l'm in the minority when it comes to coffee. To me, it's foul-tasting dark-

colored water, but to most Americans it's the best-tasting stuff on earth'

Most Americans depend on their morning cup of joe to start their day: "l'm

just not myself until I have my morning coffee." They can't imagine going a

day without it. Honestly, the same could be said of the Holy Spirit.

Today on pentecost we remember and celebrate the first gift of the Spirit to

the disciples, but it's also a day to say thank you for that incredible ongoing

gift in our daily lives.

Saint Paul writes, "No one can say 'Jesus is Lord' except by the Holy Spirit'"

True-we can't proclaim iesus as Lord without the Spirit, but we also can't

do much of anything without the grace of the Holy Spirit' We can't love,

can't forgive, can't survive hardship, can't heal-without the ongoing

moveme;t of the Spirit. 5o we can say about the Spirit what we say about

our morning java-"l'm just not myself without it."

Saint Paul writes that we are all given to drink of the same Spirit' lt's an

intriguing image-how do you "drink" the Spirit?-but a most approPriate

one as we understand how energizing, motivating, and life-giving the Holy

Spirit is.

Today, let's ask the Spirit to rush into those places in our lives that need to

be revived, those areas of our hearts that are weary and worn. And when

sipping your coffee, imagine drinking in the Holy Spirit-and thank God for

this most amazing gift.Jane I Eske r su ndayb ulleti n @ li g uori. org

de ar PAD Rf,

I recently hnd a spirited discussion with a Protatant friendregarding Romans 8:25. He belieua hb "perfected prayer ofbeing filled with ttrc Holy Spirit and speaking in tongues" is

addressed in that uerse. W?Mt does ttte Church say about this

uerse?

A Oo-ans 8:26 says, "In the same way, the Spirit toocomes to the aid of our weakness; for we do notknow how to pray as we ought, but the Spirit itselfintercedes with inexpressible groanings." I'd be

careful not to interpret this passage too narrowly and

limit its application only to the gift of speaking intongues. In fact, its application is much broader and

can actually be applied to all Christian prayer.

When it comes to praying effectively, all of us can use

some extra help. We get that help from the HolySpirit. Scripture scholar Joseph A. Fitzmayer, SJ,

maintains that the Holy Spirit actually plays an active

and dynamic role in helping Christians prayeffectively by interceding on his or her behalf. Ineffect, the Holy Spirit expresses for us the inaudibleprayers and groaning of our hearts, for which we have

no words.

So, when we pray, the Holy Spirit is actually presentto us and makes up for what we are lacking in ourprayer due to our own human weakness.
