Kyrie Eleison (Lord have mercy) Christe Eleison (Christ have mercy) Kyrie Eleison (Lord have mercy)

Today at our 10 am Mass we celebrate one of the Scrutinies, special prayers to help Kasey Kinealy and Austin Kinealy prepare for baptism. That means we have special readings, at that mass, too. Those special readings are printed below. You can find the readings for 4:30 pm and 7:30 mass on page three of the bulletin, a little farther on.

10:00 a.m. Readings

First Reading Ez 37:12-14 Thus says the Lord GOD: O my people, I will open your graves and have you rise from them, and bring you back to the land of Israel. Then you shall know that I am the LORD, when I open your graves and have you rise from them, O my people! Welcome to Immaculate Heart of Mary! You matter to God, and you matter to us, so, we are glad that you have joined us for wor-ship. may be revered. R With the Lord there is mercy and fullness of redemption. I trust in the LORD; my soul trusts in his word. More than sentinels wait for the dawn, let Israel wait for the LORD. R With the Lord there is mercy and fullness of redemption. For with the LORD is kindness and with him is plenteous redemption; And he will redeem Israel from all their iniquities. R With the Lord there is mercy and fullness of redemption. Second Reading Rom 8:8-11 Brothers and sisters: Those who are in the flesh cannot please God. But you are not in the flesh; on the contrary, you are in the spirit, if only the Spirit of God dwells in you. Whoever does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the spirit is alive because of right-eousness. If the Spirit of the one who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, the one who raised Christ from the dead will give life to your mortal bodies also, through his Spirit dwelling in you.

The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Gospel Acclamation Jn 11:25a, 26 Praise to you lord Jesus Chist, King of endless Glory! I am the resurrection and the life, says the Lord; whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will never die. Praise to you lord Jesus Chist, King of endless Glory! Gospel Jn 11:1-45 The Lord be with you. And with your spirit. A reading from the Holy Gospel according to John. Glory to You, O Lord. We sign our forehead, lips, and heart with a cross.

Now a man was ill, Lazarus from Bethany, the vil-lage of Mary and her sister Martha. Mary was the one who had anointed the Lord with perfumed oil

and dried his feet with her hair; it was her brother Lazarus who was ill. So the sisters sent word to him saying, “Master, the one you love is ill.” when Jesus heard this he said, “This illness is not to end in death, but is for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified through it.” Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. So when he heard that he was ill, he remained for two days in the place where he was. Then after this he said to his disciples, “Let us go back to Judea.” The disciples said to him, “Rabbi, the Jews were just trying to stone you, and you want to go back there?” Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours in a day? If one walks during the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world. But if one walks at night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him.” He said this, and then told them, “Our friend Lazarus is asleep, but I am going to awaken him.” So the disciples said to him, “Master, if he is asleep, he will be saved.” But Jesus was talking about his death, while they thought that he meant ordinary sleep. So then Jesus said to them clearly, “Lazarus has died. And I am glad for you that I was not there, that you may believe. Let us go to him.” So Thomas, called Didymus, said to his fellow disci-ples, “Let us also go to die with him.”

When Jesus arrived, he found that Lazarus had al-ready been in the tomb for four days. Now Betha-ny was near Jerusalem, only about two miles away. And many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them about their brother. When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went to meet him; but Mary sat at home. Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. But even now I know that whatever you ask of God, God will give you.” Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise.” Martha said to him, “I know he will rise, in the resurrec-tion on the last day.” Jesus told her, “I am the res-urrection and the life; whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?” She said to him, “Yes, Lord. I have come to believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, the one who is coming into the world.”

Fifth Sunday of Lent April 3, 2022

When she had said this, she went and called her sister Mary secretly, saying, “The teacher is here and is asking for you.” As soon as she heard this, she rose quickly and went to him. For Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was still where Martha had met him. So when the Jews who were with her in the house comforting her saw Mary get up quickly and go out, they followed her, presum-ing that she was going to the tomb to weep there. When Mary came to where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet and said to him, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.” When Jesus saw her weeping and the Jews who had come with her weeping, he became per-turbed and deeply troubled, and said, “Where have you laid him?” They said to him, “Sir, come and see.” And Jesus wept. So the Jews said, “See how he loved him.” But some of them said, “Could not the one who opened the eyes of the blind man have done something so that this man would not have died?”

So Jesus, perturbed again, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone lay across it. Jesus said, “Take away the stone.” Martha, the dead man’s sister, said to him, “Lord, by now there will be a stench; he has been dead for four days.” Jesus said to her, “Did I not tell you that if you believe you will see the glory of God?” So they took away the stone. And Jesus raised his eyes and said, “Father, I thank you for hearing me. I know that you always hear me; but because of the crowd here I have said this, that they may believe that you sent me.” And when he had said this, He cried out in a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” The dead man came out, tied hand and foot with burial bands, and his face was wrapped in a cloth. So Jesus said to them, “Untie him and let him go.”

Now many of the Jews who had come to Mary and seen what he had done began to believe in him.

