Saint JAMES bar Zebedee• James & John, sons of Zebedee & Salome, were among Jesus original 12 disciples. They & Peter were the three who witnessed Jesus’ Transfiguration (Mark 17:1 & Luke 9:28), as well as Jesus healing Peter's mother-in-law (P 1:29), raising Jarius’ daughter (Luke 8:51) and to be tapped to watch & pray with Jesus in Gethsemane on the eve of his crucifixion (Mark 26:37).•James & John were from a higher social level than the average Galilean fisherman. Their father could afford hired servants (P 1:20), & John (who many presume to be the "beloved disciple") had connections with the high priest (John 18:15). Jesus nicknamed the brothers "sons of thunder" (P 3:17), no doubt because they were both headstrong, hot-tempered & impulsive. •Shortly before Passover in 41 AD (Acts 12), James was beheaded at King Herod Agrippa I’s behest [grandson of Herod the Great (who tried to kill the infant Jesus [Matthew 2]), nephew of Herod Antipas (who ordered John the Baptist’s death [Mark 6] & examined Jesus on Good Friday [Luke 23]) & father of Herod Agrippa II, who heard Paul’s legal defense before Procurator Porcius Festus [Acts 25]). James was the first of the 12 to suffer martyrdom & is the only one of them whose death is recorded in the New Testament.•He is often called James Major/Greater/Elder to distinguish him from others in the New Testament with his name. •Tradition has it that he made a missionary journey to Spain &, after his death his body was taken to Spain for burial. Compostela, his alleged burial site, became a major pilgrimage destination in the Middle Ages; Spaniards fighting to drive the Moors from Spain adopted Santiago de Compostela! as one of their battle cries. His Feast Day is July 25th & he is considered Spain’s patron saint. San Diego & Santiago are both named in his honor.

14In the morning David wrote a letter to Joab, and sent it by the hand of Uriah. 15In the letter he wrote, “Set Uriah in the forefront of the hardest fighting, and then draw back from him, so that he may be struck down and die.”

2It happened, late one afternoon, when David rose from his couch and was walking about on the roof of the king’s house, that he saw from the roof a woman bathing; the woman was very beautiful. 3David sent someone to inquire about the woman. 5 When Jesus looked up and saw a great crowd coming toward him, he said to Philip, “Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?” 6 He asked this only to test him, for he already had in mind what he was going to do. 7 Philip answered him, “It would take more than half a year’s wages to buy enough bread for each one to have a bite!” 8 Another of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, spoke up, 9 “Here is a boy with five small barley loaves & two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?”

10 Jesus said, “Have the people sit.” There was plenty of grass in that place, & they sat down (about 5,000 men were there).11 Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks & distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted. He did the same with the fish. 12 When they all had enough to eat, he said to his disciples, “Gather the pieces left over. Let nothing be wasted.” 13 So they gathered them & filled 12 baskets with the pieces…left over…
