Presidents Message: Finding Your Inner Muse

Last week the downpours and the grey skies finally had their say: I usual-

ly feel on top of my game with my art and energy. But I finally had had it.

My inner muse was gone and my attitude and art suffered. I had no ener-

gy left to find my way back. I stayed home for two days knowing that

somehow I would have to slay this dragon. It was not just the weather but

also knowing I had to expend energy on other work that had to be accom-

plished, that I didn’t want to do, and it wasn’t getting done.

I had talked to other artists lately and it seemed like a common theme: working hard, no inspira-

tion, energy gone and stuck.

We all have days (weeks, months,) when we lack the energy and inspiration needed to do our most

joyous process; art. The Greeks back in the 7th century recognized the need for inspiration and the

mythology of the nine muses was born. Greek mythology created the nine daughters of Zeus and

Mnemosyne, who were the personification of knowledge and the arts, including literature, dance and

music. Their sole function was to inspire. The modern interpretation of the muse is “The compli-

ment to a real woman who inspires creative endeavor. “ (Wikpedia.)

So we all need someone or something to kick start our inspiration. For each person it is different

and special. One thing that inspires me is meeting with other artists and seeing regularly how they

do their art and taking the time to share ideas and skills that each of us has learned. Another source

of inspiration is nature. I find that there is no substitute for being outside and just watching the sky,

the earth, animals and birds. Another source of creativity is trying out a new medium or trying dif-

ferent techniques in a workshop with other artists.

Being an artist is often a singular experience: we spend long hours in our workshops and studios

creating. Sometimes the home or studio itself is a problem: lack of lighting, no space to work or hav-

ing to take care of family or other situations first. We all prioritize our time and sometimes we opt

out of doing art. We take on other roles or become enmeshed in the business side of doing our art.

So what is it going to take to get your art back on track? Where do you want to be with your art at

the end of this year? How can you find inspiration?

I finally took the day “off” and went up snowshoeing with my husband and friends. I shut off all the

“I shoulds” and escaped. The sky was blue and the temperature 36 degrees. We bundled up and

started snowshoeing on a trail near Paradise at Mt. Rainier. We walked several miles in cement like

snow. The only people we met out on the trail were a couple of volunteer rangers. The only sounds

were soft” thunks“of wet ice and snow falling off of trees as they hit the snowy ground. Guess what?

My inner muse is back. She was there just waiting.

If your inner muse has left, it is only temporary: it’s your chance for an adventure! Its an opportuni-

ty to find your inner muse.

Peninsula Art League

presents a

Watermedia Workshop

with David Lobenberg

August 10, 11, 12, 2012

“David has a unique capability of breaking down the step-by-step process of painting and guiding me each part of the way with humor and encouragement.” Workshop participant About David’s workshops ~

David Lobenberg uses a step-by-step teaching method in his workshops, whether he’s demonstrating water-color, acrylic or drawing. After each step he encourages students to ask questions, then they go back to their boards or easels and execute that step. No one is ever left scratching their head or wondering what it’s all about. In our August workshop, David will use this teaching method for two watercolor projects: one land-scape and one portrait. He will begin by practicing preliminary black and white value studies using a pencil, a Sharpie ultra-fine tip pen, a Tombow double-ended art pen and a Niji waterbrush. During this exercise, he’ll incorporate what he calls ‘the six universal skill sets of drawing,’ a cumulative process that teaches and im-proves upon your drawing skills. The class then moves on to finished watercolor paintings using regular round watercolor brushes and a full color palette.

Workshop schedule ~

Friday & Saturday: discuss, demonstrate and practice the six universal skill sets of drawing • Practice the Tom-bow/Waterbrush ketching technique working from photo reference handouts including still life, landscape and portraiture • Students can do ‘eyeball’ drawings from the photos of from provided contour drawings that can be traced, allowing more focus on the sketching technique • Conclude the day with painting studies of landscape and portraiture using Payne’s Gray and regular watercolor brushes. Saturday & Sunday: Painting the full color, full sheet landscape and simple portrait.

Application for PAL Workshop with David Lobenberg August 10, 11, & 12, 2012

Shades of Red and Blue

From the Workshop:

Anne Knapp:

I used my scholarship money to help pay for attending the International Association of Pastel Association's

(IAPS) biennial convention in Albuquerque, NM last June. I will recount several separate learning opportuni-

ties. I want to briefly speak about the advantages of attending conventions tailored to your chosen medium,

and some of my favorite parts. I will share a great way to utilize models (and how to find them), as well as an

important new rule about artwork related to seminars and workshops entered into juried shows (be there or be

square!!). I also was able to take two separate one day figurative workshops- one with Doug Dawson and one

with Margaret Dyer. I will show some slides illustrating the amazing models and bring a sample of work from

each workshop. I will have to speak fast to cover it all! Thank you again to PAL for helping me take ad-

vantage of this great opportunity to expand my craft.

Compliments of Judy Buskirk

Please stop by the Kimball gallery and check out the new videos. There are 10 wonderful watercolor videos by Susie

Short. You will remember her from our PAL presentation on Christmas cards...wonderful artist ...fun, lively and in-

structive. There is also a new DVD series on "drawing made easy" specifically portrait mastery. This is a four cd series by Chris Elmore, a talented artist from Aus-

trailia. She gets down to the nitty gritty of how tos: how to draw a nose, how to draw a mouth, how to catch the gleam in the eye. The last new video is by Kay Barnes, an-

other Puget Sound watercolorist of talent. Her instruction is a lot about colors and how to select the right color for a

wash. You have a one month check out period from the day you check out the video. So take advantage of this wonderful opportunity PAL offers and while you are at the

Kimball Gallery check out the art on the walls!
