Principal’s Post Dear Parents I am pleased to announce that Mrs Jacki Tucker has been appointed as our new Assistant Principal to start at the beginning of next year. Jacki is currently the Assistant Principal at St Lawrence’s School in Balcatta. She is studying towards a Master of Educational Leadership, she is enrolled at the CEWA Established Leaders Program and is a Kagan Cooperative Learning coach. I’m looking forward to welcoming Jacki to our community next year. Assembly Night A huge highlight for the students and parents is our assembly night, which will be held in the Hall tonight Wednesday 18 September for the students from Pre Primary to Year 3. The idea of the assembly night is for the students to share their learning with you from this term. It is not meant to be a competition between classes and I’m sure you will appreciate the huge amount of work that goes into preparing such events to give our students the opportunity to shine in front of an audience. As always with the little students, we are expecting a bumper crowd. The assembly commences at 6.30pm sharp and all students are required to meet in their classrooms at 6.00pm. Performing Arts Assembly Once again our students have participated beautifully in the Performing Arts Festival and we will be showcasing some of these performances at this week’s assembly. Please do come along on Friday morning to see our talented students in action. End of Term Mass All parents and extended family members are invited to our final Mass next Thursday 26 September at 8.45am in our Church. The Mass will be led by our Pre Primary students and it will focus on the value of gifts and our giftedness. Our whole school Masses have been very reverent and beautiful this year and we love having parents come along to be a part of our faith community. Dates Next Thursday is also the last day of the term for us as we are taking the Friday as our Catholic Day. Every year, all Catholic schools are granted one extra day off in recognition to the commitment we make to our faith on the weekends. We will start back at school next term on Tuesday 15 October. Holiday Works As usual, there will be work happening at the school during the holidays as it allows the jobs to be completed without the students here. These holidays, the poles supporting the verandahs in our main quadrangle in front of the chapel will be replaced as they are rusting at the bases. This is quite a big job which will ensure our verandahs remain stable and safe well into the future. I take this opportunity to wish all students and families a safe and relaxing holiday and I look forward to seeing you again next term. WASTE WISE

Recycling at Mary Mac We have a number of recycling projects going at our school and we encourage our families and community to join us in our efforts to reduce, reuse and recycle and to minimise the amount of waste from going into landfill. Our recycling projects include:

1. Batteries – In partnership with Battery World Malaga 2. Old mobile phones and accessories – In partnership with Mobile Muster 3. Oral hygiene products (empty toothpaste tubes, toothbrushes, dental floss containers and all

their packaging) – through Terracycle 4. Soft plastics – part of Redcycle 5. Aluminium cans – through Auscon (so far we have raised $12.60 for our Cash for Cans) 6. Plastic bread tags – through Terracycle 7. Old pens, textas, whiteboard markers – teracycle. 8. Old printer and ink cartridges – Planet Ark

Our worm farms and compost tumblers are collecting all leftover fruit and vegetable scraps on a daily basis. Even the Canteen saves their food scraps for our worms. ‘Worm Wizz’ For Sale at Assemblies We have been able to collect some amazing ‘Worm Wizz’ which is great for the garden. Please have a look as we will have some bottles available at assemblies so first in best dressed. A gold coin donation will give you a bottle of ‘nature’s nutrients’ that your garden and plants will love. Sustainability Club Last Wednesday we had a number of students and staff take part in our new Sustainability Club. All students and staff are welcome to help out with gardening and other sustainability projects each Wednesday during lunch time. On our first day we weeded some of our garden beds, pulled out some enormous carrots and planted some corriander. Some of the carrots were used by the Canteen in their soup, some were sold at our assembly and the rest were happily eaten by the students during lunch. Woolworths Discovery Garden Promotion If you shop at Woolworths and spend $30 you will receive a seedling kit. We would love any donations for our school vegetable garden beds if you do not require them for you home. Don’t forget to ask your neighbours, family and friends too. Please drop in to 4A. Nude Food Challenge Next term, during the month of October our school will be taking part in a number of Nude Food challenges. Wednesday 16th October is WORLD NUDE FOOD DAY and we would like to reduce or possibly eliminate waste from all recess ad lunch items. Please see some examples below on ways to reduce food wastage and packaging. We conducted an audit on the amount of soft plastic collected in just one day and we collected 816 pieces of waste. We will conduct another audit on Nude Food Day and compare the results. Stay tuned!