The Gospel of the Lord.

Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

The Third Scrutiny

Lord, hear our prayer.

Readings for 4:30 p.m. and 7:30 a.m.

First Reading Is 43:16-20 Thus says the LORD, who opens a way in the sea and a path in the mighty waters, who leads out chariots and horsemen, a powerful army, till they lie prostrate together, never to rise, snuffed out and quenched like a wick. Remember not the events of the past, the things of long ago consider not; see, I am doing something new! Now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? In the desert I make a way, in the wasteland, rivers. Wild beasts honor me, jackals and ostriches, for I put water in the desert and rivers in the wasteland for my cho-sen people to drink, the people whom I formed for myself, that they might announce my praise.

The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Responsorial Psalm Ps 126:1-2, 2-3, 4-5, 6 R. The Lord has done great things for us; we are filled with joy. When the LORD brought back the captives of Zi-on, we were like men dreaming. Then our mouth was filled with laughter, and our tongue with re-joicing. R. The Lord has done great things for us; we are filled with joy. Then they said among the nations, “The LORD has done great things for them.” The LORD has done great things for us; we are glad indeed. R. The Lord has done great things for us; we are filled with joy. Restore our fortunes, O LORD, like the torrents in the southern desert. Those that sow in tears shall reap rejoicing. R. The Lord has done great things for us; we are filled with joy. Although they go forth weeping, carrying the seed to be sown, They shall come back rejoicing, carry-ing their sheaves. R. The Lord has done great things for us; we are filled with joy. Second Reading Phil 3:8-14 Brothers and sisters: I consider everything as a loss because of the supreme good of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have accepted

Page 4: Penitential Rite - eChurch Bulletins

Fifth Sunday of Lent April 3, 2022

the loss of all things and I consider them so much rubbish, that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having any righteousness of my own based on the law but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God, de-pending on faith to know him and the power of his resurrection and the sharing of his sufferings by being conformed to his death, if somehow I may attain the resurrection from the dead.

It is not that I have already taken hold of it or have already attained perfect maturity, but I con-tinue my pursuit in hope that I may possess it, since I have indeed been taken possession of by Christ Jesus. Brothers and sisters, I for my part do not consider myself to have taken possession. Just one thing: forgetting what lies behind but straining forward to what lies ahead, I continue my pursuit toward the goal, the prize of God’s upward calling, in Christ Jesus.

The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Gospel Acclamation Jl 2:12-13 Praise to you Lord Jesus Chist, King of endless Glory! Even now, says the Lord, return to me with your whole heart; for I am gracious and merciful. Praise to you Lord Jesus Chist, King of endless Glory! Gospel Jn 8:1-11 The Lord be with you. And with your spirit. A reading from the Holy Gospel according to John. Glory to You, O Lord. We sign our forehead, lips, and heart with a cross.

Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. But early in the morning he arrived again in the temple area, and all the people started coming to him, and he sat down and taught them. Then the scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery and made her stand in the mid-dle. They said to him,“Teacher, this woman was caught in the very act of committing adultery. Now in the law, Moses commanded us to stone such women. So what do you say?” They said this to test him, so that they could have

some charge to bring against him. Jesus bent down and began to write on the ground with his finger. But when they continued asking him, he straight-ened up and said to them, “Let the one among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.” Again he bent down and wrote on the ground. And in response, they went away one by one, beginning with the elders. So he was left alone with the woman before him. Then Jesus straightened up and said to her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” She re-plied, “No one, sir.” Then Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you. Go, and from now on do not sin any more.”

The Gospel of the Lord.

Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Nicene Creed I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible.

I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages.

God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, (now we bow until the end of this sentence) and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was cruci-fied under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in ac-cordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Fa-ther. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glo-rified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

News from our Pastor I thought you should know-April 3, 2022

The All Things New survey closes Monday night, April 4, 2022 at 11:59 pm! That’s this Monday! Thank you to everyone who filled out a survey online or on paper. If you haven’t completed the All Things New survey, do it before it closes! If you need help taking the survey, please talk to Debbie or I or anyone on staff.

Here’s our All Things New frequently asked questions for this week.

After the survey, what comes next?

The Catholic Leadership Institute will input the data from the paper surveys. At the end of April, our All Things New team of parish leaders will get a workbook containing the survey report and all other infor-mation which the Archdiocese has gathered about our parish. After an orientation meeting, our All Things New team and I will study the information about Immaculate Heart of Mary and answer about 30 questions for the Archbishop, giving our assessment of our parish’s and our neighborhood’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and challenges. Every parish will make a report based on the 30 questions and send it to the Archbishop.

This summer, the Archbishop and his advisors will review all those reports. Using the local analyses from the Key Parish Leaders, they will develop draft models. The models will describe how parishes will oper-ate after All Things New. The Archbishop and his advisors will also make a rough draft of the strategic pastoral plan for parishes. The plan will give their starting ideas regarding what parishes will be where us-ing what models.

