic Renewal, but from all of you, everyone, all of you who have entered this current of grace!” Celebrating the 50th anniversary of the movement is the perfect time, he said, to stop and reflect. “And I would say to you: It is time to move forward with more force, leaving behind us the dust of time we have left to accumulate, giving thanks for what we have received and facing the new with faith in the action of the Holy Spirit!”. Today, he said, we are gathered in an open-air space, because we are not afraid and because our hearts are open to the promises of the Father. Together, we all profess that “Jesus is Lord.”

People may have come from many different parts of the world, but in the Holy Spirit, we are united, “to announce together the love of the Father for all his children! To announce the Good News to all peoples! To show that peace is possible.”

Showing to the world that peace is possible isn’t always

so easy, the Pope continued, “but in the name of

Jesus we can prove with our testimony that peace is

SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES SUNDAYS

You should have received a packet in the mail this

weekend week containing Time and Talent cards.

Whatever we are able to accomplish as a faith

community with the help of God’s Grace must involve

each and everyone of us who is grateful that Jesus calls

us to be his disciples.

As with the list below the cards indicate our most

pressing needs. Look them over carefully and

prayerfully so that you and the members of your family

can choose one or two forms of service you can commit

yourself to between now and next Pentecost. This year

we are going to update all our lists. Please return the

cards to the box located in front of the baptismal

font. In the weeks following your turning in the cards,

someone will contact you personally with all the info you

will need to serve.

SMALL DISCIPLESHIP GROUPS

We have had bible and other kinds of study groups at St. Andrews for forty years or more. And on two different occasions—many years apart—we had numerous “Renew Groups” that met in each other’s homes. With some exceptions (in particular with Renew), individual parishioners and couples participated in these groups pretty much just for the time it took to complete a particular course--though some people participated in several groups. Over these many years, countless parishioners have seen their faith grow through these small groups. Even more importantly these groups facilitated the development of community and good friendships. So how do the present Small Discipleship Groups differ from the groups we’ve had in the past? They actually have a lot in common but they do differ somewhat in their purpose. In the first place, they are more than just study groups. And though friendship and community building will undoubtedly occur, these groups exist primarily to form small ongoing communities of intentional and missionary disciples. In the past, the primary purpose of the parish was focused on what might be called “sacramental maintenance” to churchgoers. But as recent popes and bishops have stressed the importance of evangelization, we have had to adopt new strategies that will help us learn how to bring the Good News of God’s love and mercy to the many people who may not feel connected to Christ and the church. One of those strategies is the Alpha Course which has helped hundreds of people to see the best in Christ and in his people, the church. A second strategy is the formation of SDG’s. We have 20 or more groups of various sizes studying discipleship, scripture, and prayer while forming a small community of friends and disciples. Watch the bulletin for new opportunities to become part of a Small Discipleship Group.

BUILDING THE KINGDOM

THROUGH GOOD STEWARDSHIP

Our parish fiscal year begins on July 1st and extends through June 30th. As you can see from the above figures, our gifts for the poor are on the increase. And because we are committed to directing five percent of our collective sacrificial giving to bring good news to the poor, we have been able to give tens of thousands of dollars to various worthy causes over the past ten months. This should act as an incentive for all our members to give generously in an accountable way: sacrificial giving envelopes, automatic bank drafts, and online giving. Thanks to all who are already doing their very best!