At the end of August, the Archbishop seek feedback from the Archdiocesan Pastoral Council and the priests of the Archdiocese on the draft plan, and he and his advisors will revise it. In Fall 2022, listening sessions at every parish will present how the current draft of the plan would affect that parish, and the Archdiocese will ask for comments, suggestions, and critiques of the current draft. Winter/Spring of 2022-2023 will see the Archbishop and his advisors will the listening sessions feedback and revise the plan and models. We could see them come back to parishes and local leaders several times for more in-formation and feedback. On Pentecost, May 28, 2023, Archbishop Rosanzki will publish the final version of the strategic pastoral plan. He anticipates taking three to five years implement the plan.

Where are lay people in this process?

Our parish had over 180 lay people fill out surveys; so also in every parish of the Archdiocese. Key parish leaders will guide the analysis of each parish and each neighborhood’s local situation. The Archdiocesan Pastoral Council has 42 members; 22 are lay people. Many of the Archbishop’s key advisors are lay peo-ple: the Chancellor, the Director of Evangelization and Discipleship, the Chief Financial Officer, and the staff of Catholic Leadership Institute. The listening sessions are for lay people, and the Key Parish Lead-ers are lay people. Finally, if you have good ideas or see problems, please tell me! The Holy Spirit speaks to everyone.

During the time of the Soviet Union, some Russian dissidents vowed never to lie. For example, when Ludmilla Petrushevskaya started to write in the 1960’s, “Truth was in general forbidden.” In contrast to the officially approved writers, and though it meant she generally did not get published, Ludmilla vowed “never, never, never to lie”. Living in a society where the powerful used lies to hold onto their power and where propaganda and official lying was pervasive, her stand for truth was a stand for freedom. I think her example of honesty can help us, too, because honesty aids free-dom, especially honesty with ourselves and honesty with God.

Today Jesus told us the beautiful story we call “the Prodigal Son”. In that story, when did the son head back to free-dom? It was when he honestly confronts the reality of his situation: “How many of my father’s hired workers have more than enough food to eat, but here I am, dying of hunger.” He had been trying to live life on his own terms. When he admitted how badly he’s failed in that project, he could also acknowledge that even the lowliest life in his father’s house would be better than the life he was then living. Marvelously, because this story is a story about the God and his love, the whole truth is even better than the son’s first glimpse of it. He doesn’t come home just to a begrudging ac-ceptance and a living wage, but to a father who embraces him, gives him a ring, and throws a huge party for his return. When the younger son admitted the truth and took his first step to freedom, he did not know how good life could get. But honesty gave him freedom to go and find out.

By contrast, self-deception and slavery are often connected. Think of people who get themselves chained by debt be-cause they aren’t paying attention to how much they are spending and if the things they are buying are worth it. I re-member a man who set himself up to fail people he cared about because he planned to become a rock star and he saw rock stars live a crazy life, and so he decided to start that early. I remember a woman trapped in a bad relationship for all of college because however poorly her boyfriend treated her, however much he neglected her and however often he showed her he as only interested in what she could do for him, she kept telling herself that he really did love her and one day he would grow up. Addictions, too, wrap themselves in self-deception. First we deceive ourselves about wheth-er there is a problem, and then about how bad the problem is, and then about what step are going to be enough to make a difference. We can spend years going around in a circle of disaster and half-resolution and disaster and half-resolution.

It’s easier to see self-deception in the lives of others than in our own lives. So the first place to be honest is to be hon-est with God. Honesty with God means listening to what he tells us, though the Church, through the bible, through prayer, through others, and through our conscience. Honesty with God is our willingness to talk with the Lord about truths we find inconvenient, problems we don’t know how to solve, parts of our life where we pretend nothing is wrong, memories we would rather not face, and actions we’d like to forget.

None of that sounds pleasant, and honesty does challenge us, but honesty with God builds on two pieces of good news. First, Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.” At the bottom of things, the truth is a person, Jesus, the Son of God, who loves us. So we don’t have to fear the truth. Second, Jesus said, “If you remain in my word, you will truly be my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” As human beings, we have many limits, some from our nature, and others we have put on ourselves. By inviting us to listen to receive his word and to follow him, Jesus offers us a truth and a freedom, a wisdom and a power that is divine. Because he loves our freedom, he desires to increase it. Because he loves our human freedom, he makes it powerful for setting others free. Because he loves our human freedom, our choice to talk openly with him is important. Remember the story of the prodigal son, and how the hardship of being honest let to the joy of discovering how much he was loved.

So what’s a practical way you or I could be honest with God? Where could we find a safe place to talk with God about the parts of our life where we pretend nothing is wrong? Where could we find a safe time to identify the self-deceptions that mar our freedom? I’ve often found that time and place here with the Blessed Sacrament and in the sacrament of Confession. This week, like every week, we’ll have prayer with Jesus and confession from 6 pm to 8 pm on Thursday. As an extra bonus for Lent, I’ll be hearing confessions before and after every mass next weekend. I invite you to be honest with God this week, because honesty aids freedom.
